quinnjh··on It's normal to play the same song over and over again (2016)
On tikTok _everything_ is an adhd thing. The algorithmic loop practically gives you it.
quinnjh··on No one wants to download your S*@$
Well put, but im not sure what the incentive is for content recommendation algorithms to scale down :/
quinnjh··on The SQLite Code of Ethics
At a time of decaying social bonds, cultural fragmentation, and no consensus reality, i would much rather work somewhere with an explicit code like this than the countless "we are good people" places that will never define what "being good people" is until they are on the opposite side of a courtroom. Having shared values is very important for a team.

"Computer" in 1940 meant a woman who does computations

quinnjh··on What caused the hallucinations of the Oracle of Delphi?
Probably the same way you can construct a data oracle to project out guesses for what a time series will do?

The thinking goes: the more, nd better sources of market intelligence you can feed to the oracle, the better predictions it can make.

I would assume the oracle at delphi was being fed the most / best market intelligence to then prophesize from

quinnjh··on What caused the hallucinations of the Oracle of Delphi?

Good thing the United States has a constitutional amendment that totally protects us from having our location data harvested sold and deanonymized by thousands of data brokers!
quinnjh··on Always tell kids the truth (2019)
Arguably part of the reason TO put on the production IMO- kids get a firsthand lesson with low stakes about platos cave

depending on wether your definitions of propoganda and malware include rick astley, thats exactly what they did
quinnjh··on 300 Drones Formed a QR Code That Rick Rolled Dallas on April Fools' Day
Are you suggesting a drone inspecting power poles would be unable to see over a fence?
quinnjh··on Choose your status game wisely
Is this the same logic as religiously shunning wealth for returns in the afterlife/spiritual realm? Maybe this is how you counter the maybe?
quinnjh··on IP over Avian Carriers RFC 1149 event (2001)
The united states consumer protection twitter has been championing humor in this area https://mobile.twitter.com/USCPSC/status/1478844214574305282?

I like your points about the necessity of humor and i think its the only way to the future for us without mass psychosis and cultural schizming. When biomorphic-engineered bird-drones can fly autonomously, and pigeons have been carrying IP for the ruling class for thousands of years, we are going to need some comedy to settle the #birdsarereal issue

quinnjh··on Decrypting your own HTTPS traffic with Wireshark
Doubtful. Collapse and revolution are just tools of the market. The market which now has eyes and ears in your trashcan.
quinnjh··on Jailed baby gene scientist ‘should be made responsible’ for the children
Thanks for your take! I have more faith in the internal compass of people taking things seriously than i do in outsourcing ethics, but this doesnt mean that i conversely trust bad actors.

Surely not advocating for the latter, i think informed consent and voluntarism should be required. Personally not sure where i stand on some of the leading edges of genetic tech, but i also appreciate that there likely are arguments for development akin to atomic science. My hope is that we can continue to support and synthesize a broad spectrum of humanity rather than a few quantifiably valuable breeds. Im biased since i have a sibling with disability who i value more than the ethics boards that will triage him off of a ventilator :)

quinnjh··on A sequence that we see all the time in the world of junk science
In other news: coke is now pepsi. Citizens are expected to remember this when ordering.
quinnjh··on A sequence that we see all the time in the world of junk science
Maybe we could innoculate our populace with truth that aligns with facts-on-the-ground? I mean inagine if russia dropped the biolabs propoganda and americans were like "yeah i know, my tax dollars help pay for that to preserve my nations interests abroad"

Its not hard to understand why people are uncomfortable injecting something harmful in small dose- but its how we develop a proper immune response. We need to think big picture biosecurity in information domain.

quinnjh··on A sequence that we see all the time in the world of junk science
At this point, true facts are considered russian propoganda when the press secretary has an agenda of full fiction.

Hey at least youre not blindly following experts. Id rather end up in your camp ;)

Being gay was considered a disease. I have mental illness. The jews were considered unclean.

Nazism is a spiritual disease and one i would be happy seeing continually wiped off the face of the earth.

Would you mind peeking at a comment i placed above? I have links in that one which address your concern directly.

Eugenic ethics: https://www.csustan.edu/history/hitlers-ethic

A quote from feynman: "Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts"

Also eugenics is literally the belief that the genome can and should be improved via intervention beyond mate selection. Which you already hold. If you are incapable of seeing the connection between "we should be allowed to edit the genome" -> "we should improve the human genome" then i doubt you are engaging on good faith and im concerned about your elementary mental capacity

quinnjh··on Jailed baby gene scientist ‘should be made responsible’ for the children
Well, they seem to have done so, as have many believers of scientism. As well as the doctors who forcible sterilized and lobotomized undesirables. WE certainly cannot though. Humanity needs some of us to keep true north.
quinnjh··on Jailed baby gene scientist ‘should be made responsible’ for the children
In Hitler's Ethic Weikart helps unlock the mystery of Hitler's evil by vividly demonstrating the surprising conclusion that Hitler's immorality flowed from a coherent ethic. Hitler was inspired by evolutionary ethics to pursue the utopian project of biologically improving the human race.

https://www.csustan.edu/history/hitlers-ethic

Further- if we use dynamical system theory and look at coastal engineering-when we apply a control (say a barrier wall or "groyne" at the beach, to retain the nice sand) mother nature with time will work around it (the sand is carried by the tide and waves to carve out of the beach and deposit on the back of the retaining wall) https://www.researchgate.net/figure/a-The-terminal-groyne-sy...

Engineering nature properly requires a liberatory embrace of differentiation, diversity, and ultimately futility. The natSoc obsession with systemic perfection and crystallization leads somewhere predictable, and we rightly stamped the movement out (though many of the doctors worked w and moved to the US, and allies have had their share of eugenic fantasies and doctrines).

We need to wake up from the childlike belief in the infallibility of scientism. As Richard Feynman put it: "Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts"

This is how eugenics happens
quinnjh··on Everyday Magic in the Middle Ages (2021)
What I find particularly curious is why exactly did people start to believe posting something or saying something on hackernews can actually have any real effect. Is logical absurdity (doing an action which consumes energy of an effort but has no obvious effect) exactly the force meant to do the work here perhaps? No fun making, actually trying to dissect the logic on which does the magic stand :-P

Sorry i made fun. Really though what is this comment but a spell(ing)? I cast my spelling and expect an effect wether my reasoning is valid or not. Methods that seem to have a compelling causal loop at play get distilled into divinity practices such as "tarot" or "tweeting" each themselves requiring a larger semantic web to make sense of.

Way back in the day, a religious leader was described as a man of the cloth, which sounds eerily similar to todays CTOs leading their monasteries of illuminaries to build out "service fabric". Solomons temple had two columns, both draped with networking.

Just as with hn comments, one can dismiss it all, or one can approach it with suspension of disbelief.

What is the logical causal chain that compels professional sports players to do their "lucky wiggle" before a serve?

quinnjh··on On the Weaponisation of Open Source
Something that comes to mind is the argument against aid NGOs in places with dire poverty and hunger. When an NGO comes to your town, where you are trying to build a farm business, and delivers months worth of free rice, can you afford to run your business? Similarly, can any russians make successful software as a service that analogues FOSS offerings? No they cant, because the alternative is available and free.

Remove the free rice and you satisfy your egos necessity for first order moral resolution via punishment- bad people dont get rice- but as for second order effects? Perhaps now it becomes feasible to build a sustainable farm (or apache competitor)

quinnjh··on On the Weaponisation of Open Source
Ok so its political, what if this political take where we encourage openness and interconnectivity is superior to the political take where we are reactionary? What if it literally is a winning strategy?

Im not saying it is necessarily- but i think to get past the division you have highlighted (apolitical universality vs political conservatism) there is perhaps a way to look at the various approaches and determine what approach would be technologically, logistically, and politically advantageous.

Let us let go of the idea it is apolitical, what now?
