purple_ducks··on You don’t have to be “pro-nuclear” or “anti-nuclear.”
They don't have to answer to their citizens if things go awry.

Plenty of opportunity for cost cutting.

purple_ducks··on No-deal Brexit opponents defeat government
> People don't understand any more about the deal (or lack of one) than they did before they voted.

They now know the realities of a no-deal and the implications it will have.

That's a lot more than they knew before the vote.

purple_ducks··on No-deal Brexit opponents defeat government
> And the EU has plenty of previous on this.

The EU didn't have anything to do with the calling of referendum.

The voices calling for a 2nd vote are inside the UK.

>the facts on the ground have changed,

The facts haven't changed, they've just been established for the first time - big difference.

purple_ducks··on Mozilla’s Manifest v3 FAQ
Maybe make this step after discussing & listening to the other browser makers who support extensions.

Maybe listen to the people who actually write the ad blockers.

>"I think they've been trying to give the impression that they’re working with the developer community, when in fact they’re pretty entrenched in what they want to do," says Jeremy Tillman, president of the privacy and security-focused ad blocker Ghostery."

purple_ducks··on Mozilla’s Manifest v3 FAQ
Chrome's June 2019 statement about Manifest v3 in which they tell us all how much they really care about users and this totes isn't to weaken ad blocking(which directly affects their revenue - that's just a coincidence - pinky promise!):

purple_ducks··on Why the Amazon Basics Keyboard Is My Favorite Keyboard
What weirds me out more is seeing the phrase "Amazon Basics keyboard ".

You've established the article is just about the Amazon Basics keyboard; just refer to it as the keyboard for the rest of the story.

Way too clickbaity/SEO method of writing it.

purple_ducks··on Firefox 69.0 Released
> For our users on Windows 10, you’ll see performance and UI improvements:

> For our existing Windows 10 users, you can easily find and launch Firefox from a shortcut on the Win10 taskbar.

???

As opposed to before?!

purple_ducks··on Fraudsters Used AI to Mimic CEO’s Voice
No?

The Turing test is "determining whether or not a computer is capable of thinking like a human being"

Not whether it can mimic the voice and speech patterns of one.

purple_ducks··on I’m sick of Chrome eating all my RAM – it's time for me to ditch it for Firefox
Author's using Windows..

Latest FF on Windows seems to have issues with rendering.

Loading up posts on old.reddit.com leads to the DOM glitching after a few seconds and elements disappearing.

Happens frequently on pages with lots of comments. Something glitchy going on.

purple_ducks··on Activists release code to generate free public transportation tickets in U.K
> a fixed price gates the poor the most

The poor already get free travel. As do pensioners.

purple_ducks··on Activists release code to generate free public transportation tickets in U.K
So bad behaviour goes unpunished due to economic upside?

Not something I'd want.

What do they do when there's an increase in bad behaviour which was previously addressed by fines?

purple_ducks··on The “mail is hard” myth
> I do encourage you to try find such a source. The difference in taste is well worth it.

I'm in Europe.

> the pasteurization process reduces the nutritional quality of milk

It doesn't reduce the nutritional quality substantially though does it?

Europe Food Safety Authority advises to not drink raw unpasteurised milk due to potential health risks (http://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajournal/pub/3940.htm) echoing what many national countries have advised "at a minimum, boil the milk before drinking it to kill potentially harmful bacteria"

Any perceived nutritional gain is marginal and is far outweighed by risk of illness.

purple_ducks··on The “mail is hard” myth
> producing your own milk is healthier

How's that?

purple_ducks··on Our team's troubles writing automated UI tests
Pretty much nothing about devops is testable.

Development for devops is based on write code, run it ,see if it works, move on.

purple_ducks··on Rich Families Are Legally Separating from Their Kids to Pay Less for College

Your present situation is not a guarantee of future income levels.

purple_ducks··on Ask HN: Do senior engineers have a mental model before coding?
Wow slam dunk.

You really defeated my actual experience and proved your point on this one /s

purple_ducks··on Ask HN: Do senior engineers have a mental model before coding?
That's blatantly not true.

I use TDD to pick apart the problem bit by bit implementing the next (then unknown) step in a very piece meal fashion.

edit: also, what kind of gatekeeping is

"You can only solve a problem with TDD well if you know EXACTLY what do you want to implement".

The end result is the same: a set of covering tests & working code.

purple_ducks··on Ask HN: Do senior engineers have a mental model before coding?
Sometimes yes.

Sometimes no. That's when I do TDD.

purple_ducks··on My Time at Google and After
> Are we adults or are we children?

After reading your comment, I'm beginning to wonder.

purple_ducks··on My Time at Google and After
> instead of outright banning them

Come work with us but if you fancy someone then prepare to upend your work just to see if that relationship is worth pursuing.

I don't think I want any company to dictate what way my love life unfolds.

purple_ducks··on Lessons from Stripe
Not directed at author but I looked at his bio after reading the article. He spent his time mostly as an engineering manager and yet in his bio has:

"I led engineering teams at Stripe"

Do managers in software companies actually think they lead teams? I've seen or heard "led engineering" or variants so much from mid level management that I wonder if my perspective is skewed.

Seems crazy to me.

purple_ducks··on Why Clojure?
> How do you manage errors?

It becomes unwieldy like every other language.

> What happens if Questionnaire.xlsx or Sheet1 doesn't exist ?

Runtime exception.

I've seen too much Clojure code (and this goes for every language where error handling is optional - Hi Javascript!) just skip error handling and focus on "happy path".

And as demonised as Java's checked exceptions are, they at least forced error handling to be thought of.

purple_ducks··on Tesla gets stolen with keyfob hack on camera in seconds
> Or just a cryptographic challenge/response

This was a relay attack. Not a re_p_lay attack.

It's just amplifying the signal from the outside car to the inside keys & vice versa.

purple_ducks··on Ask HN: Why are all posts about David Koch's death being flagged on HN?
I think you underestimate how much libertarian kool aid has been consumed by the HN community.
purple_ducks··on Deconstructing Google’s excuses on tracking protection
If these things were declared in just css and not JS accessible, things would be better, as they were before.

JS has got too much access to too much information.

All styling declared and don't let JS interrogate style info from the DOM

purple_ducks··on 2 Condos Were Illegally Converted into 18 Micro Apartments in NYC
That doesn't work when there's no other viable options. So then there's just a race to the bottom.

Why can't we as a society dictate that there will be minimum standards that have to be met?

purple_ducks··on Google Plans to Deprecate FTP URL Support in Chrome
> They wouldn't be using FTP is they care about security.

????

Using FTP doesn't put your computer at increased risk of being hacked.

Not updating your browser _DOES_ put your computer at increased risk of being hacked.

purple_ducks··on Silicon Valley Looks North as Tech Giants Expand in Toronto
> pretty much no tech other than Spotify,

> any promising upstarts are getting preemptively destroyed by EU and local governments.

What kind of silliness is this comment?

purple_ducks··on Google Plans to Deprecate FTP URL Support in Chrome
> They can also just not upgrade their browser, then

This is a very silly response.

New versions are released with security fixes, not just new features.

purple_ducks··on I feel like im talking to the borg
Quoting one of the ambassadors:

> Sure some dont like it here, but they may just dont like to work.

Ignoring the grammar..

How stupid or naive do you have to be to a) believe that and b) repeat it.

A not so subtle attempt at saying anyone who has a problem here is actually themselves the problem.
