quantified··on Elon Musk Film Hit with Censorship
A few free speech defenders are consistently consistent about supporting it, but for the most part they are concerned about freedom of their favored speech. Even the ACLU has appeared to waffle a bit.
quantified··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
Drop-shipping for the late 2020s and early 2030s.
quantified··on Anthropic Is Building a Predictive Surveillance System to Monitor Activists
> “several individuals involved in incidents reported to police were already being tracked by Anthropic security.”

Comsider the tracking potential.

Now consider that they can perform textual analysis at a scale large enough to figure out who you are based on your linguistic fingerprints across HN, Meta, Github, forms you've filled out for you child's school, your doctor, or wherever else a service provider has used them.

These are "AI" companies but monitoring is what the AI is and will be used for.

quantified··on The war with Iran will not be won through airstrikes, so what's left?
America has a worse problem with it than Israel does, it sort of is America's problem. It's not the Israeli army taking lead or Israel's diplomacy taking a hit.
quantified··on The war with Iran will not be won through airstrikes, so what's left?
100k in debt as a 30 year old? Sock it to those college-educated fools.
quantified··on Just Bury Your Trash
Do note this is a Koch Bros pro-fossil publication. It'll call out some externalities but not others.
quantified··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Not baffling at all. Wasn't he against the two-button mouse?
quantified··on The Weed Got Too Strong
Ingesting since 8? Not advised for growing brains. It's not that it's too strong. Anyone can take weak flower and make strong edibles pretty easily. It's just available.
quantified··on Sam Altman says the economy is adapting to AI slower than he expected
[https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49471295] over there. Not much to it.
quantified··on The American People Hate Data Centers
Things that come to your attention as a fait accompli after your representatives sold you out under NDA are generally to be hated. If you see that the land was bought by straw purchasers, you saw deception at work. There's much in the way of underhandedness in various cases and as a member of those communities I'd be hating them on general principles.
quantified··on What Happens When the Cost of Intelligence Drops 100x
Brings up the question of what the intelligence is used for. Humans exploited intelligence for competition. With each other to wipe out other Homo species, mate more and collect resources, with other animals to limit predator impact and gain food. Intelligence will be used offensively by corporations and their people to extract more from consumers (make pricing opaque, terms of service more complicated, etc.) and scams far more sophisticated. The "consumer" will need extra intelligence to fight all that off. There are only so many meals you can expertly produce, shirts to fold, itineraries to fun places you can execute, but there's a practical infinity of traps to set and avoid.
quantified··on The Foothills of Bay Area House Party – By Scott Alexander
> “Terrible,” he says. “Geologists are just as cliquish as AI nerds, with their own set of ingroup tells and shibboleths. And they won’t stop using the word ‘lode-bearing’!”

I fear that humans will start to speak in Claudish. Perhaps it's happened and I'm thankfully not in the loop.

quantified··on White House Says Slavery Is Being Taught Wrong, Should Not Be So Negative
A positive spin would be "hey, we went to war about it and got rid of it" (mostly, except for prisoners, and we can discuss what counts as punishment/penance separately). But that sort of runs aground on how clear the record is about what the Confederacy was for, and therefore what all the current pride in it says.
quantified··on Flock impersonates journalist in order to cancel his hotel reservations
I've had a hotel cancel me and lie to my face that I called in. I was on a plane at the time they claimed I cancelled. It totally happens.
quantified··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
People have their priorities, and putting the data centers into their mix isn't what they asked for. To say "resource abusers think this is a resource abuse" isn't really a counter argument.
quantified··on The Mathematics of Economic Self-Destruction: Inside the "AI Layoff Trap"
Similar principle as "cash back" credit cards: make everyone else pay more for you to get your points, if everyone does it, you and they pay about 3-4% more than they would with cash but they happily do so.
quantified··on Young People Hate AI CEOs So Passionately That It's Almost Hard to Believe
Ain't going to happen and you know it.
quantified··on Inside North Korea's Operation to Conquer the American Job Market
Fyi it's a video hosted at wsj.
quantified··on Trump's 401(k) Proposal Shows Evidence of Phony Public Support
Is there a haveibeenpwned.com for fake comment attributions?
quantified··on Why must a socialist also be woke?
Without reading the article (also paywall), it's helpful to be woke because that's basically now just "caring about others in general, not just selfish" but not required. You could be a selfish racist socialist, for example socialist with respect to white straight christians but at war with muslims and gays.
quantified··on Gemini becomes Google's fastest-growing product ever as it hits 1B users
If you have entered Gemini to try to figure out how to turn it off, you're also part of the cohort. A blast of gmail messages from Google has announced how it's part of everything and given instructions on how to find out the little you can do about it. Really, nothing.
quantified··on People don't hate AI because of Zuck. They hate the version TechCrunch sells
A stopped clock is right twice a day, Zuck might be right about something for now. They didn't hate AI solely because of Zuck, they had many good reasons to regardless, and Z's embrace of its slop is a fine reason. And they have plenty of reason to loathe Zuck regardless of AI.

Maybe Zuck is right for now. But the instant he gets an advantage in rivals, he will change his tune. He's correctly on record as saying only dumbfcks trust him.

quantified··on Tech leaders say AI means less work; staff say they work up to 90 hours a week
No tech leader believes that. They would never let their own staff work less than before.
quantified··on A permanent freezing in of wealth is just one of many possible ASI scenarios
In the abstract, yes, things can be created through applying energy to matter (e.g. transforming land, timber, mortar, sand and metal into a house). Wealth via debt is the financial abstraction/technology, the things that pay the debt back involve energy or raw resource (land, water rights, mineral rights) somewhere. Bitcoin is interesting, it doesn't generate wealth. It's more a store of wealth, cash in a currency people have wanted in on. When the price goes down, it subtracts wealth. It's just an abstraction that has caught people's attention.
quantified··on [dead]
It's his ship and his responsibility, or if nothing else his choice of captain and crew. Definitely reflects on him.
quantified··on Silicon Valley misreads science fiction and undermines democracy
How do you ever choose your boss at work? Never. Oh, by quitting that job and getting another? That's called "moving" when applied to politics. Which is super unattractive in much of regular life, unless you don't need people.
quantified··on Meta CTO told employees AI gains should go into more work
Why does anyone believe more tech makes less work? It makes different work, but the 50-hour week remains. More AI will never bring less work much less "abundance".
quantified··on Kalshi and Polymarket bets on clinical trials criticized as 'ghastly'
Sorry, which objection are you referring to?
quantified··on Kalshi and Polymarket bets on clinical trials criticized as 'ghastly'
For a mutual insurance company, everyone is betting that it's going to happen somewhere sometime, that's why they pay the premiums. There is also not "winning" and "losing", there is no particular event like a known game, and you only get paid to cover a loss. You could squint and say it's taking 100:1 odds (or whatever your coverage-to-premium ratio is), but you have the incentive to play since if an event happens TO YOU, you really LOSE, and if you don't take a bet you just don't take the bet.
quantified··on Kalshi and Polymarket bets on clinical trials criticized as 'ghastly'
This is one of the huge problems with allowing betting. Of course, people could collude without the formal marketplace, but just as social media provides really painful detrimental cons along with its pros, so do betting platforms.
