psychphysic··on UK police say 88 people who bought sodium nitrite from Canadian websites died
Such bad journalism it took so long to work out if he put poison in this stuff or people were using it to poison themselves.

So it's curing salt but misuse can lead to death.

Unfortunately for this guy the UK is such a nanny state they'd probably go after him for murder if he sold a toothpick if it could take someone's eye out.

psychphysic··on Bypassing Bitlocker using a cheap logic analyzer on a Lenovo laptop
The point of this kind of encryption is that a removed hardrive can be sold or repurposed without data risk.

Anyone can boot the laptop and get to the decrypted hard drive, what does it matter if they sniff the key first? They always had access to the end result of they can boot the laptop.

psychphysic··on New ancient ape from Türkiye challenges the story of human origins
There is a vague movement to adopt countries preferred names and pronunciation.

It's fairly patchy ultimately.

Beijing/Peking, Mumbai/Bombay, Kyiv/Kiev, Czechia/Czech Republic.

Foods seem unaffected funnily enough Peking Duck, Bombay Mix, Chicken Kiev.

psychphysic··on On keeping sketchbooks
I seem to have very little on my mind, probably why I struggle to maintain journalling.
psychphysic··on On keeping sketchbooks
Big endian dates always make me laugh.

They are okay, but exist mostly because American insist on using a terrible MM-DD-YYYY format usually and while DD-MM-YYYY makes more sense it'd be confusing while Americans continue to use MM-DD.

Similarly, imperial units are terrible 12 inches to foot, 3 feet to yard. Fractions of inches for small lengths...

And British driving on the left. A hold out that complicates the entire worlds roads and car production.

psychphysic··on On keeping sketchbooks
I've tried maintaining a diary and a sketch book and can't usually last more than 6 months before they are lost and totally forgotten. It's still nice to find them in all fairness.

I've never found any personal benefit in the moment using them, I'm not sure if 6 months is not enough or for whatever reason they don't work for me.

psychphysic··on On keeping sketchbooks
The hell you talking about.
psychphysic··on Ten killed in private jet crash – Wagner leader Prigozhin 'on passenger list'
On the left the unusual cloud looks very much like the contrail of a missile like object flying mostlt vertically.

But his jet would be too high for a manpad, and a fighter jet would have likely fired from above cloud cover and missile wouldn't have left a contrail. There is some separation between left suspect cloud and the start of the jets con/smoke even. The visible jets con/smoke is wobbly which makes it seem like the was jet hit and then started tumbling before it breaks apart at quite low altitude. Whatever happened rapidly made the jet enter unstable flight.

Is it likely the plane was shot down if so likely a shoot and scoot system like pantasir S1, or the cloud is nothing and it was a small bomb on board.

I put my money on faking his own death.

Mostly uninformed hot take.

psychphysic··on Chandrayaan-3 Lands on the Moon
Well put.
psychphysic··on Chandrayaan-3 Lands on the Moon
Out of curiosity, what are flat earthers saying? That Russia faked a crash and India faked a success? Why?!
psychphysic··on Chandrayaan-3 Soft-landing [video]
Congratulations India! And everyone.

Actually congratulations to all countries still running space programmes including Russia's failure.

The more the merrier.

This is a stupendously difficult thing to do, India is truly a superpower.

psychphysic··on Natural beekeepers are the radical dissenters of apiculture
That makes more sense, but the answer is still of course not.

It's not like beekeepers keep their hives significantly overlap with where wild bees live.

psychphysic··on Sex Workers Took Refuge in Crypto. Now It’s Failing Them
There's no good reason not to have your own wallet these days.

Even mobile wallets support lightening network (like Muun).

Bitrefill is handy for getting the off gift card.

psychphysic··on Natural beekeepers are the radical dissenters of apiculture
No of course not. Paywalled article so just guessing.
psychphysic··on Canadian Officials Condemn Facebook for News Ban as Wildfires Burn
Canada, pull yourself together man.
psychphysic··on Japan: sales of train ticket/shopping payment cards suspended indefinitely
What about us peasants on android?
psychphysic··on Japan: sales of train ticket/shopping payment cards suspended indefinitely
Wait, due to shortages they will only sell disposable cards.

Not let's simplify workflow and make all cards the reusable type.

I suppose it might be a cheap, simpler and more available IC that maybe only decrements a secure memory location. But that is stupid.

Oyster cards are surprisingly excellent despite some issues between them and contactless and NFC.

The French Navigo is not bad either, I like that registration isn't to a centralised DB. But their tickets have their own issue and not to mention their single use magstrip tickets are hopelessly fragile.

psychphysic··on The feds asked TikTok for lots of domestic spying features
Wowza, it's clear Feds weren't interested in preventing spying so much as to start themselves.
psychphysic··on Enhancement of mosquito trapping efficiency using pulse width modulated LEDs
Remember that 2-32Hz is the hot zone for photosensitive epilepsy.
psychphysic··on How Hinge's algorithm decides who you date
I have been in a relationship since before tinder and it continues strong.

When tinder came out my single friends all jumped on it. I probably went hoarse with all the tinfoil hat warnings I doled out.

Eventually I shrugged my shoulders and admitted maybe corps aren't as evil as I imagined.

Looking at this article I realise I was a fool to try and judge them during the onboarding phase. They are worse than I'd imagined.

psychphysic··on Anxious brains redirect emotion regulation
I think that's just the type of problem CBT practitioners love to work on.
psychphysic··on Anxious brains redirect emotion regulation
Eh? I don't understand what you're saying.
psychphysic··on Anxious brains redirect emotion regulation
Ah I'm not sure you can extend this study to high anxiety circumstances in otherwise non-anxious people.

The executive functions that highly anxious people need to engage are precisely the functions that high stress levels disrupt.

This is about low stress situations in anxious people.

Not high stress situations in non-anxious people.

It's not likely that we can extrapolate between the two. And it's likely under those scenarios a third or more mechanism comes into play (flight, fight, freeze).

Not to mention the control were all men so we do need better sample for replication before we consider extrapolation.

psychphysic··on Anxious brains redirect emotion regulation
The paper suggests rTMS to disrupt the disruptive activities.

The emotional challenge in this study was that you had a joystick and sometimes you pulled that joystick towards you when you saw an unhappy face. That's what was paralysing emotional challenge was for highly anxious people. Meaning it's unlikely their PFl could have any control in real life scenarios. It's important to note that in both anxious and non-anxious people the PFl was highly excitable. It's the pattern of its activity that makes a difference.

Cognition is hard work and the truth is you can't reason about your entire life and expect much success. Like driving a car as a learner your whole life, I remember the first driving lesson I had, I couldn't even focus with the radio on. Imagine if every time you got in you had less intuition about how to drive.

Think of the absence of fpi as a lack of intuition you get once you learn to drive.

CBT +/- an SSRI for 6months is a small price to pay to regain intuition.

psychphysic··on Anxious brains redirect emotion regulation
Avoid avoidance.

This is a study on the structural appearance of anxiety driven behaviours.

Treatment remains the same, CBT +/- SSRI which facilitates relearning behaviours via Dopamine actions.

Paper speculates TMS might be used to disrupt some brain regions.

psychphysic··on Anxious brains redirect emotion regulation
According to the paper avoidance begets avoidance.

Avoidance and success in anxiety inducing situations both lead to relief. Most of us have plenty of experience of both leading to balanced future responses.

psychphysic··on Anxious brains redirect emotion regulation
More accurately multiple parts of the brain are activated when considering anxious situations.

In anxious people the FPI is unable to override the avoidance behaviours.

The key is not to limit overload you don't have much choice there, it's to use other mechanisms to make your seek exposure and not continue avoidance.

CBT is all about teaching those skills the paper mentions TMS.

psychphysic··on Two men die in Ironman Cork competition in Ireland
There's video of competitors marching into waves that appear to be as tall as they are.

I'm not sure under any other circumstances would the competitors have swam (or trained) in waters like that.

psychphysic··on Russia's Luna-25 crashes in to Moon
> it was just a refusal to accept your moving the goalposts.

Moving goal posts! Were on the topic of missions to land the south pole of the moon.

You move the goal posts from landing on the south pole to any mission to the moon and add in a caveat of 100 success rate.

Disproven there you claim if the mission didn't leave earth orbit it's not relevant. Disproven there.

You move the goal posts to entirely to UN votes!

Hahahaha what on earth are you smoking?!

I for one will look forwards to India pulling this off, an achievement no other nation has managed..not even the US.
