quintussss··on A Lisp Interpreter for Shell Scripting
An experimental Lisp interpreter written in C++ with a focus on shell scripting. It lets you combine the expressive power of Lisp with the practicality of the Unix shell: you can run commands, capture output, pipe between processes, and still use Lisp syntax for logic and structure. Think of it as writing your shell scripts in Lisp instead of Bash.
quintussss··on M4 always was horrible, and I say that as the original author of GNU M4
I worked at a company that heavily used M4 for generating header files and I hated it. The syntax is just awful.
quintussss··on Show HN: Curl2Url
What does this do? It should really be explained on the site.
quintussss··on Interview with Andreas Kling of Serenity OS (2022)
But isn't this just about compiling the system? Not really 'building', ie programming a operating system.
quintussss··on Collection of "Today I Learned" notes
Wow, didn't expect there to be so many notes.
quintussss··on Localization Failure: Temperature Is Hard
One thing that really annoys me is youtube translating video titles - why would I ever want the title of an english language video to be translated?
quintussss··on Edge sends images you view online to Microsoft
This reminds me of that one talk at a german hacker conference (CCC) about xerox printers inserting false numbers into scans
quintussss··on An Excel error led Austria's SPÖ to announce the wrong candidate as the winner
No this is not true. There was an election among party members, that was with around 147000 people. This election apparently worked. It was the subsequent election among the party functionaries (601 people) that failed due to someone not being able to do 4th grade math.
quintussss··on Show HN: Unknown Pleasures, a tiny web experiment with WebGL
Very cool, great work.
quintussss··on Catch-23: The New C Standard Sets the World on Fire
I always wonder how much these new C standards use, as C is now mostly used in areas where one is severely limited when it comes to compiler choice. Where I work, we use GCC 6.2 and iso9899:1990 (C90). If we were able to use a modern compiler, we would probably just use C++.
quintussss··on Flying Planes with Python and JavaScript
Looks very interesting, the autopilot code looks especially interesting to me.
quintussss··on Xerox copier flaw changes numbers in scanned docs (2013)
there is a great talk about this from the guy that found it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FeqF1-Z1g0

it's in german though...

quintussss··on Simple Physics-based Flight Simulation with C++
You are right, the ailerons are really in front of the wings, which if of course wrong. I will update this and add some info on the coordinate system!
quintussss··on Simple Physics-based Flight Simulation with C++
How to create simple but realistic looking flight simulation from scratch with C++.
quintussss··on Show HN: A version control system based on rsync
Would be nice if you could talk about the problems you had with git and how jamsync solves them.
quintussss··on How to track and analyze your location data safely and privacy conscious
Well, you are going to have a hard time being more in control, unless you invest a significant amount of time and effort to write the app yourself.
quintussss··on Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta is now available to anyone in North America
The only time?
quintussss··on Criticizing Computers
Looks like it's been hugged to death...
quintussss··on Use RSS for privacy and efficiency (2021)
I don't get why anybody would want a json feed. RSS/Atom are already simple to the point of being trivial, so why introduce more standards?
quintussss··on Which programming paradigm had the most impact on you as an engineer and why?
State machines, I love how you can describe a problem with a nice diagram. They are used extensively where I work (embedded software).
quintussss··on Write better error messages
Isn't this just survivor bias though? You only hear from those that fail to read and act on the error message.
quintussss··on How I Create Cool Wallpapers with Math
I noticed there have recently been a lot of articles about raytracing, has anybody else noticed this?
quintussss··on TIL: You can access a user’s camera with just HTML
This mindset is exactly why we all have to suffer with slugish electron apps and bloated websites instead of using fast, native apps written in something like Qt.
quintussss··on Static site hosting hurdles
I use a static site generator, a vps and a git post-receive hook to build and deploy my site. Does not require any third-party providers (apart from the vps) and takes about 15 minutes to setup.
quintussss··on Ask HN: What are the best-designed personal blogs you’ve come across?
https://www.jakobmaier.at/
quintussss··on Happiness Is Two Scales
I love how the two top comments on this post are "It's more complicated" and "It's much simpler".
quintussss··on The impact of removing jQuery on our web performance
Austria: https://design.austria.info/en/design-system/
quintussss··on Study Shows Anti-Piracy Ads Often Made People Pirate More
This is hilarious. The author even explains the law concerning such streams:

A private citizen can at most pay a 150€ fine as well as 10 to 15€ for the film itself.

Considering how unlikely you are to be found out this is as close to advertising illegal streams as you can get.

quintussss··on Show HN: Markdown as web page/site
I visited the documentation site on a slow mobile connection and it took a long time and even a refresh to load. This seems to be a bad way of doing something that has been solved by static site generators for a long time.
quintussss··on Ask HN: Who is using C++ as the main language for new project?
Don't know your use case, but C++ for a REST api seems extreme overkill. Any performance benefits would most likely be nullified by network latency
