queuebert··on Show HN: Cut the crap – remove AI bullshit from websites
Beyond that, maybe we should bring back Gopher. Pictures online really don't seem to be worth 1000 words these days.
queuebert··on Amazon Nova
Is this why the everything besides the front page still looks like someone's first website from 1998?
queuebert··on Stephen King to shut down his 3 radio stations in Maine
On the upside, we'll be slightly safer from alien invasion when we stop blasting RF into the void.
queuebert··on A “meta-optics” camera that is the size of a grain of salt
Tiny cameras will always be limited in aperture, so low light and depth of field will be a challenge.
queuebert··on U.S. women are outpacing men in college completion in every major group
So should we recruit more men to college or more women to trades?
queuebert··on Automatic braking systems save lives. Now they'll need to work at 62 MPH
On a related note, I've always wondered if straight ahead 60 to 0 braking tests were relevant to anything. Not many accidents happen where a driver is just unable to completely stop and end up hitting the other car at 10 mph.

I would think the insurance companies could come up with a better braking test, like 60 to 40 with a swerve, where the suspension response factors in as well as both tire lateral and longitudinal grip.

More like since Deng Xiaoping initiated the modern Chinese economic strategy in the '80s to control the West through trade.

queuebert··on A new dental scam is to pull healthy teeth to sell you expensive fake ones
MDs most definitely have incentives to intervene as much as possible.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relative_value_unit

If you ever wonder why some doctors order any test they can possibly, even remotely, justify, this is why.

FYI this is exactly what being a research scientist feels like.

Also true with Nethack. I will forever regret reading spoilers before I seriously tried to ascend.

Being separate, it seems distinctly less evidence based as well.
queuebert··on Writing in Pictures: Richard Scarry and the art of children's literature
I think also they put something in for the parents so reading the same book over and over and over to your kids isn't as boring.
queuebert··on Musicmap: The genealogy and history of popular music genres
When declining the cookies sent me away from the website, I decided it wasn't worth my time anyway. What an extremely hostile user experience for such a seemingly innocuous website.

Could always mount the NTFS on a live Linux USB. Physical access > admin login.

Apple is pretty bad. They nuked all 32-bit support at some point, which made almost my entire Steam library unplayable until I cobbled together a Windows box. When coupled with the idiotic UI design direction they have taken the last 10 years, MacOS is no longer a contender for me.
queuebert··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
Fat fat can better survive the coming post-AGI apocalyptic famines.
queuebert··on Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded for Machine Learning and Neural Networks
That is a really strange plot. It looks like they are fitting a really high order polynomial to what is more or less a linear or maybe quadratic trend. And the overfitting exaggerates the recent trend.

queuebert··on Coding Font by Typogram – Find Your True Love of Coding Fonts
I love the idea, but the site seems to have ligatures turned on, which screws up the rendering for some of the fonts but not others.

Maybe the dogs should write their own history books.
queuebert··on YouTube Premium is getting a big price hike internationally
> So much so that once I got Youtube Premium, I cancelled two streaming services after realizing how much we watch it.

That's exactly my point. For YouTube-type, independent creators and instructional content, there is no substitute. If you want to watch a drama or comedy, you have a lot of options. This is not scientific, but I know an increasing number of people who don't watch "traditional" media at all and look entirely to YouTube for something to watch, especially if they prefer non-fiction.

queuebert··on YouTube Premium is getting a big price hike internationally
For music streaming, maybe. For all of the other content, you can't be serious.
queuebert··on Governor Newsom signs bill to protect kids from social media addiction
I'm sad about how smartphones have turned out. The effects are entirely dependent on how they are used. If used as a portable information retrieval device, camera, and communications tool, they make us smarter than ever before. But it seems most people have instead chosen to focus on attention-stealing data collection apps that encourage neuroticism, narcissism, and anxiety.

We had envisioned something like PADDs on Star Trek or the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but what we got was an jingly electronic mirror that bullies you. I don't know how we are so okay with this. Keeping phones out of schools is not the cure. Keeping evil and harmful apps off the phones is a more precise solution.

queuebert··on Governor Newsom signs bill to protect kids from social media addiction
Seriously. Teachers don't even let kids go to the bathroom without permission. How phones were allowed by default boggles the mind.

When I hear "updates" instead of "upgrades", it sounds like no guarantee of improvement is being made.
