quantumofmalice··on The lucrative business of America’s opioid crisis
As I said in a sibling comment, I view race as too broad a concept to usefully generate social identity, and the fluidity of the concept makes it slippery to deal with. Your second point is a good one, I will think more about it. That said, it seems to me that in the long run relatively homogenous populations (really, many smaller politically independent homogeneous populations, as well as politically independent hetrogeneous populations for the smarter folks) is the best way to maximize social identity and minimize conflict.

By the way, I appreciate you taking the time to thoughtfully respond to my comment. It is difficult to say what I think may be the truth (with, I hope, no maliciousness) in todays environment, so thank you.

quantumofmalice··on The lucrative business of America’s opioid crisis
I expect there to continue to be multi-ethnic cities and neighborhoods within cities, which is a fairly common occurrence throughout history, particular in capital cities of empires, which is what I would describe New York as. There is no doubt that some people (particularly smart people) highly value the diversity and cosmopolitanism that cities of this form provide. On the other hand, people who value high social trust and stronger social identity would probably prefer to living in more homogenous (and less urban) environments.

It seems to me like the american continent, anyway, is large enough to give everyone what they would like, without either interfering with one another politically.

quantumofmalice··on The lucrative business of America’s opioid crisis
I don't believe there is strong evidence that a metaculture (really, multiculturalism) will survive and not devolve into squabbling ethnoses, particularly on the scale of the north american continent.

It seems like smaller, more homogonous political units is the best way to avoid conflict, and I don't see why that has to be malicious. My main problem with most of the ethno-nationalists that I read is that they are really racialists or pan-europeanists, which strikes me as almost (almost) as useless for generating inter-class solidarity as appealing to universal humanism.

quantumofmalice··on The lucrative business of America’s opioid crisis
> Unfortunately one person suppressing their unethical behavior is inconsequential. If an opportunity exists, eventually someone will use it.

This isn't solely a feature of capitalism. Any system is going to devolve into the strong eating the weak unless the strong identify with and have solidarity with the weak.

I have recently become much more willing to listen to ethno-nationalists of all ethnoses based on this realization: stripped of any imperialistic impulse it may be the best way to generate cross class identity in a given political unit. I tend to think size/scale matters as well, perhaps more so, so that the strong are forced into closer quarters with the weak and so that social interactions are iterated, leading to a better stable state.

quantumofmalice··on The lucrative business of America’s opioid crisis
What bothers me is that this can be interpreted as a "New York thing", to quote Lorne Michaels, and I don't like going down that road.
quantumofmalice··on The lucrative business of America’s opioid crisis
> The industry of addiction treatment is haphazardly regulated, poorly understood and expanding at a rapid clip, bringing in $35 billion a year.

Why not focus on the root company and family actually getting rich off selling the damned opioids (Purdue Pharma and the Sacklers, respectively)?

I don't understand how this company and family haven't been sued into the ground yet.

quantumofmalice··on Bitcoin Is Evil (2013)
> BitCoin looks like it was designed as a weapon intended to damage central banking and money issuing banks, with a Libertarian political agenda in mind—to damage states ability to collect tax and monitor their citizens financial transactions.

"evil"

quantumofmalice··on An unsolved Renaissance murder mystery
I had an account previously with karma in that range and never saw anything like that. Looking back at previous submissions, they appear to be historically oriented. Maybe the account got flagged as interesting on that account.

On the other hand, three votes over three hours is a pretty insanely low bar, especially for a non-technical article.

quantumofmalice··on An unsolved Renaissance murder mystery
3 upvotes over three hours and it makes the front page? A murder story from the renaissance?

What did dang mean by this?

quantumofmalice··on Apple’s New iPhones Get a Lukewarm Reception from Buyers
The iPhone SE is more than enough phone for 90% of the people out there.

I wish they'd make a smaller version of it.

quantumofmalice··on The Trouble with Psychological Darwinism (1998)
> So, what matters with regard to the question whether the mind is an adaptation is not how complex our behaviour is, but how much change you would have to make in an ape’s brain to produce the cognitive structure of a human mind. And about this, exactly nothing is known

Seems like begging the question to me, fam.

> you could get some by a miracle.

Well, at least that would be intellectually honest.

quantumofmalice··on Ricardo's Comparative Advantage After Two Centuries
I know that is the standard history, I took economics at Berkeley and was taught all that. I simply don't believe that's the major factor. I think productive capacity and innovation are more important than international trade, beyond a certain scale.

I do cry for the middle class and lower classes in the west, and for the beset upon labor of the third world. It worries me greatly: my class lives very well, but friends and family that didn't win the IQ lottery are falling apart.

quantumofmalice··on Ricardo's Comparative Advantage After Two Centuries
> No, they should reflect on the fact that rich and powerful has united across the globe to enslave all innocent people without even giving them a chance to express their opposition.

I think this is going too far the other way. I appreciate the anger that this topic can generate, but it is always important to remember that markets have brought huge numbers of people out of poverty.

The best way that I can think of to deal with the problems of the market involves creating solidarity across class lines. That may require two very unpopular ideas: restricting trade across national borders so people don't cheat on that solidarity, and generating that solidarity via social identity, which is most often based on, everybody get their fainting couch ready, ethnicity and culture.

Yikes.

quantumofmalice··on Ricardo's Comparative Advantage After Two Centuries
Simplistic ricardian arguments for free trade ignore production dynamics over time, the asymmetry between the mobility of labor and capital, productivity infrastructure, global externalities such as ocean and atmospheric poisoning, asymmetries in labor and environmental standards, etc.

I think at this point everyone capable of doing so understands that international trade has benefits. I would prefer if the intellectual class in the west recognized and reflected on the costs that the middle and lower classes in the west, in particular, have paid for it.

quantumofmalice··on In Japan, small children take the subway and run errands alone (2015)
This is not surprising: Japan is a high trust, low crime ethnostate.
quantumofmalice··on REST is the new SOAP
As I mentioned elsewhere in the thread, there are two posts on the intercooler site that specifically addresses this issue that I found very compelling:

http://intercoolerjs.org/2016/01/18/rescuing-rest.html

http://intercoolerjs.org/2016/05/08/hatoeas-is-for-humans.ht...

quantumofmalice··on A Clarification
> I didn’t mean that we need to tolerate brilliant homophobic jerks in the lab so that we can have scientific progress.

Well, Sam, you didn't say that.

Rather, the totalitarian left, exactly who the article was criticizing, sensed heresy and pounced, without any goodwill or thoughtfulness.

They did exactly what you implied they would do, and now you are apologizing for them doing it.

2017, everybody.

quantumofmalice··on REST is the new SOAP
REST isn't appropriate as a description of JSON-based apis because JSON isn't a natural hypertext and thus makes HATEOAS difficult to implement. Most JSON APIs described as REST are really RPC APIs with a bit of URL layout taken from the REST world.

Unfortunately XML-RPC was such a nightmare that calling something JSON-RPC was out of the question. Shame.

There are a few blog posts up on the intercooler website that discuss this that I found enlightening:

http://intercoolerjs.org/2016/01/18/rescuing-rest.html

quantumofmalice··on Overcoming Us vs. Them
I have noticed that nothing that I say on HN, except for saying that the scientific evidence is that intelligence is mostly genetic and heritable, gets more downvotes more quickly than discussing secession.

I think the topic has been successfully in the mind of college educated people, so any mention of it immediately brings to mind both slavery and, somewhat amusingly, fascism.

It is too bad. As I said above, I see it as the best way to avoid violence.

quantumofmalice··on RESTyped: End-To-end Typing for REST APIs with TypeScript
Allow me to be a bit autistic here: these APIs are barely REST-ful. They are effectively RPC, which is appropriate, because REST doesn't easily apply to a non-hypertext data format, which disallows HATEOAS.

I wish XML-RPC hadn't ruined things so utterly, so we could properly refer to these APIs as JSON-RPC and leave REST for hypertext-based architectures (e.g. intercooler.js + html)

quantumofmalice··on Overcoming Us vs. Them
That's a reductio ad absurdum. There are reasonable levels of division well above tribal levels. Singapore is basically a city state, and I don't notice a collapse of civilization there.

Territories with strong social identity would maintain political union, territories with weak social identity and severe political disagreements would split. As much as is possible, no one is ruled by people they hate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subsidiarity

We are taught this is impossible because the ruling class, who favors ever more centralization, wishes that to be so.

quantumofmalice··on Overcoming Us vs. Them
There is a mechanism for dealing with this: secession.

A lot of violence will be saved if we start agreeing to amicable divorces.

I don't expect us to do that, so, sadly, I expect a lot of violence.

quantumofmalice··on The State of JavaScript 2017
It doesn't have to. I've said this in a few other threads lately: I'm using intercooler.js which is basically HTML++ for a lot of my work now, and I barely ever write javascript unless I need a front-end plugin of some sort.

You get 90% of the functionality at 10% of the complexity, and your back end looks essentially the same as it always has, in whatever language you want.

quantumofmalice··on Turbolinks: SPA-like Experience without the SPA-framework Hassle
I hadn't thought of it in those terms, but I definitely agree. I also like that I don't have to decide up front that I'm going to write my whole app using it and can add it in later on where it makes sense. I don't know what to call that, but it's nice.

I wouldn't try to write a video game or anything like that with it, but for most of what I do it gives me what I want with very little complexity.

quantumofmalice··on Turbolinks: SPA-like Experience without the SPA-framework Hassle
Turbolinks is OK, but I prefer intercooler for HTML-based apps because it gives me a lot more control:

https://github.com/LeadDyno/intercooler-js/

I don't use it for everything, but it's great for a lot of my work.

quantumofmalice··on Amazon delivery drivers complain about bad work conditions
I'm not big on Sunday retail either. I prefer the older tradition where most stores were closed on Sunday so people could be with their families.
quantumofmalice··on Amazon delivery drivers complain about bad work conditions
There was a time when you could give a christmas bonus to the mail man. I wish that the delivery men were more consistent, I would love to be able to give them a cash gift for all the work they do for me and my family on a regular basis.

Unfortunately it seems like during the holidays the usual delivery guy isn't around and it's a chaotic mix of people.

While we are here, I hate that they are now making people deliver on Sundays. Every year I struggle more with the morality of the package economy.

quantumofmalice··on A Translator’s Reckoning with the Women of the Odyssey
There is no historical evidence that everyone always thinks the young appear selfish and without morals. Very often the youth have lead moral revivals (or panics, according to tastes.)

I don't mean to be unpleasant, but the idea that there has always been an oppositional libertine youth culture of selfishness is a modern canard.

quantumofmalice··on A Translator’s Reckoning with the Women of the Odyssey
There is strong historical evidence for civilizational cycles.
quantumofmalice··on Why men fight
Men fight because since time immemorial violence was (and, to an extent, remains) extremely effective for securing mates.

Although male aggression is not tied solely to it, testosterone injections should help a sufficiently reflective transsexual understand this over time.
