puchatek··on The Best Way to Hug Someone, According to Science
What brings you to HN? Are you interested in software as a hobby it from a previous career?
puchatek··on Proof of stake is incapable of producing a consensus
Some mining is powered sustainably. And for some of THAT power it is true that it wouldn't be used for residential anyway. But for the majority of BTC's power needs the sources are not renewable.

So there's a simple question: how much value do we get out of this tech per CO2e it emits and per ton of e-waste it creates. And AFAICT the answer is: not enough to keep tolerating it in a time where humanity as a whole is seriously worried about climate change for the first time ever.

If you can magically move _all_ the miners to sites with excess renewable electricity and permanently slash the hash rate by 99.9% then maybe it can be tolerated. Until then I would welcome more China-style crackdowns on mining activity across the world.

puchatek··on Proof of stake is incapable of producing a consensus
It seems the author is confused about the meaning of the word "scam". PoS might not be as secure as PoW but that does not make the concept some sort of fraud.
puchatek··on Low interest rates in advanced countries have pushed money into real estate
The point here was that the value is not so important when you're not looking at your home as an investment. This is a very real argument. A house has many functions to the owner who actually lives in it vs am investor. Ofc you might want to sell at dinner point and then the value matters but it's not unreasonable to picture a hike owner who will never sell for as long as they live
puchatek··on Greening of the Earth Mitigates Surface Warming (2020)
Getting your groceries delivered is quite normal here in NL. We like to order larger quantities of things in cans or dry stuff like legumes delivered, then still go to the neighborhood supermarket for fresh produce, either on foot or by bike. I never owned a car and always saw it as a tremendous waste of money. But it can be handy sometimes and in such occasions i use car sharing services which have a similar level it convenience: i can reach 2 cars on foot and two more by bike within 5-7 minutes and while i need to reserve upfront, 99% of the time i decide i need one there will be one available. Worst case is i have to ride my bike a little further.
puchatek··on Is nuclear power our best bet against climate change?
... on a sunny and windy Sunday. But still...
puchatek··on Show HN: 40k HN comments mentioning books, extracted using deep learning
In that case I shall take issue with _your_ use of the word "extreme" (even though I ultimately cannot verify the level of issue you took)
puchatek··on The Big Escape: How the Ultra-Wealthy Avoid Paying Taxes and How to Fix It [pdf]
I think you forgot the sarcasm sign
puchatek··on The Big Escape: How the Ultra-Wealthy Avoid Paying Taxes and How to Fix It [pdf]
Germany suspended it's wealth tax and some parties are now contemplating whether to reactivate it. Might be just pre-election noise but who knows
puchatek··on The Dresden Job
Except in this particular case several people picked up on the sarcasm without the /s. I would say "omit at your own risk".
puchatek··on Show HN: With a 9-5 job and 2 kids I have finally finished my first MVP
This has anecdotally been described as US work ethic to me. Ostensibly long hours and few vacation days but if you need to run an important errand on company time nobody will bat an eye.
puchatek··on Yt-dlp – A YouTube-dl fork with additional features and fixes
You conveniently skipped the rest of his comment which was really the important part...

There is no need to state the obvious. Nobody would miss any kind of advertisement in the media they consume but that doesn't answer how content creators are supposed to be compensated for the effort they put in.

puchatek··on Overthinking
As a dev who was forced to learn functional programming i very much approve of #3.

puchatek··on Cuba’s Bitcoin Revolution
Good to know, thanks.
puchatek··on The Myths of the Digital Native (2015)
I know this one! The answer is: stackoverflow
puchatek··on GitHub’s engineering team has moved to Codespaces
If i sum all the instances of Ubuntu but doing what i wanted it to do and compare that to the dystopia that windows theoretically exposes me to I'm not sure what's better tbh. But if you want to play modern games on your PC then the choice of OS has been made for you.
puchatek··on Poly Network hacker returns $258M after stealing $600M
So this is like the ETH DAO thing except the "attacker" messed up?
puchatek··on Actual impostors don't get impostor syndrome
Ah yes, keep it all bottled up and under no circumstances talk about it. Totally leads to improved quality of life.
puchatek··on The CIA’s outsourced torture is lost to history
I keep hearing that torture doesn't provide reliable information. And then i read that an organization that specializes in obtaining information uses torture extensively.

Either nobody holds them accountable for when their dodgy intel doesn't check out or i have been misled and torture does in fact yield good results. Which one is it?

puchatek··on Mozilla Common Voice Adds 16 New Languages and 4,600 New Hours of Speech
Autonomous territory, not a country.
puchatek··on Grand jury indicts Trevor Milton, Nikola founder, on three counts of fraud
> So both Elon Musk or Trevor Milton are not billionaires? So I am not allowed to say they are billionaires? What wrong with that? It is a fact, not 'some political element'.

You're telling others to stay on point yet your pointing out that Musk and Milton are billionaires is just as much beside the point.

puchatek··on Video game developers at Activision Blizzard say they'll walk out Wednesday
This should be a "challenge" (if those are still a thing), to be performed by anybody who believes that the issue doesn't exist. Create a female account for some online game and see how much fun you will be allowed to have with it.
puchatek··on US set for punishing temperatures as ‘heat dome’ to settle over country
If the US and Canada managed to cut down on their dramatic per capita emission levels then this could serve as an example to others and give some weight to otherwise empty pleas for change. It would also help accelerate green tech to a point where it can compete with fossil fuels on price line it's happening with solar. Others will follow suit naturally at that point
puchatek··on US set for punishing temperatures as ‘heat dome’ to settle over country
I think you guys need a "War on CO2" if you want to mobilize the masses. Unlike the other wars, this one could actually be won...
puchatek··on TFTC (TIE Fighter Total Conversion) v1.0
I was in the inner circle, had the tattoos and everything. I had real power back then.
puchatek··on My take on the study from MIT that predicts “societal collapse”
It takes a while to plan and execute something like 9/11. This is not one guy with an IED in Kabul. The pilots got their licences for that specific purpose. That alone takes months.

Bush became president in January 2001. You think Al Qaeda was like "oh no, Gore lost? Let's proceed with that airplane plan" right there and then? Like they even remotely care if it's a dem or Rep.

puchatek··on Instagram Has Become SkyMall
The one SkyMall i remember from a US flight ages ago was one for shoes with springs built into the heels which claimed they would make you walk faster. Deciding whether the whole magazine was a witty caricature of US capitalism or honest advertising took me a while. I then decided to keep the magazine as a souvenir but have unfortunately lost it since.
puchatek··on 'Superager' brains resist the march of time to have memories like 25-year-olds
I was afraid it was gonna be stuff like that. High stress levels are bad for forming memories.
puchatek··on Hydrogen fuel cell cars (2020)
I know this article is from bmw but afaik people are interested in hydrogen for other types of vehicles than cars. Ships, for instance. Forklifts. Trains.

Planes will never work well due to hydrogens low energy-to-volume ratio, unfortunately.
