Fine with me! I keep coming back here because the site is relatively un-cluttered. Thanks mods!
pwenzel··on I realized chess pieces can be redesigned to be geometric attack directions
Agreed. Love the concept, but the knights definitely need clarity.
pwenzel··on Linkhut: A Social Bookmarking Site
Wow, I haven't heard of Linkdup in a really long time! I used to read that every day!

pwenzel··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episodes of 2023?
I enjoyed the Heather Radke episode of the "You're Wrong About" podcast. They discuss the book "Butts: A Backstory", which I'm wrapping up here on the holiday break. Insightful stuff.

pwenzel··on Making Hard Things Easy
I see jvns.ca, I click. I am a simple person. I know that it'll probably be the best thing on HN that day.
pwenzel··on The end of tweeted articles
I've been using ReadKit for Mac for several years. It's just an old-school native feed reader app, no services required!
pwenzel··on Flash Museum
I'm going to spend the rest of my Friday watching Happy Tree Friends.
pwenzel··on The quest for a simple smartwatch
I picked up a used Fossil FTW1166 smartwatch for $45 on eBay. It features a simple analog activity tracker, with just a plain-old dial like any other watch. There is no screen and no e-ink.

The lack of screen is awesome and I can't believe there aren't more watches out there like this!

Also, after 4 months of use the battery life is still around 100%.

pwenzel··on Show HN: PFAS.report – Measure the forever chemicals in your blood via Quest
I grew up in an area of the Twin Cities metro area of Minnesota that has very high PFAS contamination from decades of 3M's dumping of chemicals. Would love to get one of these tests once available in Minnesota!

pwenzel··on macOS command-line tools you might not know about
Network Link Conditioner rules. I pair it with `mitmproxy` for debugging native apps.
pwenzel··on The Analog Thing: an open source, educational, low-cost modern analog computer
According to section 6.1 of the manual, it can be connected to an oscilloscope.

pwenzel··on Place mushrooms in sunlight to get your vitamin D (2012)
I live in Minnesota and the sun just came out in the beginning of May. I feel like I haven't felt real sun exposure since maybe October of last year. Let me tell you, I definitely take vitamin D supplements in the cold season!

As an aside, I also drink Mushroom Hero tea all winter. Love that stuff.

This is only conjecture, but could the increased legalization of cannabis in the United States lead to a change in alcohol sales?

pwenzel··on Chronophoto
This is really fun. My only wish is that I could see some information about the photos in the summary screen. Maybe a photographer credit or link to a Wikipedia?
pwenzel··on Tell HN: It is impossible to disable Google 2FA using backup codes
1Password stores QR codes and syncs them across any device that has access to your vault. I highly recommend this solution if you're worried about losing access to your 2FA codes. It is also easy to back up.
pwenzel··on Sequence8 – a music sequencing toy in PICO-8
I remember getting into the Monome ecosystem around 2005 (also a grid-based device) and being surprised by Tenori-on coming along and making something so visually similar. I guess grid-based tools feel natural to a lot of people!
pwenzel··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
I put my Aeropress coffee in a cocktail shaker, add ice, oat milk, and a tiny bit of maple syrup. Shake and pour. The result is awesome and much cheaper than the $7 iced latte you'll get at a coffee shop.

I love the Aeropress and have been rocking it since Obama's first term.

pwenzel··on Why Cassettes?
Even more so, 4-track cassette recorders exploded in price after Alessandro Cortini posted his Tascam process video a couple of years ago. The Portastudio I sold on a garage sale for $5 in 2010 goes for over $300 now!
pwenzel··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
Solo Stove bonfire pit. It burns so efficiently and is pretty much idiot proof. They work great here in Minnesota winters, and are nice when you have people over for parties and they throw crappy wood in there that would normally smoke a bunch. We've also had solo stoves out in the middle of the street for block parties. Highly recommend.

pwenzel··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
I used Dynobase for roughing out a DynamoDB project this year. It's the best and only real GUI for DynamoDB at this point. Many, many hours saved.
pwenzel··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
XDebug in PHPStorm. Can't live without it!
pwenzel··on Blender 3.4
I use Blender's Python API for transforming 3d objects to render on my analog oscilloscope.
