purpleblue··on Kafka vs. Redpanda performance – do the claims add up?
TLDR: "I work at Confluent, the owners of Kafka, and I have determined through my tests that Redpanda's performance is greatly exaggerated."

I don't think we can get a less reliable or trustworthy set of performance tests than when someone's paycheck depends on the outcome of those tests. If Redpanda's performance were found to be better, would he really publish the test results?

purpleblue··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
Open source will never defeat a company in areas where the work is very, very boring and you have to pay someone to do the grunt work. The last 20% of most tasks are extremely boring so things like data quality can only be accomplished through paid labor.
purpleblue··on Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says
Siri is mostly useless. It works about half the time for me. When I ask it to do a task like create a timer, it works, but asking it questions is almost useless. One time I asked "What is a picometer?" and it gave an answer from Wikipedia, but then I immediately asked "What is a femtometer?" and it said it couldn't answer it on the iPhone. My wife gets amused whenever I use Siri because half the time I'll start swearing in frustration at how stupid it is, and yet like Charlie Brown and Lucy, I keep trying to kick that football.
purpleblue··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
I wrote a program in C++ to download massive amounts of stock data from a data provider. The binary itself is 2 MB, memory use rises to over 16 GB and it frees everything at the end, so there are no memory leaks (I'm particularly proud of that). Over the years I've found better and better ways of making it run faster because a daily run will take over 6 hours of downloading and writing to my database.

I also wrote a multi-threaded backtester in C++ because the program I was using was only single-threaded. I stopped using that several years ago but the act of writing it was a lot of fun.

purpleblue··on Schools are ditching homework, deadlines in favor of ‘equitable grading’
All these "efforts" are simply going to make the gap between rich and poor much wider. The richer kids will go to private school that won't have these backwards policies, and the poor people will go to public school and graduate uneducated. This is the result of dogmatic, racist far-left policies that don't actually care about the children but want to push an agenda with fake accomplishments like "all these kids graduated!" when in fact they graduate uneducated.
purpleblue··on Supreme Court will decide if all home equity may be forfeited for unpaid taxes
She abandoned the property, didn't live in it, and didn't pay taxes for years. That said it doesn't give the government the right to take all of the excess profits from selling the house.
purpleblue··on How To Get Started In Soldering
I didn't know Australians use "cheque" as well, I thought that was a French term!
purpleblue··on Dashcam footage shows driverless cars clogging San Francisco
> 1. Cars will still be searching for parking: many people will prefer to have their car nearby.

You're not thinking with an open mind.

If I own a robot car and I know I'm going to be at dinner for 2 hours, I will send the robot car to do a few Uber rides while I'm eating. Or it will go and charge. It doesn't have to just drive around in circles like a human. It can coordinate will all the other robot cars in the area and pick a place where it won't create traffic, or they can distribute traffic among each other. Maybe it can park-share, where if there are 3 cars and 2 parking spots, the 3 cars can coordinate and rotate who goes driving around.

Maybe robot cars will be fungible, so you don't own a specific robot car, but you own a time share, so all the cars are basically like Ubers, and you can call the one closest to you.

The possibilities are endless, don't think that a robot car will just emulate a human.

purpleblue··on How To Get Started In Soldering
You're Canadian. I'm surprised you didn't write cheques for rent, like I did when I lived in Canada.
purpleblue··on How To Get Started In Soldering
I'm Gen X and the only way I knew how to drive a manual was because of video games.
purpleblue··on Apple’s plunge in PC shipments is steepest among major computer makers
I have a 2019 Macbook Pro I almost upgraded a few months ago... and then decided not to and stick with my Windows desktop and my Macbook from work. There's no real need at this point, I'll just keep waiting until something drastic happens like my laptop dies because my kids spill their drink all over it.
purpleblue··on Yann LeCun and Andrew Ng: Why the 6-Month AI Pause Is a Bad Idea [video]
6 month AI pause is the most absurd, self-serving thing I've heard in my history in tech.
purpleblue··on Where have all the laid-off tech workers gone?
> We actually tracked every laid off individual from Google to understand the story behind the layoffs.

This is an extremely inaccurate statement and really makes me question the validity of your research. And after I read it, there's so many problems that I think nothing conclusive can be drawn at all from it.

purpleblue··on US banks have $620B of unrealized losses on their books
This is not true at all. The people most affected by high inflation are the lower-income people, who don't have flexibility. It's not always easy to just "find a new job". And salaries rarely are commensurate with inflation. Food inflation in the UK hit 18%, since when did low-income salaries go up that much? Spoiler alert: it doesn't and just leaves lower-income people in a deep hole.
purpleblue··on Rotten meat may have been a staple of Stone Age diets
Blecch! Rotten food! The world spins and goes dark.
purpleblue··on [dead]
They did it the wrong way. They should have made the complaint seem very honest instead of an attack, and it would have made it much harder for the school district to say anything. Now they can just brush it off as a troll attempt.
purpleblue··on Home Prices Fell in February for First Time in 11 Years
The job market is still historically EXTREMELY strong. We would need unemployment to hit over 5-6% before mortgages became an issue.
purpleblue··on Home Prices Fell in February for First Time in 11 Years
San Francisco condos are down a lot, many going for less than $1000/sqft now. But that's also the political climate and the increase in crime that is contributing to all that. I might come in when condo prices fall to about $600/sqft.
purpleblue··on Home Prices Fell in February for First Time in 11 Years
What all of you are not understanding is that if house prices drop, large property hedge funds will swoop in and buy them. They can't let the rest of their portfolio plummet, so they are going to keep buying to prop up prices. So it might drop a little, but heavily invested ares of the country like Sacramento, Phoenix, etc will not fall too much.
purpleblue··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
The only way things are okay is if FDIC makes SVB whole on all its assets, which doesn't make sense. They are only on the hook for the 250k, everything above and beyond will get paid out by selling assets, much of which might be considerably impaired, because of accounting differences. You're telling me that if SVC had $1 billion in 0.1% 10 year bonds, they would pay them face value for that now? That's not how it works at all.

SVB was the 15th largest bank in the US. That's not a small bank.

purpleblue··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
No, I think you're wrong.

The reason why depositors are going to lose money I think is because the fire-sale valuation of the assets << valuation on the books. I think depositors will lose a fairly big chunk of their money, maybe 10-30% if not more.

Their money was not sitting around in cash. It was in bonds which lost a lot of value in the last several months. They also have more exotic investments in the startups they work with, which depending on how it works, could get a really bad valuation as well.

purpleblue··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
This is how quickly a bank run can happen. They announced they were seeking funding, people started withdrawing all their money, and the investors all pulled out, leaving SVB high and dry. Now it's dead.
purpleblue··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
The fact that no other bank stepped in to buy the assets makes it seem like this is going to be dire for depositors. There's something wrong in the books, or the liabilities are higher than the assets, both of which means that depositors are going to lose some money.

I have a friend that uses SVB for his startup and now all his funds are frozen. The big question is how long will the money be locked up for? Could it be 6+ months?

purpleblue··on You cannot have exactly-once delivery (2015)
It's not "equal".

If you guarantee "exactly once", you design your systems differently than "at least one with idempotence". A system designed for exactly once will be less complicated than a system designed for at least once + idempotence, which is why it is ideal but impossible.

purpleblue··on Tell HN: You now need a Samsung account to use streaming services on a SamsungTV
Why would you use the built-in apps? Samsung is notorious for how much tracking data they collect. I would rather just use an Apple TV or Roku and leave it at that.
purpleblue··on Airbnb nightly rates shot up 36% in 3 years
Many Airbnbs don't let you do more than 30 days. In places like California, staying someone for over 30 days automatically turns you into a tenant, with tenant rights. There was a case where someone stayed in an Airbnb for over 30 days, became a tenant unbeknownst to the host, and then proceeded to squat there for months while the host had to go through the eviction process. It was a nightmare.
purpleblue··on Airbnb nightly rates shot up 36% in 3 years
A small section may violently hate them (i've stopped using Airbnb as well) but the fact they are making increasing revenues is a sign that it's not working. I would love to know why some people aren't price sensitive.
purpleblue··on Airbnb nightly rates shot up 36% in 3 years
I stopped using Airbnb and went back to hotels. It's gotten too expensive with draconian rules, it's just not worth it. And at hotels, they clean your room once a day, there's no value in Airbnb anymore.

But I do find it interesting that even in the face of rapidly rising price increases, companies like Airbnb and Uber are very profitable and it hasn't hit them at all. I wonder what this phenomenon is, if it's just acceptance of higher prices or a convenience factor.

purpleblue··on WHO abandons plans for second phase of COVID-origins investigation
The WHO has shown itself to be completely and absolutely useless. It was wrong at the beginning and continuously was behind the curve. It was as if they wanted COVID to spread as quickly as possible. I think that it should be shut down at this point, there's nothing they can say that can ever regain their trust.
