quantumfoam··on Why Child Care Is So Expensive
Because they don’t want you to reproduce you dumb fuck.
quantumfoam··on E-scooter company goes bust after spending big on Facebook ads

quantumfoam··on Jeff Bezos warns US military it risks losing tech supremacy
It was the highlights, most of the full video shows China flexing its military powers. Whatever man, we could all live in our bubbles and not admit that other countries have a more disciplined military and one that might produce and showcase offensive weapons that are a modern threat.
quantumfoam··on Jeff Bezos warns US military it risks losing tech supremacy
I thought this was still an ongoing battle between corporate lawyers?

You might be interested in watching the 70th National Day anniversary to conclude what others in the military might have concluded; China has some military superiority. These are just the highlights [1].

quantumfoam··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
I'm thankful for not having to witness the slaughter of natives.
quantumfoam··on I'm not burned out, I'm pissed off
I'm supplying a +1 for this comment because it's hilarious to think of our industry as useless as the DEA.
quantumfoam··on A Startup Trying to Help Car Dealers Weather Hailstorms

quantumfoam··on Firefox Lockwise – Encrypted Password Manager
I really tried using this switching from Bitwarden. Unfortunately, mass import from another password manager wasn't possible and the feature set seemed limited.
quantumfoam··on Firefox is getting language translation
FWIW, DeepL has restrictions on IP depending on how often you translate things. I've had to connect to various VPNs to continue a conversation without having to login.

It is a good translation tool (and I've used several, Google, Bing) and sure, it's accurate and all but DeepL doesn't compare when it comes to conversational translation or, voice to text etc. If it's simple copy and pasting it does that sufficiently well.

quantumfoam··on Have Online Reviews Lost All Value?
I prefer to read the 1-star reviews. Often, there's nuggets of information written if it's not entirely someone's complaint about a product/thing.
quantumfoam··on WeWork says will file to withdraw IPO
Literally an office landlord. What a joke.
quantumfoam··on Epic Games is killing Linux support for games and software it acquired
I bought an HP x360z Envy recently and added PlayOnLinux which seems to be similar to going through the whole WINE setup of installer -- easy to do. The Android MOBAs I play with desktop client support work without issue. Getting Radeon driver support for VEGA 8 is an entirely different matter though. I'm running Fedora 30 and before that 29, before it's release, the Cheese camera app would flip through and flicker with the IR camera with no easy way to resolve it and thus, making it unusable. It sucks, because the only thing tying me to my Razer Stealth is gaming and that in turn, to Windows. I can't say Razer is hardware I could recommend though, think of it as the Apple of gaming hardware. Steep price with bloatware and in my case, the ocassional repair that leaves you without a laptop for days (my laptop case warped due to heat generated). Rather than replacing it because of fault, they just swapped the case and sent it back. I can expect this issue to happen in a few months again. Razer support is OK -- I've gone through a few cases where I had to talk to a x-tier technician who resolved a problem with the Razer Core e-GPU. Will gaming on Linux ever work? who knows. I'm excited for Google Stadia and hope it doesn't go the way of OnLive.
quantumfoam··on Ask HN: Are there any online trainings worth paying for?
Try checking out Oreilly's offerings and video training catalogue. Modern software training often with paths.

quantumfoam··on Productivity
+1 on the fasting, say what you would like about the products that HVMN (formally nootrobox) sells, but they have an awesome blog that covers keto/ketosis and nootropics use in general.

Update: didn't link.

quantumfoam··on Don't give away historic details about yourself
I usually just do a random hash. Also, really, really hate the sites that do not allow you free form text the question itself and rather populate a bunch of commonly known ones. FFS, if you're a web developer working on security questions, let the user make up the question. Agreed though, we should just do away with this as an authentication factor.
quantumfoam··on OnePlus Is Again Sending User Data to a Chinese Company Without User Consent
Seems to me like this might be a requirement for Asian markets or for selling phones in those regions. Author has tweeted that it's specific to Chinese regional locale/headset. Can't it be chalked up to the costs of doing business if sales plummet? OP5s owner here.
quantumfoam··on Ask HN: Are you using Brave for daily browsing?
I use Waterfox on desktop and it's the brand-less FF with all the tracking crap disabled. Hardly ever have to resort to using FF Quantum but when I do, rest assure, there's the song and dance every single time of having to go in about:config and adjust/disable everything.

On mobile, Brave with PIA's killswitch enabled for daily browsing but it doesn't matter because of GCM and I can't seem to rid myself entirely of Google.

quantumfoam··on No boundaries for user identities: Web trackers exploit browser login managers
For FF users: about:config - set signon.autofillForms to false.
quantumfoam··on Ask HN: How do you author your eBooks in 2017?
I myself don't publish but I've seen some authors use Markdown and [1] GitBooks. Kelsey Hightower wrote Kubernetes: The Hard Way in the same manner [2]. It reads nicely. For publishing, you could look into GumRoad [3]. When I do some technical writing, I personally like to use StackedIt which supports Markdown and allows you to export to PDF with custom layouts.

quantumfoam··on Ask HN: Are UML diagrams still used today?
Thanks for linking to Archimate! I've been looking for similar software to build out attack trees when doing threat modeling.

I've been using these in the past [1] MonoDraw and this free [2] diagramming website. Came across [3] Draw today, although I have yet to try it.

quantumfoam··on VPNs are not the solution to a policy problem
I'll just leave this here: https://github.com/trailofbits/algo/blob/master/README.md

I used a droplet on DigitalOcean to configure an Algo server. Very seamless setup, highly recommend. There's a $10 promo floating around: DROPLET10. You can self host too.

quantumfoam··on How Elizabeth Warren Took Down the CEO of Wells Fargo, and Why It Matters
Big whoop. No jail time served. Stumpf stepped down and the criminal enterprise (that remains till this day) was charged with millions that when compared to their profits (in the billions) range, what really was accomplished? The worst thing that happened here was he lost his job but kept a nice severance package and took a vacation. Talk about justice.
quantumfoam··on Noam Chomsky and the Bicycle Theory

quantumfoam··on Disappearing messages for Signal
I have to agree. Privacy is a right. It's not often you run into a free alternative that offer sync capabilities across all platforms and devices. You also have a way to restrict or remove access from unknown fingerprints. The only downside I see about Wire is that the option to "submit crash reports and usage data" is enabled by default but that's just an Advanced options visit away from disabling. Give Wire a try and give their white papers covering how they approach [1] privacy and [2] security a read.

Yes, a little more background on their "VPN" [1]. Could they start calling it for what it is? [2].

quantumfoam··on LogMeIn acquires Lastpass
I'm not affiliated with Dashlane in any manner but I thought I'd chime in with my experience as a user. I used to use LastPass but lost a bit of confidence in them when they asked users to reset their master password [1] when an anomaly was found present in network traffic from one of their DBs. Prior to this I was looking at open source alternatives but the syncing and add-ons for each browser (which made logging in and generating passwords easier offered by Dashlane) really caught my attention. These features aren't unique to Dashlane, I'm sure. New sign-ups reap the benefits of premium features for a month or so, then you could send an invite to a friend and accrue 6 free months of premium service when they sign up (which is what I did) for free. They also offer a public password generator [2] page. They support the major browsers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox). Dashlane also has a "security dashboard" which keeps track of password expiration, reuse, and weak password usage, with a base analysis score that gets presented to you when action on a site is required. If you want something for offline use and that is hardware based, I'd recommend checking out the Mooltipass [3]. I hope this helps.
