quantumofmalice··on Modern Front-end in Rails
I've built a fairly large, modern web app using rails and intercooler (https://github.com/LeadDyno/intercooler-js) and I've been very happy with the results: simple, feels modern and easy to extend.

The two technologies play very well together and I've been able to add AJAX at the high value points in the app, rather than biting off a huge bit of infrastructure that needs to be maintained everywhere.

Somewhat humorously, this sentiment could just as easily have been lifted from an alt-right blog as from a radically left website.

Interesting times.

quantumofmalice··on How White Nationalism Courts Internet Nerd Culture
The IQ denials and blank slate creationists are hurting exactly the people they claim they are trying to help. (Hard to tell if it is genuine, it might just be virtue signaling.)

The best thing we could be doing for disadvantaged groups is encouraging the smartest to have loads and loads of children.

quantumofmalice··on The 'masculine mystique' – why men can't ditch the baggage of being a bloke
I hate to ruin a good Guardian anecdotal narrative, but male happiness has been trending upward for the last 40 years. Females are the ones becoming less happy, for reasons I will leave to the reader to speculate on:

http://www.nytimes.com/images/blogs/freakonomics/posts/HAP23...

As far as why men can't ditch "the baggage" of striving to win in dominance & competence hierarchies, it is because it was necessary for hundreds of thousands of years for a male to achieve reproductive success. And, all else equal, it still is.

quantumofmalice··on I still love Kierkegaard
This is the basis of perhaps one of the most disturbing paintings of Goya, Saturn Devouring His Son:

It is also worth recalling that many Christians, myself included, believe that in the Eucharist we are devouring The Son.

It is a strange world we live in.

No problem, I understand.

Best of luck with your studies.

quantumofmalice··on I still love Kierkegaard
I am a Christian and was describing the sacrifice of Christ on The Cross in terms of the earlier conception of child sacrifice, tying in Girard's insights.

I very much admire Orthodoxy. I haven't read any formal orthodox theology, but Dostoevsky is perhaps my favorite author.

I wish you well with your studies and I hope some day to perhaps read your work.

That's fair, these are all very small bits of information we are exchanging of course, but I would still encourage you to watch the Peterson lectures, at least the first one, to see how an intelligent and very well read non-religious person confronts these stories.

I am saying this from a genuine position of good will. I will try to be better about not making assumptions about people.

quantumofmalice··on I still love Kierkegaard
I highly recommend watching Jordan Peterson's lecture series on the bible stories.

You are doing yourself a huge disservice by thinking about religion in this way.

> And of course Jesus is that exact same myth of child sacrifice (with a twist: he dies but lives again).

The twist is more complex than that: it is God sacrificing his own Son, which is also Him, in place of all sacrifices. God becomes the scapegoat.

Rene Girard talks about this idea in this interview:

quantumofmalice··on Who Will Rein in Facebook? Challengers Are Lining Up
Yeah, I agree. They need to have an ideological filter for the popular page or, better, do something like an ideological page-rank algorithm so it can be personalized. Right now it is pretty shocking content, a result of Gab's commitment to free speech and the purging of the (alt) right on other social media platforms.
quantumofmalice··on Who Will Rein in Facebook? Challengers Are Lining Up
Right. I guess I should be more explicit in my prediction that the market will move faster than the governments will.

I know that people here don't like Gab, but looking at it rationally they look like the most likely challenger in that the leadership understands the coming tech stack that will route around whatever governments and private consortiums come up with, and they have the cash on hand and ideological commitment to do it.

quantumofmalice··on Who Will Rein in Facebook? Challengers Are Lining Up
Gab will.

Not because the current site is that good, but because Torba understands that a blockchain based distributed social network that is able to compensate content creators is the future:

https://gab.ai/a/posts/13902759

and he has the money to support building it, with gab subscriptions providing an infinite runway, the StartEngine 1M+ campaign, his legal warchest for the fight w/ Google, etc.

quantumofmalice··on Don’t Build a Startup, Build a Movement
Brand follows product, not vice versa.

Good product allows for a good brand to be built. Mailchimp only looks "simple" now. When it first hit, it was revolutionary in its simplicity and effectiveness.

So build a startup, then, maybe, you can build a movement.

Awesome project, Wirth is a hero.

What was your inspiration? How fare are you planning on taking this project?
