ptr_void··on Business networking for nerds (2017)
Everything about networking is shady and discriminatory. Networking should be made illegal.
ptr_void··on We still don’t understand motion sickness
I do this as well and it doesn't always work like you described. Unexpected breaks are the worst. I also feel less sick if I am sitting/standing sideways to the direction of motion. Somehow I don't feel motion-sickness at all on water, air or trains, but just on road.
ptr_void··on Changing Our Approach to Anti-Tracking
What about no default ? Just Prompt user after installation which search engine they want to set as default.

HN users will switch to something they prefer, normal users wouldn't know there exists anything other than google. By making what you think majority wants as default, you are forcing something on people who doesn't know any better.

See also about:telemetry to see if anything enabled. If enabled, they are sending a bunch of information with unique id. Even if disabled, the telemetry is still always being gathered, just not sent.
ptr_void··on Can you tell a robot apart from a human? Real-Life Turing Test
I suspect this might be using a coin-toss to print whether the prediction was correct. Some of the test, it had to be near impossible for robot to respond as it did.

ptr_void··on Do You Trust This Computer? [video]
It looks good with editing, graphics stock footage and such but not really for HN demographic. Some of the AI commentaries are also very exaggerated in places.

ptr_void··on ‘Testilying’ by Police: A Stubborn Problem
In practice, that might get you more in trouble. I like to think LEO as well connected gang members. One should generally do what they tell you to not make them angry in any way. And after the interaction is over, one can think about taking legal action if necessary. Some sort of on person hidden video recorder would be better, as LEO can make up charges or plant things, but that's too much annoyance for normal people, so complying to whatever the ask is the best option. If you want to assert your right that might upset police, camera whose memory can't be destroyed easily is a must if you don't want to end up in prison.
ptr_void··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
My non-expert opinion is that we will not see self driving cars become reality in our lifetime. I don't understand why anyone believes training on some videos/pictures to calculate some probabilities would ever be enough to handle all the complexities of the real world.

ptr_void··on WeWork is going to acquire Meetup
I have been sitting on a startup idea in combination of use cases of something like meetup and similar to what WeWork does for a 2+ years. I have no business expertise so any hypothetical chance of success would have been very small, nevertheless I feel like it's been a missed opportunity for me. Would be interesting to see if they go into the route I was thinking of and manage to make something big.
ptr_void··on What if consciousness is not what drives the human mind?
Not sure about non-disprovable, subject of consciousness has been keeping philosophers busy for a while. Consciousness maybe out of real of any science indefinitely or for the moment, depending on which theory you subscribe to.
ptr_void··on What if consciousness is not what drives the human mind?
Whether neuroscience can tell what consciousness is or isn't is still an open question
ptr_void··on The software engineering notebook
Used vimwiki for a while until I accidentally deleted few top level file with lots of file links and now it is almost impossible to get it all organized again without going through very file. Tried some DIY versions with markdown files in directory structure, but the solution isn't too good.

ptr_void··on Martin Shkreli jailed for offering bounty for Hillary Clinton's hair
I think you are reading too much into my comment. Also not sure where the question of racism is coming from.

> I don't care how deep you are into which edgy internet community.

That would be youtube? (https://www.youtube.com/results?q=martin+shkreli&sp=CANQFA%2...), when he had twitter I followed him there.

He occasionally makes fun of/converse with uninformed people who try to yell at him for his infamy on his live-stream. I think they are harmless. He does other lite trolling for people less familiar with his infamy. Other times, just normal conversation in unconventional ways/tones, he seems to be a quick-thinker when talking. I generally find his doings on the internet entertaining.

ptr_void··on Martin Shkreli jailed for offering bounty for Hillary Clinton's hair
You are right(I would agree with mikestew's comment as well), I haven't thought about it in this terms before originally commenting about it here.

He created large companies from nothing, invented rare disease drug and is a pretty good occasional internet entertainer. It's still sad as general case that a person of his intelligence managed to make such big mistake and now have to stay in a maximum-security prison for it.

ptr_void··on Martin Shkreli jailed for offering bounty for Hillary Clinton's hair
I have been following a lot of his social media activities for a while, it's sad to see this happen. He is known for making jokes/tolling people. Also, part of his expertise is in pricing things and his net worth is supposedly in 100s of millions - if he was serious, the price would have reflected that. My guess is that everyone involved in the legal process knew very well that this was a joke - his bail is being revoked to teach him a lesson for insulting the legal process + infamy from his misunderstood price hike.

Washington post says: "He will be sent to a maximum-security prison until his sentencing hearing in January." That sounds a little too extreme for a joke while on bail for white collar crime. I don't understand, how, this otherwise very smart person couldn't be smart with the legal system - maybe it's the anxiety medication he takes or just miscalculations - who knows.

ptr_void··on Lessons learned from implementing a text editor related to front-end development
> is atypical

I don't think it's very atypical, for example take a look at this course requirement for City College of New York under CUNY :

https://www.ccny.cuny.edu/sites/default/files/csc-prereqs-04...

Under the CS parts, only the elective in category A, B, and C is where student can pick and choose. Everything else under the grey curve across the pdf are:

> courses offered by the CS dept, AND that everyone takes.

ptr_void··on Our Broken Economy, in One Simple Chart
Thanks, I didn't realize this aspect of inflation. Although I'd imagine the straight forward measure is good enough when it is used for relative comparisons between top x% to bottom y%.
