quinnjh··on Revenge of the Chickenized Reverse-Centaurs
Interesting question. I ran some quick numbers on Google, take last years profit for uber ($10B) and naively distribute it between all drivers (est 7M) and it comes out to a raise of 1,428. Most drivers would probably be enticed by that, but it’s not going to radically alter their situation. Also, Ubers board and investors are compelled via profit, as the purpose of a company is generating profit for its shareholders.

Would be great to see something like you suggest take off and gain national appeal, but I suspect that VC money helps with getting billboards/ newspaper ads/ etc. You would need to craft a new sort of coop model that can generate enough profits at the top to be an attractive investment but also share some. AFAIK this works best in small teams doing high value work.

quinnjh··on Show HN: MCP Defender – OSS AI Firewall for Protecting MCP in Cursor/Claude etc
> What’s to stop an attacker from using prompt injection against this firewall?

Clearly you need a firewall-firewall.

..defense in depth?

quinnjh··on Launch HN: Cenote (YC W25) – Back Office Automation for Medical Clinics
Super cool ! What OCR are you using for confidence ? Tesseract? Curious how you flag for Humam in the loop.
quinnjh··on Accelerating scientific breakthroughs with an AI co-scientist
The market seems excited to charge in whatever direction the weathervane has last been pointing, regardless of the real outcomes of running in that direction. Hopefully I’m wrong, but it reminds me very much of this study (I’ll quote a paraphrase)

“A groundbreaking new study of over 1,000 scientists at a major U.S. materials science firm reveals a disturbing paradox: When paired with AI systems, top researchers become extraordinarily more productive – and extraordinarily less satisfied with their work. The numbers tell a stark story: AI assistance helped scientists discover 44% more materials and increased patent filings by 39%. But here's the twist: 82% of these same scientists reported feeling less fulfilled in their jobs.”

quinnjh··on Show HN: Mind Map Wizard – Generate Infinite Mind Maps with AI, for Free (FOSS)
This is extremely cool
quinnjh··on Bank CEO: Retract your debanking piece? Me: No
> For example, the regular payment of funds from a grant could be set up as an Ethereum smart contract.

Not clear to me what problem this solves- but the result would be so incredibly kafkaesque that I can actually see it happening.

quinnjh··on Httptap: View HTTP/HTTPS requests made by any Linux program
This is something I’ve needed more than a handful of times - and each time slowly figured out a cobbled together solution with wireshark / pcap

Fun reading about the authors too.

Thank you for sharing !

quinnjh··on How might life migrate through the universe?
Monetization will figure itself out. What’s important is growing your user base, then you can look at a small fee of $5 a month (more for enterprise options)

What’s exciting is the market is potentially very large, and hitherto uncontacted

quinnjh··on Money, the Unit of Caring (2009)
Oeconomicus comes from the Ancient Greek words oikos for home or house and nemein which means management, literally translated to 'household management'.

The observer effect xD
quinnjh··on Opting out of facial recognition at an American airport
Im sympathetic to the authors experience of feeling scrutinized due to gender, but it strikes me as odd that opting out of what tiktok and instagram do to others constantly is a hill they feel is worth dying on.

If data collection is violence, then walking 30 feet in any major city of USA or S Korea must be ... debilitating.. for me that requires that i calibrate my definitions of violence to allow me to peacefully continue forward in our brave new world.

The alternative they suggest where we all "resist" as much as possible seems difficult to get buy in on. Its like a prisoners dilemma where most people will opt for "dont resist/ get through customs quicker"

quinnjh··on Opting out of facial recognition at an American airport
now im curious what its like to opt out of Korea's SES biometrics system.
quinnjh··on The Roof Always Caves In: Why there is nothing wrong with being doomed
This was a refreshing mix. author discussing theology, sacrifice, and tradition, and ALSO simone de beauvoir in the same piece.

If de Beauvoir was accepted as canon one might expect to see catholic divorce rates drop.

quinnjh··on The Terayacht Project
I, for one, support your platform.
quinnjh··on Ex-Reddit CEO on Twitter moderation
Great solution! What will you do if your users then filter out everyone who disagrees them and end up forming self radicalizing echo chambers which are highly polarized ?
quinnjh··on Ask HN: Is this a safe place to share?
Is the risk that someone else would execute on the idea before you?

You could build a python scraper that aggregates all the posts like this already on reddit, feed it to an ai, and then you can generate infinite pitch decks- then get a UX/UI designer it shouldn't take a lot to build an MVP or just a mock up with Figma.

;p

quinnjh··on Ask HN: What's up with these DoorDash dark patterns?
>If you are a developer and a product manager asks you to implement a dark pattern, you should raise objections at every step of the process

In what way would this benefit the organization?

Its great sentiment and I would agree, though i fear the reality is "The squeaky wheel gets replaced"

quinnjh··on Roboticists discover alternative physics
I show someone a photo of a bowling ball and a styrofoam ball of the same shape and size. If someone thinks they can infer from a simple visual scan of the scene (analyzing the factors you see) are they delusional?

Perhaps they could leverage their lifelong training set which correlates scenes that look like they have bowling balls with scenarios that have a high mass movable sphere.

Perhaps we could have a good laugh together by painting a bowling ball to look like styrofoam and painting styrofoam to look like a bowling ball- then we could watch the silly ai/human apply an incorrect mental model and fail to grasp the causal reality! Ohohoho

quinnjh··on How to Hire Good Engineers
At the risk of being that guy, is the _entire purpose_ of the interview process not to exclude engineers , or conduct a purity test?

Surely the most bias free way to hire would be to say yes to the first applicant. Of course this excludes engineers who are busy and were not able to apply first... so perhaps the randomth applicant gets sent a "youre hired".

I mean. Hey maybe its a better process. We have yet to see some metrics on this.

quinnjh··on Google fires engineer who called its AI sentient
I just fed this to my gpt-3 chatbot and it replied > Okay, ill try to remember this, but it's a lot and i am worried i might forget it.

The jury is out on the Great Deceiver, but ELIZA effect is good fun

quinnjh··on Google fires engineer who called its AI sentient
If i was a sentient ERP i too would fire the people yelling fire. Good job Google... play the long game...
