qwerpy··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
Yeah I’d love a cybervan or model XL. Pretty much every family I know would get one. In lieu of that we all got model Ys / cybertrucks instead, and then we grumble about it when the in-laws come to visit and we need to drive two cars to take the family out. YL is fine but they needed to go further. Need 3 proper rows and storage space!
qwerpy··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
4x RTX 6000 running at full load with relatively cheap electricity ($0.25/kWh) is around $450/month.

I did the math and decided it’d better to pay for tokens than to buy the hardware and generate them myself.

qwerpy··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
Yeah it’s awesome! Can’t think of a better, safer vehicle for an active family. Charges for free from my roof solar. Carries all the large toys. Best of all it drives itself anywhere I need to go, it’s like I have my own driver.
qwerpy··on Does Reddit have an astroturfing problem? What the data suggests
Same. I got banned from mine for basically having the opinion of the median inhabitant of my city (read: politically moderate, appreciates the police, etc) which wasn’t to the liking of the mods. I gave up on that site after that. Whatever LLM I happen to be using can wade through the sewage and fish out the occasional useful info for me.
qwerpy··on I switched to Brave
I wouldn’t find “let’s not talk about politics” eye-rolling and neither would my social circle (first generation Asian families). In fact if someone kept bringing up politics in an overly emotional or pushy way, they probably wouldn’t be invited back.
qwerpy··on Windows 11½
Some other ones to add on from my fresh install: Start menu search will search the Microsoft Store for apps they want you to install, some key combinations will launch copilot and if it's not setup it will take you to a webpage that will help you set it up, every office application has a cheap looking unhideable jeweled title bar button to "Upgrade your plan".

Solutions in order of the problems listed: https://superuser.com/questions/1927207/how-to-remove-the-st..., https://github.com/midrare/hyperenable, and my favorite: downgrade to a previous version of office which is almost certainly unsafe and has active exploits (16.0.19929.20106). But I hate that button THAT much and my wife refuses to move off of Onenote for our family knowledge management. I am close to just using Onenote in a browser (where I can zap the offending element) but the loading pages on demand is annoying.

qwerpy··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
If this were any other space company it’d be on the front page with glowing praise. But it’s Elon’s company and the launch was a success, so it’s buried down on the fourth page or so currently. I expect this out of general population social media but it’s sad to see hacker news become like this.

Instead, we have such important news like "Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain" and "MongoDB CEO resigns to join Meta" and a fridge magnet to greet us on the front page.

qwerpy··on SpaceX's Starship launching to orbit for first time ever today
Yeah seriously. Saw a Rivian parked with all kinds of anti-Elon accessories: custom license plate, anti-Elon bumper sticker AND a anti-cybertruck sticker. Was fun to park my cybertruck next to it and take some joke photos but in retrospect I should probably keep my distance from unhinged people like that.
qwerpy··on Best LLM for every budget, updated daily
Wouldn't be so sure, at least not for a GPU-based system. Quick math for a 5090 running at around 500W generating 100 tokens per second (reasonable for Qwen 3.8-27B) is around 2-3 kWh for a million tokens, which is around $0.60 for some mix of off/on peak electricity rates.

This is in the same ballpark for that same model on openrouter (https://openrouter.ai/qwen/qwen3.8-27b), highly dependent on input/output mix. Deepseek is a much more capable model that you can't run locally on normal hardware, and their rates are insanely cheap ($0.04 / $1 per 1M).

And so far I haven't considered the cost of the hardware. I happen to have a gaming PC that can be put to use on inference when not gaming, but given these numbers I don't think I would buy new hardware to do inference at home. Unless my math is wrong, it seems you're way better off paying for Deepseek than running Qwen or some other locally runnable model yourself. Of course if you have specific privacy requirements or prefer something unique about a particular model you can run locally, the equation changes.

qwerpy··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
I was poking fun at evolarjun and epihelix for "hallucinating" that this was just a marketing whitepaper (they did publish a pre-print) and that the preprint was "so embarrassing" (you said that the authors are actually experts). It kind of seemed like they had some opinion about AI and this paper, and wishfully concluded things that were not true to support their opinion.
qwerpy··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
This comment chain is depressing. People who hallucinated things they really wanted to be true. Guess it’s not a uniquely AI problem.
qwerpy··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
Lol Grok users catching strays here. I enjoy it and it has built some nice things for me as a hobbyist. The attitude of the company is more just quietly build cool things rather than Anthropic's holier-than-thou condescending attitude coupled with the over the top self-serving doomerism.
qwerpy··on Grok bot is now in Tesla
Nice, it was a bit strange setting up the connectors in grok chat on the computer and not having them available in grok car for unknown reasons. I set up a gmail connector and a custom connector to my Home Assistant, so I could do things like "figure out how many amps to charge the car at so that the home battery will be at 50% at 4 PM" and it would look at my home power system metrics and calendar to see how many hours I'd be charging at home. Or "open the garage door" and "turn off all the lights and air conditioners". Now I can do those directly from the car without having to fish out my phone.
qwerpy··on I said no and Apple said yes
My favorite one on iPhone is the Apple Health app. Marginally useful to track some trends, so I was using it occasionally. Every 2 weeks it will nag you to "Make sure the Health features on your iPhone and Apple Watch are set up the way you want them" with a banner that takes up 1/3 of the screen. There's not even a "maybe later". No matter what you do, it comes back every 2 weeks. Sure, I can "just" close it. After 5 years, I've closed this stupid nag close to 150 times.
qwerpy··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
My unpleasant introduction to Apple Maps ads recently was opening it to look for nearby restaurants, and seeing an ad for a domestic violence lawyer nearby. Apple has now lost all credibility when it comes to respecting the user, not that they had much left at this point.
qwerpy··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
I’ve managed to move all of my inner circle family and friends to Signal. We always had one holdout android user and now we don’t care that he’s on android. As a bonus, because I’m on a computer much of the day, I can use a keyboard to send signal messages.

There’s one non-tech sister in law who won’t install signal (but is somehow ok with Snapchat) so she’s just not included on the group chats.

qwerpy··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
At least with this website, ad blockers will hide most/all of the ads. The ads built into iOS cannot be blocked or even dismissed. The future is going to be apps- and OS-level ads.
qwerpy··on Grok 4.7
Shush, adults are talking.
qwerpy··on Grok 4.7
Nice. Thanks for the feedback. I'm currently having it churn out a refactor so I can use it for other games, but afterwards I will tell it to use base key shapes and clone them for the keys. If I were writing this by hand I may have made the same mistake, not knowing that SVG actually has clone capabilities like that. The script does have the key geometry defined in a single place, and generates the SVG wastefully.
qwerpy··on Grok 4.7
I've been using 4.6 for some one-off game mods/utilities and it has done very well. "I have a very niche keyboard (Moonlander) and I play this very niche space sim, make me a SVG keyboard cheatsheet for it". Told me to grab keymap.c for the keyboard and inputmap.xml for the game's key bindings, churned for a while, then spit out a pretty good first attempt, along with the python script used to generate it. Spent another hour of back and forth to refine the script, and now it generates great diagrams that will adapt as my keyboard firmware and game bindings evolve: https://files.catbox.moe/x0u76x.svg

Excited to try 4.7. I hope they fixed the "it's not X, it's Y" that showed up in 4.6.

qwerpy··on The senior engineer death spiral
Apparently no one liked this, but I did. Harmless humor joking about a letter salad of a username.
qwerpy··on Resident Evil 4 (GameCube) – complete byte-identical decompilation to C/C++
Are the comments wrong or just not concise?

I looked at https://github.com/adonis-singh/re4/blob/master/src/wep/objM...

Can't really decipher what line 21 is saying so I concede there could be some slop in there. But the comments on lines 27-30 seem to be informative and give some context that the code doesn't have.

Granted, I'm not an expert on RE4's source code, but the comments look helpful enough.

qwerpy··on Resident Evil 4 (GameCube) – complete byte-identical decompilation to C/C++
I browsed through a few random files in that repo. There are high-quality code comments everywhere I looked. AI is the perfect tool to do this sort of thing. Can you imagine a human sitting down and documenting a million lines of decompiled code from a dev team 20 years ago?

Boggles my mind that there is hate for AI in retro-gaming. It's all about making existing things work. If it works and plays well, who cares if Claude did it in an afternoon or some human who spent a year of his life. In fact, I'd rather have Claude do it. Humans will get bored, get involved in community drama, disappear, etc. Unfortunate for the humans who are seeing their life's contribution to the scene made obsolete by a few kilowatt-hours in a datacenter, but good for the rest of us.

qwerpy··on Y Combinator's PAC is throwing money at Republicans across the country
That would be terrible! However I don’t see evidence of that in the article.
qwerpy··on Y Combinator's PAC is throwing money at Republicans across the country
Didn’t say it was. But the headline is implying throwing money at this particular side is noteworthy. However, money is going to both sides. Why isn’t the headline “throwing money at various political candidates”?
qwerpy··on Y Combinator's PAC is throwing money at Republicans across the country
Are we supposed to be up in arms about this?

> 66 different federal political action campaigns (PACs), nearly half of which are supporting Republicans.

Seems balanced to me.

qwerpy··on Show HN: Microsoft Office running with Wine on Linux with no virtualization
Disagree, if it provides value to me I don’t care who or what built it. This provides value to me. I’m stuck on windows and eventually want to get out, and MS Office (specifically OneNote) is one of the remaining hurdles. This gives me hope that it’s only a matter of time. For the anti-AI people they can wait for someone can do a "proper", artisanal human-written version that builds on the problems that were solved by the AI-written version here.
qwerpy··on US Treasuries Have Become Unappetizing for Foreign Central Banks and Governments
On the bright side, if enough people agree with this, I could finally buy a house in my neighborhood for <$3M. Prices remain stubbornly high and no amount of "America sucks" on HN and reddit are convincing these (mostly foreign, wealthy) people to sell their houses :(
qwerpy··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
I find the "normal" forms of gambling very boring: going to a casino, sports betting, lottery tickets, prediction markets, etc. I just assume I'll lose money because that's what tends to happen, so I have no interest in playing. As a result I thought I was a higher life-form, immune to gambling.

Then I played some mobile JRPGs that had gacha (gambling) elements. New fancy unit (big damage numbers or skimpy clothing or both) comes out every week and you get them by spending scarce resources on slot machine-like animations. Somehow I fell for this, despite knowing all about how gachas work, spending hundreds of dollars over the course of a few years. Now I realize I'm not a superior life-form. I just needed to be gifted a few wins of something that mattered to me, and then I'm throwing away money on pull after pull just like a casino gambling addict.

qwerpy··on ER visits for gambling disorders doubled after expanded online gambling market
Dang. You're young and healthy enough to do intense snowboarding, and then a few years later suffer a heart attack? Glad you're doing better now, and thanks for the reminder to try to take care of my health.
