psbp··on Google I/O Registration now open
If you're attending in hopes of giveaways, you shouldn't go.
psbp··on Google Contributor
They're experimenting with youtube donations on some channels, also there's a Youtube for kids app on iOS and Android that has ads, but they're limited to children's programming.
psbp··on Microsoft's Productivity Future Vision
That video seemed incredibly prescient. A lot of the features in the video are a couple years off from mass adoption, and maybe it's a bit more geared towards the 90s mindset, but there's a current day equivalent to most of the functionality.
psbp··on Peter Thiel's Dropout Club
It's a shame that Christopher Welch died. Funniest character in that show, and he had great performances in Synechdoche New York, The Master, etc.
psbp··on Why I would never want to compete with Travis Kalanick
This might be the worst post I've ever seen on the frontpage of HN.
psbp··on Hands-On with Microsoft's New Holographic Goggles
Google's investment wasn't through Ventures.
psbp··on Hands-On with Microsoft's New Holographic Goggles
Google's response would presumably be their partnership with Magic Leap.
psbp··on Google Glass sales halted
I don't understand how moving it from (a highly public) R&D to a product division means that we'll be hearing less.
psbp··on Google Glass sales halted
I'm not sure what it means for the future of Glass, but doesn't the title and most of the content of the article undermine that it's being moved to an actual product division?
psbp··on A Career in Science Will Cost You Your Firstborn
Yeah, that statement only applies to scientists IMO, and to a huge degree. You'd be surprised to see what kind of research simply can't get funding.
psbp··on “The Interview” Now Available on Google Play and YouTube Movies
http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/12/24/sony-wanted-the-in...
psbp··on The Society of Mind Video Lectures
They probably haven't updated the iOS app yet.
psbp··on The Society of Mind Video Lectures
And youtube, which is finally an iTunesU replacement now that it has background listening.
psbp··on Algorithms on Khan Academy – a collaboration with Dartmouth College professors
What is the Khan Academy approach to article vs. video formats? IMO, lessons with video introductions then a hybrid of text with interactive exercises as the bulk of the lesson would be ideal.

Is KA working towards an ideal combination of methods or are you guys experimenting depending on the topic?

psbp··on Larry Page is making huge bets on new technology
I've seen a lot of these about Page recently. I wonder if we're going to see a more aggressive shakeup.
psbp··on Microsoft Band
Maybe he means that MS has made an attractive device that supports its competitor's (more popular) platforms?
psbp··on Nexus 6
If I only wanted to use the core functions of the phone (browsing, calls, etc.), I would definitely buy a Windows Phone. It's just lacking a lot of fun, useful apps.
psbp··on Google Now vs. Siri vs. Cortana – The Great Knowledge Box Showdown
It makes sense that it would answer the question first and then give relevant info. Most of the factual questions that I ask would be related to a broader context.
psbp··on Why Free Online Classes Are Still the Future of Education
Khan has said that he wants to explore more specific, advanced topics at some point. I think they realized their opportunity to stay relevant (and well funded) is to first focus on K-12.
psbp··on Why Free Online Classes Are Still the Future of Education
That networking has to be done in proximity to other people is, and will increasingly be, an outdated concept.
psbp··on Why Free Online Classes Are Still the Future of Education
There are plenty of people in online learning that agree with your first paragraph, but it's easier said than done.

Lectures are easier than creating a completely different methodology for teaching, so it's the first step in the process.

psbp··on Why Free Online Classes Are Still the Future of Education
Coursera actually offers several classes that can be done at your own pace. It's gradually expanding, and will eventually offer a wide range of courses. There's also plenty of courses that aren't closed after their completion date.

EdX has done the same with their Introduction to Linux course: https://www.edx.org/course/linuxfoundationx/linuxfoundationx...

psbp··on Sebastian Thrun Has Left His Role as Google VP and Fellow
Well, at least three of its products are being used in the real world (Glass, Loon, Self-driving cars) and at least one is actually being sold (Glass), so yes.
psbp··on Apple Watch: Initial Thoughts and Observations
>Perhaps there's some use case where the digital crown is a preferable method of input (setting a very exact numerical value for example)

Home automation.

psbp··on Google’s Deal for Polar Shows It Has Not Given Up on Google+
I think a G+ nearby feature: http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/06/06/exclusive-google-wil...

Would go a long way to make G+ compelling. There's still not a good tool for sharing pictures/video on mobile. MMS/SMS is too clunky when I want to share something with 2 or more nearby friends.

I wish I could take a picture, swipe up and to the left from the picture to initiate sharing, and click on the "nearby" or "frequent" chat-heads that I want to share the picture with.

psbp··on iPhone 6 and Android value
In my limited use of both, Google is better at voice recognition. I'm not sure why they haven't built a true siri competitor.
psbp··on iPhone 6 and Android value
But it's in Google's interest to have all of those benefits available on Apple's platform as well.
psbp··on A Watch Guy's Thoughts on the Apple Watch After Seeing It in the Metal
I love the way my Nexus 5 runs. I use it just as much as my iPhone 5 and although it doesn't have the same UX niceties, it's still plenty smooth and fast.

What really frustrates me is the camera. Some photos are great, others look like the image has been made deliberately bad. I don't think the Nexus phones will deliver a great camera experience any time soon, and there's only so much compensation that G+ can make to a dull, blurry photo.

psbp··on The Apple Watch
It may be that Google did a pretty good job of preemptively responding to the Apple Watch, but I don't find this that much more interesting than the already not very interesting Android Wear devices.
psbp··on The New Moto G
Yep, I'm coming up on a contract renewal and I think I'm going to use it to resell the new iPhone and then buy the Moto G and the new iPad.

I just don't use my phone enough to play games or mess around with apps.
