psv1··on Keras, Tensorflow neural nets can run faster
Hi, I have a couple of suggestions:

- add "Show HN" to the title of your post

- make sure that you're actually sharing something instead of just advertising

I'm interested in faster deep learning. There is no way that I would message you, ask to see your code, go through it and then give you feedback. On the other hand, if you link to a repository, I'm sure that many people on HN will be happy to give you feedback.

psv1··on Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks?
> so obviously bookmarks also need to store the last viewed site content

Yeah, just save every page you ever open to disk. Just in case. Right? Also sync all of that data on multiple machines. But what if the syncing service disappears some day? Better ask for a self-hosted solution. But a free one. Which saves everything. Just in case anything ever gets lost. How much better life would be then.

psv1··on Ask HN: How do you manage your bookmarks?
> I have more than 5000 bookmarks on firefox

With the risk of sounding like someone on StackOverflow, do you even need to do this?

I have <100 bookmarks at any time and regular bookmark directories with browser sync work great. I don't have a good solution for efficiently managing thousands. But I also can't imagine that you'll ever actually read all of them, or need to re-read most of them. It's okay to see something on the internet and not save it.

psv1··on Ask HN: How do we know that WhatsApp doesn't spy on messages?
I really think that you aren't even trying to understand what other people are writing in this thread and you're just going back to the same ideas that were in your head before you asked your question.
psv1··on Ask HN: How do we know that WhatsApp doesn't spy on messages?
> the idea of E2E is precisely to remove trust from the equation

It doesn't do that. You don't have a way to verify what software runs when you send a whatsapp message.

psv1··on Ask HN: How do we know that WhatsApp doesn't spy on messages?
1. You can't know. (Unless something confirming the opposite leaks in the future).

2. Facebook's reputation is so bad when it comes to privacy at this point that trusting them is just naive.

3. Even in the best case, your metadata is certainly used. Facebook didn't pay over $20 billion for a service with no monetisation model purely out of the goodness of their hearts.

4. Whatsapp has good network effects at least here in the UK - when your flatmates or coworkers have a group chat, you can't just say "Well, let's get everyone over to Signal.". You either use Whatsapp or go without the group chat.

psv1··on A Sober Look at Bayesian Neural Networks
It's great that's it's consistent. My problem is that the notation only makes sense if you already understand the very thing that he's trying to explain with this notation.
psv1··on A Sober Look at Bayesian Neural Networks
The paragraph beginning with "Let’s consider how we might apply the Bayesian framework..." where he introduces the notation is a great example of everything I hate about mathematical notation. We have big-F, small-f, f-of-x, f-sub-x, f-star, big-F-star... and then he decides to abbreviate what he just introduced. If I didn't know what's happening and I was trying to understand this for the first time, I would have no chance and would just give up right there.

> Mozilla, and every other website owner, must play the game

No. Mozilla and every other contributor still have a responsibility for what they put out there. Google and Facebook messing up the overall environment doesn't let individual contributors off the hook.

Open source can also be mostly building things that are pointless or already exist.

psv1··on Ask HN: Those who run dev shops – what products do you pay for?
I'm not being snarky or argumentative - I genuinely don't understand what you're saying. What's below/upwards/downwards, what's the value between layers?
psv1··on Ask HN: Those who run dev shops – what products do you pay for?
On a somehow related note: Am I alone in thinking that sometimes a lot of software development feels almost like a giant pyramid scheme with multiple steps in between? You build software for companies that build software and provide services to companies that build software for companies that...
psv1··on Making Python Programs Blazingly Fast
That's interesting. How do you think R fares in this respect?

(The problem that I'm having with Julia isn't the math/computational aspect, it's Julia's use as a more general purpose programming language in additional to math.)

psv1··on Thinking Fast and Slow, Deep Learning, and AI [video]
The deadpan delivery and lack of personality, the arrogant attitude, the poor quality of the questions that he asks, the fact that he reads questions from a sheet in front of him instead of listening to his guests and having a real conversation with them, the way in which he comes across as disingenuous in most interactions... I could go on (and I know that a lot of this is subjective).
psv1··on Thinking Fast and Slow, Deep Learning, and AI [video]
The quality of the guests is amazing but the host is extremely off-putting and difficult to listen to.
psv1··on Making Python Programs Blazingly Fast
I wouldn't claim that it's dead - it just fails to deliver on its main promise and the developer experience is still quite poor.
psv1··on Making Python Programs Blazingly Fast
> Python's benefits as programming language are meaningless.

Being the most flexible and user-friendly interface to the most powerful libraries written in other languages isn't meaningless.

psv1··on Ask HN: Why HN lets sharing content that is behind a paywall e.g. WSJ?
from OP:

> I frustrate when I clicked to a title or entry and when I go to the tab I see that I need to pay for a subscription to see the content. I think this creates a great struggle in an open community like HN.

psv1··on Ask HN: Anyone feel Stack Overflow is becoming less helpful and more snarky?
SO has had a very similar trajectory to Google search - getting worse over time because of some fundamental product decisions, no real hope for improvement in sight and somehow still the best product in their category.
psv1··on Ask HN: What tools do you use for data munging and merging?
Yep, I've seen the link. Never managed to get it to run "until the iteration output stream does not receive any more records" though, nor did I see that documented anywhere.

> you might want to try using the Python tool

Yep, I just end up using Python outside of Alteryx altogether.

psv1··on Ask HN: What tools do you use for data munging and merging?
I agree with this and I also prefer a programming language over a GUI. My point was that there isn't a limitation of GUI ETL tools that's specific to structured data.
psv1··on Ask HN: What tools do you use for data munging and merging?
> There are examples of this online.

Can you link to any of them? I wasn't able to find anything that actually works when I needed to do this a while ago. (I needed to repeatedly hit a REST API until it returned no results.)

psv1··on Ask HN: What tools do you use for data munging and merging?
The connection would prevent it from starting up for me because it verifies the license each time you start the program.

Neither vectorisation, nor batch macros (nor iterative macros) allow you to run the same set of commands until a condition is met in Alteryx.

psv1··on Ask HN: How do you make your warm-up time shorter
Has it occurred to you that you need a warm-up because you're in the office at 6am?
psv1··on Ask HN: What tools do you use for data munging and merging?
Problems with Alteryx come when you need to share a workflow with other people, or need any functionality outside of the basic tools, or need a loop, or need good documentation, or your internet is down which completely blocks this otherwise-desktop application, or need compatibility with an older version of Alteryx...

I could go on but my point is that beyond the most basic tasks the functionality of Alteryx is limited, the user experience is horrendous and the price isn't justified whatsoever.

psv1··on Ask HN: What tools do you use for data munging and merging?
The model works absolutely fine with structured data. In these kinds of applications, you usually connect different nodes on a canvas, each node representing a data source, join, transformation etc. and each connection represents the flow of data.
psv1··on Ask HN: How long do you think you will live?
Long term and on a large scale there are interesting implications - societal changes that come with an older population, retirement age and how people plan their last decades, improved quality of life in your later years, certain treatments and quality of medical care being only available in certain countries or only to people above a certain level of wealth...

On a personal level, I'm still in my 20s and it really doesn't matter to me right now if I would live to 70, 90 or 110 - it wouldn't impact any of the decisions that I would make in the next 2 or 10 years.
