qwerpy··on The SpaceX Sham
@cdrnsf is posting negative articles all you do? isn't it exhausting to bathe in negativity all day long?
qwerpy··on Amazon backs power plant that may become top source of US climate pollution
That’s an interesting hypothetical. In the same vein of “assume the cow is spherical”, I also have a degenerate example! Suppose the Vatican City has horrific per capita emissions. Maybe the pope has a gastrointestinal disorder involving frequent methane emissions. The pope is otherwise healthy and will remain in office for decades. China and India point at them “but per capita emissions!” and refuse to do anything.
qwerpy··on Amazon backs power plant that may become top source of US climate pollution
Apparently I need help understanding why this matters more than simply prioritizing countries who emit the most. Do you want to reduce total emissions or do you want reduce it equitably across countries? The greenhouse effect doesn’t care how equitable the reductions are.
qwerpy··on Influencers face backlash over Meta 'pervert glasses' content
This isn’t specific to Tesla, both Rivian and Waymo have similar numbers of cameras. This seems essential for self-driving. Thankfully people find it socially acceptable outside of the tech bubble. I’d prefer to have self-driving rather than less cameras roving the roads.
qwerpy··on Microsoft Edge is about to lock out older ad blockers, just like Chrome did
Brave still maintains MV2 support (for now) so you get to use full-fat uBlock Origin. Eventually, I imagine they'll tire of it, say "well just use the built-in one", and get rid of MV2 when it gets too obnoxious to maintain.

I go through a 5 minute ritual every time I reimage/build a PC of installing Brave and disabling all the garbage on it. It's worth it to get Chromium compatibility and speed with uBlock Origin.

qwerpy··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
When people here complain about HN becoming Reddit, they get that snide HN guideline thrown at them. I mostly refuse to abide, and continue to call out and downvote/flag Reddit-tier comments. Fighting the redditization of HN is what will save this place.
qwerpy··on Zohran Mamdani's NYC Tech Team Is What DOGE Should Have Been
I agree with you about this. If you go against the prevailing politics here, you'll get "source?"-d and nitpicked to death by an army of fact checkers while they can state opinions as facts with impunity. If your facts are unassailable you simply get downvoted and ignored.

The best thing to do is to flag political posts and comments to bury them. Happily, this appears to have happened here.

qwerpy··on Meta Ran Ads That Contained AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Imagery
Meta is better than anyone at anti-ad-blocking. Even the best ad blockers struggle to keep ahead of the ever-changing structure served up by their websites, and the websites are intentionally bad to make you use the apps instead. But the apps are nearly immune to ad-blocking.

“Just stop using meta properties then”. Sure but some of us have wives, friends, etc

qwerpy··on Cookware Got Worse on Purpose: Who Owns Pyrex and All-Clad Now
Not sure if you have a wife or not, but "just get cast iron" is something I would have said when I was single. Now, it's buy a new nonstick pan every year.
qwerpy··on Kids who own phones have poorer reading comprehension scores VS those who don't
I appreciated your comment and especially liked the way you characterized the original commenter. Everyone going for low effort points here is cheapening the discussion, like that R website we hate being compared to.
qwerpy··on What is happening to jobs? Separating AI hype from reality
Yeah but I’m not driving an Elon. I’m driving a Tesla.
qwerpy··on What is happening to jobs? Separating AI hype from reality
Good points about the stats. I know the answers to some of those questions, but at some point it's so hard to get apples to apples comparisons for these things. So I did a "paranoid super-supervised" usage of FSD for a year or two to learn its failure modes and get used to its reliability or lack thereof. Then combined with the (allegedly truthful) FSD stats, I came to my own conclusion which is that FSD is ready for my everyday needs. (nit: FSD can change version to version and potentially regress. some temporary paranoia is justified after major changes)

Usable public transport would be nice. It was unusable for various reasons where I used to live (Seattle/Bellevue) and is pretty much non-existent where I currently live (Socal / Orange County), but everything else about the location is perfect for me, so I'm willing to give that up.

> they are in some important senses already ahead. Less optimised for the headline, more optimised for the real dream.

Nice! I look forward to trying them out when they are available and working here. Rivian claims they'll achieve it next year, and one of their form factors (R1S) is perfect for my family so they'll be my next option if things go downhill with my Teslas.

qwerpy··on What is happening to jobs? Separating AI hype from reality
Yes, I'll continue stupidly looking at data and putting the safety of my family in the hands of the safer option. If only I could be smart enough to use emotion-based politics to make those decisions instead.
qwerpy··on What is happening to jobs? Separating AI hype from reality
The data shows that FSD (supervised) is safer than human alone driving. Given that I value the well-being of my family, FSD (supervised) it is as often as possible. Separately from the data, it is just so nice to hit a button and sit back and relax for the entirety of the drive.

The usual HN nits at this point are that the data is unreliable/biased and that the way I’m using it isn’t supervised enough. I’ll admit to the latter. In my experience the mistakes tend to be navigational but I’ve seen a few of the “nearly drove through the lane closed gate” videos so I definitely keep a closer watch when there is complicated highway stuff going on. I also have my foot at the ready for when I go through the gate to my community, similar failure mode and about 1% of the time it forgets to wait for the gate to close and reopen.

I look forward to the other car companies catching up, competition and more options are good. Elon is a loose cannon, so I need alternatives if Tesla ceases to be.

qwerpy··on What is happening to jobs? Separating AI hype from reality
The fact of the matter is that it drives reliably end to end. I don't care who's responsible or what it's called. I only care about the benefit it provides my family, which is immense. If it gets into a crash I know I'm responsible, but given that I consider it a better driver than I am now, this is an improvement over before.
qwerpy··on What is happening to jobs? Separating AI hype from reality
What matters is the benefit it affords to drivers, not what "biggest proponents" say. Elon got overly excited in 2016, but for my day to day usage, I don't need it to self-charge on a drive across the country to get me. I need it to safely drive my family on my daily errands or weekend trips, which I now consider solved.

I'm mentally prepared for the next US administration to exact retribution on his companies, and I expect FSD will be neutered after that. Hopefully other car companies are able to catch up. I'm more of a self-driving fan than a Tesla fan, so as long as the thing works as well as what I have now, I'll be fine with it.

qwerpy··on What is happening to jobs? Separating AI hype from reality
I’m probably illustrating your point but as a FSD fan it really got ”good enough” recently with version 14. The tipping point was suddenly, much more often than not, it can drive end to end from start (my garage) to finish (parked at destination) with no interventions. I can text and watch videos on my phone and as long as I glance up once a minute, it doesn’t complain.

Handling highway driving with lane changes was great when it got there years ago, but just in the last year or so it has gone from a nice to have to “from now on I will never buy a car that can’t do this”.

AI has hit some milestones for replacing work as well. There’s still many more to go and maybe some of them will never get hit (much like I don’t think a coast to coast drive with zero interventions during winter conditions is ever going to happen) but there are points at which it forever meaningfully changes some field of work. I think it’s there for writing code.

I’m glad that of all places, HN is still able to grudgingly put aside red/blue team sports to appreciate really cool science and engineering.
qwerpy··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
The bots (and humans) I’m trying to weed out are the pot-stirring permanently outraged/bitter commenters. For example on a “car overturned on X road” post, people getting into fights about whether BMW or Subaru or Tesla drivers are worse. That’s all noise. I want to know when it happened, which direction of traffic, if it’s cleared up yet, etc. LLM works well to remove the off-topic garbage. If someone is botting the actual content (recommendations, reviews, etc) and the up/downvoters are unable to identify it as a bot, I probably won’t be able to either. So I’m not worse off using the LLM.

Worst case I get some pre-digested garbage and I waste less time, best case the LLM pulled out a few good nuggets of info. It’s not a perfect system yet. There’s a lot to tune with how deep to go, what constitutes garbage vs signal, and so on. At least it’s fun :)

qwerpy··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
I agree with them. In many of the subs I used to frequent, the outrage is high and the signal is low. LLM really is the best way to consume the content there. Retrieve the new posts of the day/week, filter out the outrage and politics and low-effort Reddit in-jokes/copypasta, then summarize the various comment threads. My time is too valuable to sift through the utterly mind-numbing nonsense to get the occasional new piece of info. If you want to dig deeper, ask the LLM to dig in. Or have it regurgitate verbatim a pre-filtered selection of comments.

Reddit is a good source of new happenings and discussions, but I’m willing to spend some tech company’s compute to clean it up for me. For example, I often want to branch out from a particular musical artist. Reddit has many good recommendations. LLM is perfectly capable of gathering these.

qwerpy··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
Not even the city-sized ones. My local ones (Seattle when I lived there, and Orange County ones now) are political cesspools full of intolerant people and outrage bait.

I have to say you have an entertaining comment style, chip or no.
qwerpy··on How an AI Anime Is Created
Thanks for the reply and the example. When I used to watch anime I always sped through it wanting to get to the story/action. I had assumed people combing through frame by frame were just looking for excuses to label it as AI. But now I can appreciate doing it for a lovingly-crafted anime to savor the details, and being disappointed when the they're not there or hallucinated/inconsistent due to AI. It's the same reason I avoid any music that is AI-generated, despite being fooled at a cursory listen. I don't want to waste my time if I dive in deeper and find out there's nothing there.

My in-laws from China are visiting and now they're both watching these AI-generated micro-dramas. Lots of weird shiny people with perfect faces and bodies, and overly dramatic yelling/crying. Much worse quality than the anime clips featured in this post. They know it's AI and don't care. I'm afraid that if the majority of people reward slop, that's what everyone's going to get.

qwerpy··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
I tried this for a while. My local subs have been taken over by ideologues and the niche subs still get political/outrage bait flare-ups regularly. I've decided that the best way to consume reddit is through an intermediary, whether it's Google or an LLM that I ask to crawl through subs for recent posts, remove emotional/political content, and summarize for me. Ironically that's exactly what Reddit is trying to prevent, but when push comes to shove I'm happy to miss out on the 5% of useful stuff rather than have to wade through the memes, outrage, and bots.
qwerpy··on How an AI Anime Is Created
I watched the whole thing and didn’t notice anything off, other than soup moving a bit weirdly. But if no one had told me it was AI, then I’d think that’s just the animation style. Then I read the list of tells and oh ok, now I can see a little of it if I pause at just the right time and replay it a few times. But who watches anime like that? I think it’s good enough for the vast majority of people, who would enjoy it at first, then later find out it’s AI, and hate it because that’s the cool thing to do.
qwerpy··on Advertise in ChatGPT
Every layer in the org chart gradually got replaced by people who single-mindedly optimized for their own careers. How do you optimize your career at data-driven, results-oriented, “measurable performance goals” big tech? You make revenue go up in a 3-6 month time horizon.

It kinda sounds like you’re the one with the chip on the shoulder.

qwerpy··on $100 AI Music Video: Claude Fable 5 vs. GPT-5.6 Sol
For fun, I took that image and put it into a few models and asked it "what is wrong with this genAI image?"

Grok fast came up with a lot of minor quibbles and missed the issue.

Grok expert touched on it with a "Limbs/anatomy ambiguity / This creates a slight "how many legs does this cat actually have?" moment." but then moved on to complain about texturing . Later it summarized the issue as "classic "animal + held object" anatomy problem".

Chatgpt 5.6 instant didn't notice it

Chatgpt 5.6 medium didn't notice it and mainly complained about the background being blurry

Chatgpt 5.6 high (46s) "The biggest error is the cat appears to have six paws"

Google AI mode complained about whiskers and feet placement

Only chatgpt high and marginally grok expert had acceptable answers.
