ptman··on Upcoming coordinated security fix for all Matrix server implementations
In fact the matrix specification is owned by the foundation, not the company.
ptman··on Upcoming coordinated security fix for all Matrix server implementations
Matrix messages/events are limited to 64kB if you disallow attachments
ptman··on AI Angst
So you promote the most efficient employees and let them use tools like AI if they like
ptman··on DNS4EU for Public Is Available
dns4eu has some public eu money backing it, while dns0.eu has nextdns money backing it
ptman··on EasyTier – P2P mesh VPN written in Rust using Tokio
To the web page source. But the software itself is under https://github.com/EasyTier/EasyTier
ptman··on Why are banks still getting authentication so wrong?
Do they actually compare the picture on the driver's license to your face or do they only scan the barcode? In some cases the barcode is on the backside. I've many times seen that they don't even look at the side of the card with the picture. So you can just present a suitable barcode for them to scan. "Verification" indeed...
ptman··on Why Archers Didn't Volley Fire
Compound bows were invented after the mid 1900s. 1966 says wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compound_bow
ptman··on The SeL4 Microkernel: An Introduction [pdf]
seL4 in Rust?
ptman··on Some notes on Grafana Loki's new "structured metadata"
@valyala , as others have noted, you are CEO of VictoriaMetrics and have written (most of?) VictoriaLogs. How is VictoriaLogs coming along? This is an older blog post.
ptman··on MinLZ: Efficient and fast Snappy/LZ4 style compressor in Go (Apache 2.0)
The blog post is quite nice: https://blog.min.io/minlz-compression-algorithm/

But comparisons with zstd & lz4 would be nice.

Is someone planning on a wuffs/rust implementation with C API so that it wouldn't be Go only?

ptman··on Mox – modern, secure, all-in-one email server
I'm not really interested in these setups that combine postfix, dovecot, opendkim etc. Those aren't what I consider modern all-in-one email servers.

ptman··on Mox – modern, secure, all-in-one email server
Has someone compared this to other modern alternatives? Stalwart (open core), chasquid, maddy, ...?
ptman··on OpenBSD Innovations

Parent wasn't about rust specifically. Just something safer than C

ptman··on Show HN: A Better Log Service
VictoriaLogs is similar, but a nice improvement over Loki
ptman··on Hyundai just launched its cheapest EV in Japan
(green) hydrogen fuel cells have much worse energy efficiency than batteries.

ptman··on Servo Revival: 2023-2024
But a rewrite may allow for an overall better architecture.
ptman··on How we centralized and structured error handling in Golang
I'm still just growing organically. Constant errors are useful for sentinel values https://dave.cheney.net/2016/04/07/constant-errors . RFC9457 https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc9457 is useful for REST (JSON) APIs. pkg/errors is nice for stack traces. I define error structs with field to pass structured data instead of trying to parse strings.
ptman··on PostgreSQL High Availability Solutions – Part 1: Jepsen Test and Patroni
Anyone familiar with autobase.tech?
ptman··on I Didn't Need Kubernetes, and You Probably Don't Either
So what is the self-hosted solution for running something like cloud run on your own hardware? Multiple servers and optional redundancy so not dokku.
ptman··on ZetaOffice: LibreOffice in the Browser
Cryptpad, which includes a bundled copy of onlyoffice, works quite nicely.
ptman··on Matrix Client Tutorial
Missing at any given moment. There's eventual consistency. But sometimes connectivity isn't 100%
ptman··on Daisy, an AI granny wasting scammers' time
I wish it was available on my pixel, but only in US I guess.
ptman··on Matrix Client Tutorial
Many of these problems stem from the fact that matrix is federated. And it's a protocol, not really even for messaging but for a federated graph database. In federation some messages may be missing and arrive out-of-order. And different clients have different capabilities. There's a really simple example client implemented in a couple of lines of bash.
ptman··on Matrix Client Tutorial
The matrix developers are experienced IM developers. They've built systems on XMPP and custom protocols before. Their estimate was that because of matrix being federated, every feature was 5-10x harder to implement than in centralized systems.

ptman··on What I wish someone told me about Postgres
sqlfluff is better than https://github.com/darold/pgFormatter , but it can get confused at times.
ptman··on Visual Basic 6 rebuilt in C# – complete with form designer and IDE in browser
are you certain? At least mobile phones (android+ios+maybe some other with somewhat modern web browser) outnumber desktops/laptops.
ptman··on XMPP: The Gem of Instant Messaging
I'm sorry, bad choice of words. I didn't mean to imply that it's worse in any way. I use it myself. Uncustomized? Vanilla? Upstream? IIRC Beeper has patched various things.
