qPM9l3XJrF··on Rustaceans at the border
Could a new kernel implement a compatibility layer of some kind for Linux drivers? Or just expose the same API?
qPM9l3XJrF··on I have a brain injury [video]
This book has been a godsend for my chronic pain problems, including, somewhat surprisingly, neurological stuff: https://www.amazon.com/Trigger-Point-Therapy-Workbook-Self-T... (I suggest looking up "whiplash" in the index.) As weird as it sounds, when I massage the muscles around my head and neck, I get noticeable cognitive changes in the minutes and days that follow.
qPM9l3XJrF··on One way a builder culture can fail
Thanks!
qPM9l3XJrF··on Essential security for Linux servers (2013)
>All of Linux security is a shit show.

What would you recommend instead?

qPM9l3XJrF··on One way a builder culture can fail
>I've told some stories about what happens when you end up at a company that builds nothing and instead rents everything from some vendor.

This sounded interesting but I searched for her blog and I couldn't find it. Does anyone know which post this refers to?

qPM9l3XJrF··on Dangerous bug in Chrome’s ‘New Tab’ page bypassed security features
>With a bit of effort, you can get a similar level of privacy to Firefox in Chrom[e/ium].

What specific effort?

qPM9l3XJrF··on The good things in the current age in tech
>Debian has been an extremely reliable distro that i've used in a number of scenarios and has largely avoided the problems that Ubuntu or even CentOS (RIP) have run into.

What problems are being referred to?

Where are they investing then?
qPM9l3XJrF··on It’s mostly a demand shock, not a supply shock, and it’s everywhere
What sort of correction?
qPM9l3XJrF··on It’s mostly a demand shock, not a supply shock, and it’s everywhere
Ray Dalio, billionaire founder of Bridgewater, has recently written a book "Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order" where he advocates systemic change, including effective government action to address inequality.
qPM9l3XJrF··on It’s mostly a demand shock, not a supply shock, and it’s everywhere
>Not really, right? They make a lot of money even after they get it wrong?

If they get it wrong clients may move their money elsewhere

qPM9l3XJrF··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community
>Just pick something already old-fashioned today but that somehow does not die.

Sounds great. Do people have recs here?

qPM9l3XJrF··on Embedded malware in RC (NPM package)
Why would malware authors target NPM in particular? Maybe they are targeting lots of package registries, and NPM is just more vigilant?
qPM9l3XJrF··on Culture shock
Of course it is better to be rich than be poor in the US. By that standard, the poor are "screwed". However, if someone got a chance to experience poverty in both the US and in India, I'll bet they would choose poverty in the US.
qPM9l3XJrF··on Culture shock
Hm, I wonder how accurate this reddit thread about third world countries is: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/imky2m/people_li...
qPM9l3XJrF··on Culture shock
There's a difference between a walkable neighborhood and cars that look out for pedestrians. There are a lot of US neighborhoods where you wouldn't particularly want to walk through them since they're suburban wastelands, but cars will respect you if you do.
qPM9l3XJrF··on Culture shock
Can you give examples of choices which in retrospect seem likely to be a result of culture shock?
qPM9l3XJrF··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)

qPM9l3XJrF··on U.S. Recession Probabilities September 2021: 44%
Assuming this blog post is correct, what would a smart response be from an investor point of view?
qPM9l3XJrF··on I Miss the Old Internet (2019)
Desire for friends & family doesn't explain the popularity of twitter, reddit, or youtube.
qPM9l3XJrF··on macOS has become more reliable
What's the best way to get this sort of secure book on linux/bsd?
qPM9l3XJrF··on macOS has become more reliable
Why is it possible to turn Sealed System Volume off? Is there a way that malware might be able to turn it off?
qPM9l3XJrF··on I Miss the Old Internet (2019)
In absolute terms, the internet has many many more people now than it did in the early days. If you want to create a small quirky community, you only need a tiny fraction of those people to sign up. So in theory the modern day could be a Cambrian explosion of tiny communities. Is this the case? If not why not? Maybe there are a lot of them hiding and they fear eternal september? I can think of a few but maybe I shouldn't be linking them...
qPM9l3XJrF··on Ada is not just another programming language (1986)
Thanks, interesting! However I can't help but notice that the in/out/inout stuff wouldn't do much for a modern dynamic language like Python or Ruby... are there features of Ada that those languages could do well to adopt?
qPM9l3XJrF··on Ada is not just another programming language (1986)
>Some of those features have been introduced only recently in more popular languages, while others are still missing from most languages.

Can you give an example of an ADA feature missing from most languages? I know ADA is supposed to be good for writing reliable software, are there any important features related to that which other languages could adopt?

qPM9l3XJrF··on What caused all the supply chain bottlenecks?
I don't know a ton about finance, but isn't "value investing" another way of describing the thing Ryan is complaining about? ("Value investing" = using metrics like P/E ratio)
qPM9l3XJrF··on What caused all the supply chain bottlenecks?
Sadly the incentives government officials face also often favor short time horizons. Therefore I favor any marginal increased investment for 100-year floods from any part of society

Yeah I think you're absolutely right that is a factor

That part was weird given that women on dating subreddits complain about how guys only want them for sex.
