questime··on FTX Agreement with Binance
It went to the Democratic National Committee and AI ethics organizations.
questime··on FTX Agreement with Binance
CZ - "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."
questime··on Rental Arbitrage Is TikTok’s Latest Get-Rich-Quick Scheme
You are smoking some good stuff if you think Meta is in "western media's" good books over the past few years. How often have Tik Tok execs been dragged in front of Congress?
questime··on Microsoft Earning Results Q3 2022
It's more because Google is much more in the consumer business.
questime··on Why Johnny Can’t Code
Eh, I don't buy this - more people are learning to code than ever. There are infinite resources online, it has penetrated society's conscious that this is an easy way to get a really well paying job. And there have never existed as many people who can code ever before - Johnny will likely know someone who does it for a living. Johnny also consumes infinite amounts of software from birth.

I bet there is no data backing the Author's claim except - "The way I learned to doesn't exist so noone is learning anymore." I will refer everyone to go look at the numbers - whether it's CS grads per capita or SWEs per capita we are rising quickly.

questime··on Remote work may have fueled a baby boom among U.S. women
The biggest blessing of remote work is being able to tune out and do something else during useless meetings.
questime··on Remote work may have fueled a baby boom among U.S. women
Wouldn't that make them software engineers as well?
questime··on Google is “concerned” that Samsung is losing customers to Apple
The other android devices are even worse, Apple is eating their lunch
questime··on Ask HN: Are VC startups and FANG the only places to earn large sums of money?
Hudson River Trading, HFT has a lot more status games around intelligence. An interviewer from HRT was playing those kind of games w/ me which really turned me off.
questime··on SAT score distributions in Michigan
This is why I encourage all my south asian friends/relatives to not identify as asian when applying to jobs/universities. Even mixed race is better, hispanic and african american makes things easy mode - I get interviews guaranteed wherever I want.
questime··on Tech salaries continue to increase as firms search for talent
Salaries yes, TC no. I've started ignoring all these articles about tech compensation since it's become so predictable that they are simply using salary which may be reasonable for the median dev but in HN world a lot of comp is equity based. It seems like compensation is significantly depressed with the most lucrative employers retreating from the hiring market.
questime··on Immigration accounts for over 94% of Canada’s population growth in Q2 of 2022
Just based on age alone I guarantee that immigrants raise supply of healthcare FAR MORE than raise demand.
questime··on Google is shutting down Stadia
They have by far the most awful customer service of any big tech company. One or two experiences of dealing with issues (in my case Google Fi) turns you into a life long hater.
questime··on CIA launches a podcast, hoping to ‘demystify’ the agency and boost recruitment
Security clearances seem like the biggest issue here. Back when I was in college they needed them even for internships which was a deal breaker since you effectively had to apply for the internship a year earlier than other ones so that you could get clearance.
questime··on Twilio cutting 11% – Letter from CEO [pdf]
That's good to know - It's strange to me that they don't see how this language could be seen the wrong way on a layoff email. It's not a leap to read this in a discriminatory way.
questime··on Twilio cutting 11% – Letter from CEO [pdf]
What does Anti-Racist layoff mean?
questime··on Ask HN: Is Google still a cool place to work?
At a 100,000+ company it would be impossible to generalize
questime··on New Genes for Eye Colour
Excellent answer but I will add that phenotyping eye color also adds noise - 23andMe relies on questionnaires and the users have some discretion in identifying their own eye color for example. And since the trait seems so polygenic you do need a ton of samples.

The computation complexity isn't as big a deal because the data here is genotyped not sequenced.

questime··on Covid career change – from cruise ship cleaner to developer
It's really tough but you could take online classes and read textbooks. Also side projects. But it being difficult to teach yourself is the whole point, I rarely see bootcampers working in certain disciplines because of the amount of CS education (networks, OS, algorithms) they need to self teach themselves. I'm in the camp that CS degrees are valuable for that reason.
questime··on Covid career change – from cruise ship cleaner to developer
Or you could work towards having a higher moat skillset. It's hard to work in distributed systems or embedded systems without a lot of training.
