pullo··on Why it's OK to leave a tech job at 5 p.m.
I understand your statements as coming from someone who is looking for an opportunity and frustrated now. Wait until you get a job( which you will) and 'settle'. If you are already employed or , looking for fulfillment outside your 'day job', this thread might be more relatable to you.
pullo··on Ask HN: Can you get a faster traction with a mobile app vs. WebApp
Mobile apps are a sequestered experience. It is easier to maintain a users attention inside your app. Many apps now, also include access to their settings and preferences inside their app to prevent users from 'thinking outside their app'. web apps leave you with the same feeling you get when paying attention to something and have HN and twitter on the monitor. there is also the matter of your app's identity. Unless you are using sencha or a similar tool, i think it is easier to convey the purpose of your a software much easier if it is an app.
pullo··on This American Life Retracting "Mr. Daisey & The Apple Factory"
the need to improve working conditions in third world factories is real. Mr.Daisy in his 'passion' to be broadcast and the rare sloppy work by TAL will cast a shadow on future investigative reports of this kind. Apple did release the list of its suppliers after the TAL story. i hope they keep up their drive to be more transparent irrespective of this blotch by TAL.
pullo··on When It Comes To Shopping, Mobile Web Trumps Apps
Amazons mobile website does not have a 'splash' message asking users to download their app. This could be one reason , why their mobile web sales is higher than app sales. it will be interesting to see loyalty of customers who use apps vs the mobile web.
pullo··on Indian Government uses special powers to slash cancer drug price by 97%
May be the real solution is a combination of tiered pricing and cut of all sales revenues by generics. The cost of this decision for Bayer is yet to be seen. Considering the number of users is only a few hundred at the current price point, Bayer should be ok. But, it will be interesting to see a breakdown of r&d costs of bayer in total. Considering India is one of the most popular destinations for clinical trials by drug firms, I cant shrug off a karma play here. http://www.scidev.net/en/health/clinical-ethics/news/fines-e...
pullo··on Yahoo Crosses The Line
same sentiment here. I've been using y! mail for a decade. Y! 'wall streetish' behavior is a good incentive to sever all ties. I am also certain , lot of their portal traffic comes when users are redirected to the portal home page when users sign off their ymail accnts.
pullo··on Nobody Wants to Learn How to Program
I agree. 'sink or swim' has been the technique of preference in academics for many years. I would think it it is the same for any discipline (electronics or chemical engineer). may be the fluid abstractions used in learning software make it much harder to train people?
pullo··on Sad, Tired, and Alone: My Ongoing Battle With Startup Depression
"A threatened person lives in a threatening world. A scared person lives in a scary world. An untrustworthy person lives in an untrusting world. A trusting person lives in a trusting world."

plenty of gems in there, but this one takes the cake. I've been trying to verbalize this exact thought for a while. tnx.

pullo··on Reading for the Rushed
my experience with audio books have not been enjoyable. My speed of reading is much faster the narrator's which leaves me a little impatient. and books of depth require your complete attention, in which case it easier to sit down and focus on them ( so no parallel house work..)
pullo··on Why I Don't Do Unpaid Overtime and Neither Should You
first world problems
pullo··on Steve Jobs personally asked Eric Schmidt to stop poaching employees
you are assuming that Sergei and Larry were not aware of this pact. if the firm's VP is aware of this pact and fired an employee over this, i would say Sergei amd Larry are guilty as well. eithet of collusion or gross neglect.
pullo··on Steve Jobs personally asked Eric Schmidt to stop poaching employees
there is a good article by Ben Horowitz to this point. http://bhorowitz.com/2011/02/23/is-it-ok-to-hire-people-from...

what happened here is much bigger than a deal that goes between two friends who run a startup. it by all means seems like collusion by the overlords to ensure the minions are kept where they are to 'serve' them ( a minor exaggeration). Parts of this story is revolting, like firing and making an example of the recruiter who poached a google employee. This sickens me and is surprising , probably cause, I am not cynical enough..

pullo··on I'll tell you why movie revenue is dropping...
your logic is flawed. there are plenty of activities that can make you unreachable. one example pops up ..if you are a hiker, professional or for leisure , you know you will hit spots that have no cell phone coverage.
pullo··on China to cancel college majors that don't pay
sadly enough the emphasis on education (a good thing) in asian countries (china and india especially) is a driver for diploma greed. there are plenty of institutions , hand in hand with the govt administrators, which set up shop with little or no infrastructure. the stigma associated with someone who does not have a college degree is high and you can forget about a job as a high school grad when a college grad shows up to do the same work. too many students, too few good institutions and corrupt officials result in phantom diploma's. hence many times , the real education starts at the workplace. if the original article is correct, then it would seem they are just shifting unemployment from one kind of majors to another, cause there was no mention of employement shortage in other majors.
pullo··on 68% of the Sons of the 1% Work at Their Dad's Company
I apologize for any perceived distortion, I just copied the article's original title.
pullo··on Rent a Mac in the cloud for development
The customer base seems to be people who do not own a mac , but would like to spend some time on one. this is truly a fleeting and shrinking population. Think about this...on a macro scale, if mac's marketshare goes up, your user base goes down. if the share goes down, then your service is irrelevant. there are plenty of virtualization/remote solutions out there. some as a resource addendum ( aws) and some for variable platforms ( deviceanywhere-for phones). aws - cause an individual developer cannot own such resources ;deviceanywhere-cause the phones and their os platforms change at a rapid pace. where does your service fit in this landscape? i can see your product being used by offshore dev teams , but still paid for by US companies. that again is an even smaller market.
pullo··on Jeff Atwood On Parenthood
agree with bodegajed. I like jeff, but this article falls mostly outside core interest of HN.
pullo··on Tim O'Reilly: The heart of what is best in capitalism
there are few experts if any on what is moral profit (is a doctor making money of sick people moral? ). look around you. everything you see and use is obtained from earth. there is a cost to mining earth this way and it is not reserved to rich countries.e.g ghost towns in US caused by fracking. beyond this , your statement is too generic to even repudiate.
pullo··on Steve Jobs has passed away.
Steve and his team have changed the way we live. Making us all introspect on our lives work..is probably his second monumental contribution...
pullo··on Steve Jobs has passed away.
terribly sad news! what wonders he could have created if had lived for another decade..I am grateful to you Steve.
pullo··on Marc Andreessen: The "Clock Is Ticking" On Oracle
cloud computing companies like amazon use oracle in their backend. http://www.itinfomag.com/cloud-computing/amazon-rds-will-inc... Andreessen is in the the board of HP , which is positioning itself to become a competitor to oracle.I would take his comments with a grain of salt.
pullo··on Yahoo blocked emails about Wall Street protest
I will not be surprised if this is by oversight. I am regular yahoo mail user and their spam filters suck. I frequently need to look into the trash and spam folders to check for wrongly filtered emails.
pullo··on Why I will never pursue cheating again
one of the real problems in current testing is that it requires very little of the students creativity or originality. right from school you are told there is one answer to a question and one explanation that is better than others. your job as a student ( you are told) is to know that answer or to remember/understand that explanation. how different do you think students answers will be from each other?

Asking students not to open a browser to hunt for information is akin to not opening text books. not going to happen. when you are asking for an proven explanation the best you can expect is modified regurgitation of a know existing explanation. there are times when this is not as straightforward as it seems and there is effort required to do so.

the person really getting the short straw is the student. after paying a hundred grand, to sit in a class, they spend time understanding others opinions, instead of coming up with an original/fresh understanding of the problem.

'studying' or working on problems as a group is not going to go away. working as a group is the best way to stay motivated and focused when you are have 20 + course credits a semester. the best classes i have been in are those where the instructor divides the class into work groups and them adjusts the score by the individual members scores based on their contribution to a group ( much more real word scenario)

the authors efforts to creatively test the students and his success in dong so underscores my point. the system has the wrong incentives. more so for the students by not testing for their ability ,creativity, skills and understanding.

i really do feel for the author. i feel his pain and dissapointment and i hope things get better for him and his class. there are more uncaring/misguided teachers than bad/hopeless students.and i hope this teacher does not turn that dark corner. and we all know , there needs to be just one great teacher to set a student in the right path. good luck .

pullo··on Ask HN: What's Java used for?
there are more java and .net programmers out there than python/ruby programmers. hence a java programmer is easy to find, cheaper to hire and less disruptive to fire. This is probably one of the most important reasons why corporations prefer java/.net over ruby on rails/python. that said, when a programming language is around for more than a dozen years, it gains the tag of being reliable ( rightfully so).
