pxue··on Las Vegas approves 68 miles of underground transportation tunnels
Elon's superpower is extremely on display here.

He's starting from the other way around, sell snake oil to corpos and politicians, get all the bureaucracy out of the way, and then take his sweet ass time to actually deliver.

In our current system, this is the best way. Example, in Toronto our politicians literally spent a decade and half debating, approving, then disallowing, then commissioned studies for a ~10 mile long subway line.

pxue··on Mexico seeks to solidify rank as top U.S. trade partner, push further past China
You ever heard of the opium trade force on China?

I was just looking for a tool like this over the weekend.

How is Decipad different from other cloud data visualization/analysis/science tools such as https://observablehq.com/?

pxue··on The Rise of AI Girlfriends
This is nothing new in East Asia and the society there is not infractuated with if their young men are getting laid or not. The west is just finally catching up.

pxue··on Remote Work to Wipe Out $800B from Office Values, McKinsey Says
At least here in Toronto (linked article is Bloomberg Canada), banks (minus tech department) are back to office 5 days a week. I just feel like outside of tech, wfh isn't much of a debate.
pxue··on Show HN: A non-VC backed content creation and social media platform
Read through your marketing page and the "why i built it" blog post, still unclear what exactly is the problem you're solving.
pxue··on Engineers should focus on writing
> Writing is reasonably easy and it's hard to get much better than you already are.

I can't fathom how you've arrived at this conclusion. Like everything in life, the only way you can know for certain if something is true or not is by doing it many times over and then seek feedback.

Until one writes and then shows their writing to many many readers, it is impossible to make such claim.

pxue··on Rings.social – Reddit-API compatible and Open Source content-voting platform
Reddit founders used fake accounts to fake activity at the start.
pxue··on Canada's new tech talent strategy
I recently had a random observation.

My folks own a cottage 1.5h away from smack middle of Toronto (I drive it often)

We call it a cottage because it has no running water, no broadband, overhead electricity lines that literally gets knocked out during bad storms.

All of our neighbors are in the same boat. Thousands of southern rural Ontarians live like this.

The difference is that they live this way full year round.

We are so behind as a country in infrastructure that it's not even funny.

To be developing those rural land you talk about will probably cost $100B over three decades at the rate we build things.

I'm not hopeful.

pxue··on Go 1.21 will (probably) download newer toolchains on demand by default
I'm not fully clear what you mean by don't delete lock file when the problem is the open source developer decides to unpublish their npm package
pxue··on Go 1.21 will (probably) download newer toolchains on demand by default
No it's to mitigate "leftpad" style attack vector.

I run my startup on Go and react. The ease of upgrade process can't be further apart.

We have our entire package.json locked down to the exact patch version because we've had issues where random patch upgrade kills the app, we run our own npm server because we can't trust dependency attacks in the js ecosystem. Just absolute pain.

Ten years of Go, I can count on one hand the times a dependency upgrade broke the build.

pxue··on Discord monetization: microtransaction stores and paid 'exclusive memes'
I'm so confused by the love of discord.

Maybe I'm dating myself but Can someone explain to me why it's better than traditional forum plus some VoIP like teamspeak?

pxue··on Canada's population reaches 40M
Where's your friend? $1300 cad for a 700sqft pad in Toronto is a steal!

I'm unfortunately very serious.

pxue··on Launch HN: Resend (YC W23) – Email API for developers using React
Any thoughts on third party integration such as segment?
pxue··on Apple Execs on Facebook (2011)
Allowing third party also circumnavigates Apple's approval process.

Personally I don't care about giving up choice if it means reduction of spam.

pxue··on CNN Chairman and CEO Chris Licht Is Out

pxue··on Sequoia is splitting into three VC firms
I'm sad that LATAM is still lagging in terms of VC investment. Brazil+Mexico consumers should rival SEA.
pxue··on Facebook to block news for some users in Canada
Accurately assessed.

Marketed as "protecting Canadian culture". In reality it's oligarchs lobbying to keep the status quo and their margins fat.

pxue··on Students are increasingly refusing to go to school
"Mom I'm not feeling well, can I stay home today?

Has probably been uttered by majority of school age kid once in their life.

It's not something new.

Kids are kids, they play by testing limits. How high they can jump, how fast they can run, how much lie they can get away with.

pxue··on Show HN: AI SQL Copilot LogicLoop – AI to Generate, Optimize and Debug SQL
Db schemas sometimes contain important information themselves, as well as proprietary architecture.

I see it same as slack leaking private channel names.

Unfortunately, we had a recent discussion internally amongst the execs and have decided to not allow anyone use tools like this.

There's just no way to know for sure how securely data are stored and what possible attack vectors are.

It's a great idea but imho the only path forward is allowing custom deployments against pretrained models.

pxue··on Tucker’s Message Fiasco Is the Wakeup Call You Need to Auto-Delete Your Messages
China is that way, friend.
pxue··on He wrote a book on a rare subject. Then a ChatGPT replica appeared on Amazon
Non because the topic is already covered by 1) countless blog posts 2) official documentation. Why do we now need it in a book format and waste trees is beyond me.
pxue··on Lessons from America’s astonishing economic record
I mean sure, one way is keeping yuan cheap against the usd.

But the real issue is still the commoditization of debt.
