pwarner··on Microsoft Azure Outage
That sounds like what I've seen on Azure. Mystery weird problems we see, but they don't. Often in the network side. One time we were pretty sure they had a bad interface in a LAG group. Massive packet loss between hosts, but only on certain ephemeral source ports, about 1/8 of them.... Support couldn't find any issues even after a few days.

This was circa 2018 but AWS was so much more stable at that time. Ok, US-E-1 AWS had issues from time to time but they acked them and fixed them

pwarner··on Amazon-Stripe partnership
I suspect the economic environment may trigger reevaluations at Amazon and many other companies. I am not sure this is a bad thing? Fewer, but better choices may be OK?
pwarner··on Amazon-Stripe partnership
I have no inside knowledge, but maybe rather than stop experimenting, they'll just declare some failures rather than keeping mediocre offerings alive. I have no first hand knowledge that Amazon payments was good or bad, but I also took note of Amazon partnering with Slack. That seemed as an ack that Chime's chat was never going to be good as Slack, might as well join them.

To me it's big step up in maturity for Amazon to find the right areas to focus on, and get the right partnerships.

pwarner··on Ask HN: Google spam filter getting worse?
Seeing the same. Someone from Google please fix this. I've gone from one spam a month to several a day. I've been using Gmail since the beta.

pwarner··on The skilled trades haven't caught as a career choice with Gen Z
I ended up paying "professionals" to install some vinyl flooring in my house. They were making like 5 of the top 10 mistakes from the YouTube video I had watched the night before. I had to correct them, which was awkward since they had been installing floors for 15 years, supposedly...

YouTube changes things for sure, although I am unsure if that's the cause of fewer folks going into the trades. Demand over all seems higher than ever in my area. Very hard to get good trades people, or even bad ones a year ago!

pwarner··on Musk’s $5.7B Mystery Gift Went to His Own Charity
You can get the same tax loophole! https://www.schwabcharitable.org/non-cash-contribution-optio...

If you have appreciated stock, transfer it into a DAF, realize a large tax deduction to offset a high income year, and take the standard deduction other years.

pwarner··on Fungible sold to Microsoft for $190M, say multiple sources
You'd have to look back, but I think AWS was ahead of many folks in doing this, but surely aren't alone. Today Intel, AMD and Nvidia all offer "DPUs" which is the generic name for what AWS Nitro does. And as others mention Azure has been doing it in FPGAs, so similar idea, just a bit slower and more expensive. AWS seems to own more of the lower levels of the stack than Microsoft. Right or wrong I can't say. If you do it better than off the shelf, and cheaper, then it's a win of course. Screw up and that's another story.
pwarner··on TSMC founder Morris Chang says globalization and free trade 'almost dead'
My bet is they shift to Mexico, at least for some products. Also, if anything is cheap to fly across the world, I'd say it's a chip?
pwarner··on Mauna Loa eruption underway; lava no longer contained to summit
Telescopes are on another mountain, Mauna Kea. Lava from Mauno Loa can't reach Mauna Kea. Ash or earthquakes I guess could be an issue.

Settlements would be at risk if lava leaves the crater.

pwarner··on Ask HN: Azure has run out of compute – anyone else affected?
Azure, despite being smaller than AWS, I think has more regions. So each one must be smaller, which likely means less spare capacity.

I also sort of suspect the spot market is less robust there. Lots of Azure is lift and shift on premises workloads, and those aren't using spot. Without people using spot, it's even harder to have spare capacity...

pwarner··on The stick shift might survive the electric revolution
I'd guess the same. People still ride horses, there will be ICE cars. I suspect the Mazda Miata or some similar roadster may by the last ice cars?
pwarner··on Silicon innovation and custom ASICs at Amazon [pdf]
I think it still comes down to proper software engineering. If you have good interfaces, abstractions, and automated tests, you can move to new systems. I've seen teams struggle to move from DB version x to x+1, taking many many months, but it's because they have no idea if it works after they upgrade. On the flip side you have people like Snowflake who are building a database that runs across multiple clouds. From the outside it appears both portable and optimized for each platform. Thoughtful software engineering, with the right abstractions and test automation are a big deal...
pwarner··on Silicon innovation and custom ASICs at Amazon [pdf]
The cloud is the new mainframe. The difference vs the old mainframe is it's so much more accessible to anyone. Barrier to entry to build one will be high, but to consume is very low. I'm trying to decide if lock in problem becomes bigger, but I think where people follow modern software engineering best practice, they can move if needed.

Yeah the foreign owned part seems like the least important part.

pwarner··on Wine 101: The Beginners Guide to Wine
It can be daunting to learn the vocabulary of any domain, wine included. It's even trickier because you are learning the words to describe flavors, and perception of flavors vary.

But there are totally resources. If you want to go in deep, I suggest https://www.thegreatcourses.com/courses/the-everyday-guide-t...

pwarner··on CA grid: real-time status
Indeed they were small, I think I was out about 3 hrs, but was close enough to coast temps were already down to 80 ish. Planned PSP outages, that's another story. I think we were dark for 4 days in fall 2019
pwarner··on CA grid: real-time status

pwarner··on CA grid: real-time status
And larger drop as they went into stage 2. It's going to go to stage 3 tomorrow if not today. What a great wave. I'm sending this from across the country now, but I lost power in 2020 last time it was almost this hot in CA.
pwarner··on CA grid: real-time status
I presume there is much higher industrial demand in Texas and that explains the large delta?

Both grids have challenges in extreme weather. In 2020 in California I lost power for about 4 hours due to too much load. I got to see the stars. In 2021 32 people died and $195B in damage was done when power went out in Texas. Extreme weather events are hard, and maybe they are more common than we think?

pwarner··on California asks people not to charge EVs during heatwave
Transition to solar is a challenge. Solvable probably, but transitions are hard. This explains it well: https://elements.visualcapitalist.com/the-solar-power-duck-c...
pwarner··on California asks people not to charge EVs during heatwave
Between 4 PM and 9 PM. Everyone charges at night anyways I think? Even without an elictricity shortage, it's expensive between 4 and 9..
pwarner··on Dodge will discontinue its Challenger and Charger muscle cars next year
People still ride horses. We should bet on what will be the last production stick shift, the last production ICE only cars....

Mazda Miata is my crazy bet for both, but what do I know.
