psychphysic··on Medical-evidence giant Cochrane battles funding cuts and closures
National Insurance is a tax, additionally after 100k you start losing your personal allowance.

The net effect is an effective tax rate much higher than the nominal rate.

You lose other benefits to but they aren't factored in as depend on if you have kids or not etc.

psychphysic··on Medical-evidence giant Cochrane battles funding cuts and closures
What's the difference in pay between a "full doctor" as you put it consultant (UK) or attending (US)?

UK a consultant earns £100k pretax and pays approximately 30% net tax rate and 60% marginal rate.

What about US?

Apparently family medicine in the US brings in 130% more than the equivalent in the UK (GP which makes up half of all UK doctors).

https://revisingrubies.com/us-vs-uk-doctors-salary/

That's truly astounding.

Given in the UK doctors have taken a real terms paycut circa of over 25% [0] the UK is not currently fit to fund anything.

psychphysic··on Portal 64 – A demake of Portal for the Nintendo 64
Sounds like you want to hire them?

Or not pay them, and tell them what they can work on?

How long before versions are distributed ready to play?
psychphysic··on Call of Duty enlists AI to eavesdrop on voice chat and help ban toxic players
By definition the gamers are adults, and playing at murder.

Some as terrorists.

Can't they just mute or block people they don't like? Cheating is the only real problem.

psychphysic··on Call of Duty enlists AI to eavesdrop on voice chat and help ban toxic players
But surely they realise that's the entire player base?
psychphysic··on Hacking the Timex m851
This does seem nice and even simpler than TI's Ez430-chronos [0].

That said, 3 years on a single battery doesn't seem great of course I suppose it depends what apps you use and load..and that it's programmable that is cool.

psychphysic··on The worst programmer I know
> The word for that is "trolling".

Oh that is fascinating, so highlighting a verbatim quote, in context can be trolling?

What that makes me think of is that people are in denial about what the quote tells us and have displaced those feelings on to me! Amazing stuff.

> I asked and you avoided answering. What does that tell us?

This is interesting because no you didn't ask me what it tells us. You asked if I wanted to say something and I answered that the quote stands alone.

Really interesting stuff in this thread!

psychphysic··on The worst programmer I know
I'm actually quite enjoying how divisive a simple quote can be.

I wonder how often I've made a comment and gotten no engagement. This quote seems to have gotten more engagement than the original comment. And quite emotive engagement.

Makes me wonder what that means. Is it genuine curiosity? Or is the quote saying something that the original commenter couldn't see themselves? It's interesting they suggested if I was insinuating something negative about them.

Importantly, they did not ask me. They told me. That too tells us something about what pairing experience with them would be.

psychphysic··on Meta and Alphabet may owe 4% of Canada revenue to news outlets under draft rules
I think it's too valuable to Meta and Alphabet to retain the option to exit a market than comply with these restrictions.

Similar attitude to the UK Online Safety Bill.

Giving in would just start a landslide of restrictions and demands for moneym

psychphysic··on Meta and Alphabet may owe 4% of Canada revenue to news outlets under draft rules
I doubt if either will have any interest in paying any amount since it'd open the door to every country wanting some payment.

Better to continue blocking Canada and ignore.

psychphysic··on Modern genetic data suggests pre-humans were a group of only 1,280 individuals
The article suggests control of fire is what lead to recovery of the population. So indeed quite a different time.
psychphysic··on Modern genetic data suggests pre-humans were a group of only 1,280 individuals
The estimate is the estimate (1280 with SEM of 131).

It's be foolish of them to mask it intentionally.

Once independent estimates are made then you might synthesize an reasonable estimate.

Both the editor summary I'm science and the headline here don't place much emphasis on the precise number.

psychphysic··on RyujinX – Open Source Nintendo Switch Emulator
Yuzu also has an android build although I believe it runs only on snapdragon devices.

https://yuzu-emu.org/entry/yuzu-android/

On desktop at least it has an early access programme via patreon (but available here https://pineappleea.github.io/ )

Skyline runs on Android but I've never managed to get it to work on any device. It's no longer in development

This must depend on your jurisdiction.

But if you own the game, does it matter how you got the ROM?

psychphysic··on Buffer Overflows in Notepad++
Yeah feature creep is a crime in open source projects.

It's killed more useful projects than it's ever benefitted.

psychphysic··on ISPs should not police online speech no matter how awful it is
The ACLU are pretty useless these days
psychphysic··on ISPs should not police online speech no matter how awful it is
It feels like it's pretty much gameover for free speech in any context.

Too much of the population of the world wants rid and it doesn't matter much that they disagree on precisely which opinions are unacceptable.

psychphysic··on Most cancer screenings don’t extend life, study finds
Indeed there are dramatic differences between ascending and descending colon cancers.

They are also dissimilar in their chances of presenting early with symptoms making screening less useful vs those that don't present early.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6089587/

psychphysic··on Most cancer screenings don’t extend life, study finds
This is not an unexpected result. Last I checked breast self examination also does not reduce deaths from breast cancer, nor testicular self examination.

If anyone's interested the "Wilson criteria" is the basis of decisions about screening programmes and many run programmes fail it.

psychphysic··on Frequent and infrequent users of social media respond differently to rewards
Suspiciously in time for the even more addictive vaping boom.

But this is all beside the point.

psychphysic··on Frequent and infrequent users of social media respond differently to rewards
It's funny that we're so compelled to innumerate all the ways social media is toxic and not do anything about it.

Yet Canada is considering printing individual warnings on cigarettes despite fully saturating understanding that smoking is bad.

I'm fully with each and every tweet warning you "tweeting makes you a dickbag please reconsider"

psychphysic··on UK police say 88 people who bought sodium nitrite from Canadian websites died
Seems a bit odd for people to order this food additive all the way from Canada for use in the UK? Your local cash and carry probably stocks if.
