protonbob··on I'm Tired of Being on the Network
The tech was great. I mean the ads sucked. Maybe it was better before I tuned in.
protonbob··on I'm tired of being on the network
My solution to this is carrying two devices. One turned off iphone and a TCL flip 2. The flip phone runs android 11 so I can use signal to stay connected with international family, but for anything else it is useless other than calling, texting, and basic email

> I long for the days of driving through the night with AM radio, where at least the ads were interesting.

AM radio sucked.

> Sure but the vast majority of what people use and consume is a replacement for what "evolution has come up with". That doesn't inherently make it "bad".

This is not true at all. What are you talking about? In general most people eat regular foods that come from the ground not ultraprocessed foods.

I don't know why you are nitpicking so much about the smoking example. I said it was an extreme example of something that is relatively worse but some people are comfortable calling categorically bad.

Smoking does have a physical upside. It's a wonderful nootropic. Sparkling water has the exact same chemical makeup as regular water. Formula is trying to replace something that evolution has come up with that is purpose made to feed and develop the brains of infants and young children. That is not a good comparison at all.

The nutritional content is absolutely worse. I am sure that long term, many children can recover from it at least physically and cognitively.

As far as making an absolute claim, colloquially, people say something is bad when they mean worse than the alternative. To make an extreme example, smoking is much worse for you than caffeine but they are similar in many aspects. I do not feel the need to say that smoking is relatively worse. I say "Smoking is bad".

Ironically, the story of the Bible is that caring about others can cost you an excruciating death.

It’s also just worse for the baby in pretty much every metric. And yes it does make it bad. That means they have to get more liquids than they normally would and get gas. Why would you put bad in quotes? Do you know understand how a food can be good or bad?

Sorry density of nutrients.
protonbob··on How the Tobacco Industry Drove the Rise of Ultra-Processed Foods (2025)
Yes and pretty much all baby formula is bad. Vegetable oil is often the #1 ingredient and is not even close to having the same density as breast milk. It can be life saving, but it’s not an example of UPF being generally good.

Also supermarket whole wheat bread is very different than real bread if you look at the ingredients. It’s more like bread adjacent.

Businesses are incentivized to say it’s because of AI because it makes them look better. So not saying that when actually asked by a government entity is meaningful.

A measles vaccine is actually effective at containing the spread. People with natural immunity should not have been required to get a vaccine for something they were already inoculated for and had immunity that was greater than what you could get from the vaccines
protonbob··on Private equity bought America's essential services
Yes exactly. They are great for immunocompromised people. Much less so for healthy people. Which is why it should have been an option and not mandatory.

We already know that the CDC literally lied about masks not being helpful in the early pandemic in order to protect mask supplies for healthcare workers. We also know that Fauci lied about Gain-of-Function research.

"The NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology" -- Fauci, under oath to Congress, May 2021.

NIH's Principal Deputy Director Lawrence Tabak contradicted this in writing five months later, confirming funded experiments had produced findings that met the gain-of-function threshold.

If we know that there were deliberate lies were said about certain aspects of the covid pandemic, why should we assume good intent otherwise, especially from a U.S government that is jhighly influenced by well funded lobbyists?

Not massively lowering the chances is universal.

Vaccines for respiratory illnesses are bad. Even Fauci admitted so. Why do you assume good intent from the United States government when the FDA is bought and paid for by pharmaceutical companies. There was so much money to be made on specifically covid vaccines. I am not anti vax in general.

Natural immunity was just as strong as getting vaccinated though despite what you might have been told.

"All of the included studies found at least statistical equivalence between the protection of full vaccination and natural immunity; and three studies found superiority of natural immunity" --Shenai, Rahme & Noorchashm — Cureus / PubMed, October 2021

Yeah what a shame. I never claimed that it didn't lower the chances of side effects.

This is what was claimed.

"You become a dead end to the virus." — Fauci, 2021

This was the reality

"[Vaccines against respiratory viruses produce] decidedly suboptimal protection." — Fauci, Cell Host & Microbe journal article, 2023

"The durability of protection against infection and hence transmission was relatively limited." — Fauci, 2024 congressional testimony

Anybody that questioned the religious dogma that the vaccines were super effective and that healthy people needed to get endless boosters were crucified and in many cases, fired from their jobs for refusing an unnecessary medical procedure.

‘“So even though there are breakthrough infections with vaccinated people, almost always the people are asymptomatic and the level of virus is so low it makes it extremely unlikely — not impossible but very, very low likelihood — that they’re going to transmit it,” Fauci said.‘

Extremely unlikely is a lot stronger than reduced. Calling it breakthrough implies that the norm is prevention. Obviously nothing is 100%.

Also you don’t know anything about me and what media I consume. You can’t quote me on something I didn’t say. They did say it would stop transmission.
