Visually explaining abstract concepts works a lot better in building an intuition than explaining them in abstract terms in my experience.
I've now got the basics down, and just added EthicalAds, which should get me past break even. Everything is open:
- Status: https://status.nslookup.io/
- Stats: https://plausible.io/nslookup.io
- Roadmap: https://trello.com/b/CxCYyU2V/nslookupio-product-roadmap
Up next:
- A dedicated page for reverse DNS lookup queries
- Parsing SPF, DMARC and DKIM records
The main functionality is now pretty much complete, but is in dire need of a visual redesign. It also lacks parsing of many record types and email configuration in TXT records. Additional landing pages for specific DNS record types are also still to come.
The complexity so far has mainly been polishing usability (autocomplete, responsive design, parsing DNS records, adding ip info, etc).
Only a couple went live but didn't get traction: - A site for ip geolocation lookup - A curated index of conference talks and meetups
Last year I decided that I'd do much more market research before writing any code, and that I'd see it through all the way. So I'm working on https://www.nslookup.io for about half a year now, which isn't profitable yet (€50 monthly cost). I'm still confident I can get it profitable. There's enough search traffic, other tools have horrible UX, and I've committed to spending time on it at least weekly next year.
However, at some point I'd like to monetize this site. I know there's https://www.ethicalads.io/, but they've limited their target audience to developers. Are there any privacy focused ad networks?
Since Corona hit, I found myself with some extra free time, so I decided to start a new side project. I’ve been building, and recently launched, an online DNS client. There are many similar sites already, but I found most to be clunky and not user friendly at best. My design goal for nslookup.io is for it to be simple yet powerful.
Features
- All DNS types
- Authoritative queries, popular DNS caches (8.8.8.8 et. al.), and local DNS servers
- Autocomplete for the 1 million most popular domain names using Tranco [1]
- Browser plugins for all major browsers (except Safari) [2][3][4]
- Parsed and formatted output, or raw DNS responses
- Punycode [5] support
Tech
At the moment, I'm using Scala, ZIO, http4s, Vue with plain js, Docker, docker-compose, Vultr, CloudFlare, Gitlab CI, StatusCake and Humio and a couple of small open source projects. I think I’ll refactor the front-end to use webpack and typescript, but plain javascript got me started faster.
Ask me anything :)
