pweissbrod··on Lubuntu is taking a new direction
In my experience such "lightweight" distros, over time, accumulate expanded functionality/compatibility/surface area and inevitably/gradually become "heavier".

Then the community complains "X" is too heavy, we need a lightweight system! and the cycle repeats itself.

pweissbrod··on Goodreads offloads DynamoDB tables to S3 and queries them with Athena
For those of us not actually working at aws redshift gets insanely expensive when your data set grows into the terabytes. Analytics on s3 is much more cost effective using athena snowflake or old fashioned emr as yourdata grows

Hi I'd be curious to see what youve built. Can you supply links?
pweissbrod··on Goodbye Microservices: From 100s of problem children to 1 superstar
Ok so if I want to build a fledgling project all I need to do is leverage a language nobody uses yet. Lolcats ftw.

Seriously though constraining dev's to use a monolithic repository in the name of discouraging cowboys is like tying people's legs together to ensure they walk in an aligned direction. Sure it works but seriously unnecessary pain. Your company should invest in integration tests

pweissbrod··on Nissan Admits Internal Emissions-Test Results were Falsified
Nobody told me about the code of ethics I have. Can you send me a link? Is it somewhere in the windows 7 EULA I can never get myself to read those darn things :)

pweissbrod··on Exposing the secret Office 365 detailed activity logs and forensics tool
I couldn't agree more. Why is the API not public? Is it because some sort of top secret corporate conspiracy? Or is it that management just decided to avoid the burden of publishing and maintaining an immature or lesser used API? After reading your comment that whole article seemed a little sensationalist
pweissbrod··on Why nobody ever wins the car at the mall
Wow you just made me feel old :-)
pweissbrod··on Darpa Literally Reinvented the Wheel for Army Combat Vehicles
That's a good point. There's got to be a way I can replace these wheels with some sort of modern javascript framework.
pweissbrod··on Darpa Literally Reinvented the Wheel for Army Combat Vehicles
Yeah this is cool looking but isnt it just as effective and simpler to just have big knobby tires with adjustable pressure?
pweissbrod··on Darpa Literally Reinvented the Wheel for Army Combat Vehicles
Wouldnt it be a better/simpler design to just have big tires that can change pressure instead
pweissbrod··on Teens Who Hacked Microsoft's Xbox Empire and Went Too Far
Agreed except the modified devices should be restricted from joining the online community of non-modified devices
pweissbrod··on The Repeal of Net Neutrality Is Official
Doubtful. You underestimate the inertia of resources. Wages for tech are more competitive in the US. I also bet if your prediction started to become true then lobbyists would push regulations to reduce the brain drain.

That being said I'm a US citizen that thinks about moving increasingly all the time.

pweissbrod··on Chatbots were the next big thing: what happened?
I for one would LOVE to try a spoken UI for an email client. My thinking has always been that compromising sacrificing plain english with a more strict/limited set of mnemonic keywords would introduce a learning curve but with a bigger payoff in reducing confusion.

Also emails delivered from this sort of interface need some means of indication that they were a spoken format, not typed such that the reader properly understands the context.

To me, a verbal UI seems attainable by lowering the bar of what we expect from the AI. Lower the need for AI to interpret your requests from general english to limited keywords. Allow for an adjustable vocabulary for spoken word recognition to accomodate a smaller dictionary with less mistypings. Make it clear the produced content is dictated and not hand-written quality

pweissbrod··on Emirates Planes Could Be Going Windowless
if the tunnel was a tin can 3,000+ meters in the sky thats a different story
pweissbrod··on Microsoft acquires Github
As someone who also developed on windows phone I really disagree with this portrayal. Microsoft did not change the stack on account of "getting bored" with the tech.

Looking back on it, they took on an extremely difficult problem having a completely new marketplace and platform against competitors with tremendous amount of pre-existing traction.

There were clearly some pivots towards universal windows compatibility, and possibility of android compatibility as well. Nobody argues there's a ton of tactical failures and the net result was a loss, but I wouldnt conflate the mobile endeavor with something half-baked nor disregard to developers

pweissbrod··on Amazon follows Google and Apple and bans system-wide ad blockers on app store
Bans like this seems to increase the opportunity/value for "alternate" app stores outside the recommended vendor, offering things that the vendor wont.

EDIT: Point is that many apps receive a ban because they conflict with the interest of the phone vendor, but they can still be of great use to users.

pweissbrod··on John Carmack: My Steve Jobs Stories
Rapid switch between charming and aggressive. Creating an environment where you surround yourself with sycophants. Punch downwards at employees working for you to assert and maintain your power while projecting you aspire for "higher standards". Set unrealistic expectations to see which folks will work nights and weekends to your order.

^^ Managers take note. These are excellent traits to climbing the corporate ladder. Just be a dick without looking like a dick.

pweissbrod··on Full Guide to Developing REST API’s with AWS API Gateway and AWS Lambda
To me, the beautiful thing about this zappa approach is that I still follow the spec of a UWSGI-compliant app and I get the benefit of quick deployment to lambda without any form of vendor lock-in as it is also straightforward to plug the same app into, say nginx, without code change.

pweissbrod··on Taskwarrior, where have you been all my life?
Vim orgmode user here. Combining checklists with outlines with a bunch of org files in a git repo has worked well for me over the last year or so. But you know that's just for personal tracking purposes
pweissbrod··on Proton Native – React Native for the desktop
UI seems to be effectively described using some sort of a markup language. HTML being the most well-understood markup language becomes a reasonable thing for stuff outside just web pages. It isnt perfect but it gets the job done. Sorta like phonegap :/
pweissbrod··on A Lengthy, Pedantic Review of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver)
^^^ This needed to be said. I feel lucky that 95+% of everything I need can be done in terminator and/or firefox. For that time where the window manager is needed just something basic and familiar like XFCE or a plain old windows start menu. Success is measured by the quickness of getting the job done and staying out of the users way and reinventing the UI wheel repeatedly works against that
pweissbrod··on E-waste recycler loses appeal on computer restore disks, must serve prison term
I dont quite understand the basic legal details behind this.

Say I buy a computer with windows pre-installed that means the OS license cost is bundled in to the price of the machine.

Say I have a computer without windows, or maybe an older cheaper version of windows. Is it correct that these restore disks arent a utility to get a free new copy of windows?

Just trying to understand

pweissbrod··on Facebook denies it collects call and SMS data from phones without permission
More than likely youre right. Your statement brings me a curiousity:

What the legal precedence is for UX patterns considered deceptive enough to be intentionally malicious?

The best I could find was a settlement with linkedin in 2015: https://www.fastcodesign.com/3051906/after-lawsuit-settlemen...

pweissbrod··on Oni: Modern Modal Editing – Powered by Neovim
What is the sweet spot of Oni? If you're looking for a full-blown IDE with vim UI on top then the vs code IntelliJ Visual Studio does reasonably good job at that.

If you're looking for a beefed-up version of vim as an IDE spacevim has a package manager and a curated set of over 200 plugins dialed in to work well together for gvim or terminal.

I'm just trying to understand the differentiator

pweissbrod··on With SESTA/FOSTA, lawmakers failed to separate good intentions from bad law
I think your statement in the form of a question boils down to "banning high powered weapons affects less people than banning sites with personals". Perhaps youre right in that angle but you originally said "Why is the right to skeet shoot with a military weapon in the same breath as forums for free speech?" and from the standpoint of eroding citizen rights and privacy to government in the name of safety they are _absolutely_ the same.
pweissbrod··on With SESTA/FOSTA, lawmakers failed to separate good intentions from bad law
You're diminishing the gun control debate. It means more than the right to skeet shoot certain weapons.

You're inflating the FOSTA debate, it mean less than a general attack on free speech.

pweissbrod··on With SESTA/FOSTA, lawmakers failed to separate good intentions from bad law
by "preventable" I presume you mean prevented by relinquishing all citizens rights and the rights of their descendents permanently to the government.

I'm not debating gun laws, Im pointing out how readily it seems people are willing to relinquish their rights in one case vs another which have remarkably high similarities.
