qiskit··on Foster care is evolving by relying on children’s kin
> Here, there has been a greater focus on kinship care and in-home aid (i.e. not removing the kids) primarily due to a shortage of foster parents.

That's good because children probably feel more comfortable around their family rather than complete strangers. Shouldn't the system be placing kids with kin regardless of the number of available foster parents?

qiskit··on The European central bank is trapped
> Probably more desirable to live in then even california.

Southern europe isn't california. The mediterranean isn't the pacific ocean.

qiskit··on Lead poisoning probably did not cause the downfall of the Roman Empire
> But it's also a highly-expected outcome of a field being actively researched!

But that's the point. It isn't "research". It's meaningless busy work to justify a paycheck.

> It's just to say that your comment falls hideously short as a potential way of spotting bad acting, so far short that it looks intentionally misleading.

I disagree. The guy was offering his honest opinion. Your comment comes off as someone working in the industry selfishly trying to justify your existence.

qiskit··on A chat with Ray Dalio
> but I'm also watching Polymatter videos which makes me a China bear.

Shouldn't base your worldview on silly youtube videos. What are the odds that grifters peddling youtube videos are experts on china, mrbeast, ikea, india, dennis rodman, etc?

These people just make videos targeted for their group of dumb masses in order to sell ads.

Just go to their youtube page and ask yourself what are the odds that the grifters running polymatter are experts on any of the topics they pumped videos out for? The answer is none. What they do is most likely analyze what types of garbage their subs may like and create garbage for these people.

You'd think HN would be the last place anyone would take polymatters seriously. But from the comments, many actually look to youtube grifters and outright propagandists ( zeihan ) to form their opinions.

qiskit··on The Lumpy Pearls That Enchanted the Medicis (2019)
"Then again, a pearl is a kind of pathology—or at least, a reaction to one. It’s the mollusk’s defense against an invader, whether it’s a speck of grit or a parasitic fluke. The mollusk enrobes its enemy slowly in layer after layer of gleaming nacre; the pearl becomes the invader’s tomb. From the centers of pearls, scientists have exhumed tiny crabs, tapeworms, snail shells—even, sometimes, entire fish. In this way, pearls have less in common with other precious gems and more in common with pimples—or with the gnarled galls that swell from the trunks of wasp-infested oaks."

So every pearl has a little creature entombed in the center? Wow, never expected that was how pearls were formed.

qiskit··on Shortsightedness has become an epidemic
Don't care. It's a global publication. America sets the standard in english so use the standard. That goes for spelling 'favor/labor/etc' correctly.
qiskit··on Generating true random numbers from bananas
"Anyone who attempts to generate random numbers by deterministic means is, of course, living in a state of sin." -- Von Neumann

Lots of sinners in tech and academia...

qiskit··on Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab
> Australia is an Anglo nation that thinks they're us.

No. Australians think they are british.

> We're a German nation that thinks we're British.

No. We are an anglo nation. We speaking german right now? Don't think so.

> The state we occupied doesn't exist anymore unless you think we're going to re-invade Germany and Japan from our bases there.

Re-invade? For what? We already are occupying them.

Yours is the most bizarre and nonsensical comment I've read in a while.

qiskit··on The Great American Murder Ballad
> Strange anybody today would want to repeat these stories.

If this triggers you that much, then you are not going to like the iliad, bible or much of human literature/art/etc.

qiskit··on Eliminating Toil
> This is by design.

Partly due to a dominant market share. If there was more competition, they'd more about user experience.

qiskit··on Please, don't build another Large Hadron Collider
No. He was working on the photoelectric effect because "the field" already existed. And he was working on it from a classical physics standpoint. What makes quantum physics revolutionary is it's non-classical nature. That's what einstein was against - quantum physics as we know it today. Einstein was a life long classic physicist. His relativity was grounded on classical physics. It's why many are working towards a quantum theory of gravity.
qiskit··on Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab
> looks over at Ukraine

What? It's only wrong for russia to occupy a foreign nation?

> Yes, I'm sure the Germans are eager to expel American troops right now.

If the germans were smart, they'd take this as an opportunity to liberate themselves. Besides what do they care? Trading one foreign master for another.

qiskit··on Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab
> The US and Germany are allies.

An ally doesn't firebomb a nation, murder thousands of innocent people and forcibly occupy it. Germany is a vassal.

> In fact, I believe “German” is the largest ancestry group in the US.

Who cares? We are not a german nation. We are an anglo nation. Germans don't have much political power in the US. If they did, we would have been allied with germany during ww2.

qiskit··on Inbound container volumes to the US are reverting to pre-pandemic levels
They are zero risk in that they are completely within our sphere of influence. Canada and Mexico are as zero risk as you can get from an american perspective.
qiskit··on Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab
We invaded germany in 1940s and we've been occupying it ever since. You know like how the soviet union invaded germany in the 1940s. But then they eventually left. We didn't. We are still there. Hopefully germany will become a free nation one day. We talk so much freedom and sovereignty and yet we deprive so many of freedom and sovereignty.

> they are claims devoid of proof, references or even arguments.

It's basic history. Do you need references for ww2 and the occupation of germany? You are only responding like this because it's the obvious truth which you don't want to confront.

Imagine if china or russia was occupying germany and forced them to subsidize chinese or russian companies.

qiskit··on Germany paying $5.5B for Intel fab
> It's about national security. A fab is necessary for national security

How does germany funding a foreign/non-german company's fab part of national security? What about expelling a foreign occupying force? If the germans cared about national security, shouldn't they be looking in that first?

If germany was funding a german company's fab, it would be national security. What germany is doing is paying tribute to a dominating foreign empire. No different than india sending their goods to britain during the colonial period.

qiskit··on Mark Cuban is tackling out-of-control drug prices
>This keeps showing up but it's total bullshit.

Because it's probably paid advertising. Almost every article is paid advertising.

qiskit··on Please, don't build another Large Hadron Collider
> Einstein and the quantum pioneers

Einstein wasn't a 'quantum pioneer'. Einstein was a proponent of classical physics and against quantum physics.

qiskit··on Gas stoves are more hazardous than we’ve been led to believe (2020)
Makes me wonder whether these stories are paid advertising ( by electric stove companies or whomever ) or the journalist had to write something and just winged it. I'm guessing most garbage in media is paid advertising, but who knows at this point.
qiskit··on Tracing an obsession with the Shakespeare authorship question
> I think it is totally plausible that he used things from other people.

Good artists copy. Great artists steal. Shakespeare is as great an artist as you can be.

qiskit··on Twitter Blocks Linking to Mastodon.social
> Twitter is a publicly owned corporation

It's a publicly traded company. Not a publicly owned company. The owners of twitter are primarily private citizens/corporations, not public/government.

> But I'm not sure what work the word "private" is supposed to be doing.

Public = government. Private = not government.

qiskit··on New York lawmakers pass a moratorium on Bitcoin mining
Just TheVerge? Every grifting publication has proven themselves to be incompetent, agenda driven and toxic. I still can't believe theverge exists after their "how to build a pc" fiasco. But that's the world of journalism/publishing. All privilege and no accountability.
qiskit··on Could the greatest works of literature be undiscovered?
> The problem is that this is very much a rear-view mirror perspective.

But analyzing art is a rear-view mirror perspective. History judges what is great art. Not the present audience.

You ramble about the same thing over and over again - human condition. Sure. That's a part of it. Silly pop music, formulaic romance novels, etc all have that. But what separates actual great art from entertaining art is it's affect on language/culture/thought/etc.

Whether marvel movies will be considered great art has nothing to do with "human condition" or how it emotionally affected the audience today. It'll be judged in time by its affect on language/culture/thought/etc. Any silly drone can create art that touches on the human condition. That's the easy part.

Shakespeare's hamlet, romeo and juliet, etc aren't considered great art because it "moves" you.

> and great art taps into this unchanging set of idealized forms.

No. Practically every art does.

qiskit··on Mexico calls for dissolution of the Organization of the Americas
> NAFTA is a weird political thing, it has some parallels with the EU.

Nothing weird about it and it's nothing like the EU.

> Seems like everyone hates it, in a vague and confusing sort of way,

No. It's rather specific. It's shifting manufacturing to cheaper locations and costing america jobs and industry.

> Weird that it only seems popular in some places if you can wrap it up with xenophobia somehow, which then prevents you voting for the people who agree with your goals.

It's popular everywhere there are sensible people. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of sensible people and capital will always win against labor and the people.

qiskit··on Could the greatest works of literature be undiscovered?
> IME great literature has to connect at an emotional level.

No. It's has to be more than that. Otherwise, every formulaic romance novel would qualify as great literature. Great literature has to have it all, but most importantly, it has to advance language/thought/culture. It's what separates the bible, shakespeare's works, etc from dostoevksy. Dostoevksy's works are entertaining. But they certainly aren't great.

qiskit··on Jamie Dimon says ‘brace yourself’ for an economic hurricane caused by Fed
> Tax the rich the rich flee to Europe.

Good. Maybe putin will take care of them there.

> Economy 101

Economics 101. The rich disappear. Nobody will notice. The working class disappears, the economy collapses.

qiskit··on Sheryl Sandberg stepping down as Facebook COO
People on HN have been predicting facebook's demise for nearly a decade now. People on HN have been wrong. Almost any popular sentiment on HN, especially tech related, seems to be nonsense.

> The metaverse is a real idea yes - but strapping a phone to your face and walking through your coffee table isn’t it.

And the idea of people watching video on a tiny smartphone was initially thought to be absurd.

> When they first announced the rebrand I actually thought it could be genius

Did you really?

> but epic strategic miscalculation seems to be going around a lot this year.

Right. Like facebook's miscalculation in buying instagram, whatsapp, etc.

I've never used facebook. Think the world's better without facebook and most social media and large tech companies like apple, microsoft, google, etc. But man, you people have been so wrong for so long and it's hard to take the facebook haters seriously anymore. Just like the tesla haters a few years ago.

qiskit··on Grade Inflation: Over 82% of Harvard '22 Graduating With Over a 3.7 (A-) GPA
> ... then your school rarely matters.

... then your gpa rarely matters. But your school always matters. Not only in terms of network, but in terms of reputation, prestige and even camaraderie. Especially the higher you go up the ladder when more and more people tend to be graduates of top schools.

Nobody will ask about your GPA as you get further along in your career. But everyone will ask about your alma mater. You eventually stop putting your GPA on your resume, even if you had a 4.0. But you always put the college you graduated from.

qiskit··on South Korean Workers Turn the Tables on Their Bad Bosses
I guess you can cry about apple removing the flag icon? I don't know what you want. I'm just answering a question you asked.

You asked this: "Who is the ruling class in non-capitalist countries? "

I answered this: "For any country, ask yourself whose interest the government/military/media/etc exists to serve. I'll give you a hint. It's never 'the people'. In capitalist countries, it's to serve the interest of capital. In monarchies, it's to serve the interest of the monarch. In communist countries, it's the serve the interest of the party. God knows what north korea is. A communist monarchy?"

My response wasn't about capitalists or capitalism. My response was about the ruling class for any country. You are so agenda driven you only see what you want. You asked a question, I answered and you are crying about what other people wrote. Not what I wrote.
