protomyth··on School vs. Wikipedia
From personal experience, that assumption is false. One of my parents thought they were clever, and Frostbite speed unrolled it by using the cabinet as a backing. I do miss that monster.
protomyth··on Jewish Calendar Demystified (2007)
Well, birth of Jesus. If you read the Bible you'll notice that the bishop who calculated Christ's birth was off by a number of years.
protomyth··on My Favourite Computer, an Old Mac
The original Mac mini fit perfectly in a camera case I had. That thing probably had more miles on it than some of the portables I've owned.
protomyth··on My Favourite Computer, an Old Mac
I will say the form factor of the classic Mac (in my case a Mac SE/30) was amazing for writing. The height was perfect without the ability of the text to go to just above the keyboard like a conventional monitor on a stand. I end up duplicating it by using half a window or finding a text editor that holds the current line at a certain height. It was also a very portable design. I have an old Color Classic II case that I sometime think I might mod into something a bit more modern (since it is DOA anyway).
protomyth··on IBM Power10’s Memory Inception Clustering (2021)
I dearly wish IBM would have a low cost box that allowed programmers to get familiar with the machines. At this point, their whole business is really reliant on existing companies. It doesn't even have to have all of the fancy hardware, just enough to get an actual environment up. This goes for the i Series as well as the z.
protomyth··on All Twitter users in the US will start to see crowdsourced fact checks on tweets
The mob doesn't elect our government. Individuals go into a booth and pull the lever. In a fair election, their is no interaction between people when the vote is cast. Sure, there are campaigns and such, but the voting moment is one person at a time inside their head. Mobs become a thing unto themselves and group into a dangerous thing. Their are numerous studies about how people act differently as part of a mob.
protomyth··on All Twitter users in the US will start to see crowdsourced fact checks on tweets
I've learned the mob, no matter their political beliefs, doesn't know a damn thing as a group. If there is a technical answer, it used to be possible to get a correct answer, but that is almost always through the view of some political leaning. Frankly, given the utter sh?t-show of YouTube content warnings[0], I have no faith in this crud. This just seems like a bots paradise to influence opinion and ban people.

0) the number of videos that have no mention of COVID that have COVID warnings is just staggering. Along with the Moon Conspiracy warning on a video of the X-15 is just brain dead.

protomyth··on Joining the Church of Emacs
I get the feeling a lot of vi/vim users are folks who do sysadmin (whatever fun title that has this year) and vi/vim are installed on the box by default. You don't need a very deep knowledge of vi/vim to be productive. Its basically single page cheat-sheet to be productive enough for a lot of jobs, and it works ok over a low bandwidth connection.
protomyth··on Ask HN: How to Stop Caring (Professionally)?
The common theme is that you need a new focus and all this stress is telling you that. It's fine to be wholly job focused when you own a part of it, but even that requires other outlets.

You need something else. The job needs to fade away when you leave work. If you are single, then pick some type of workout. Family people tend to concentrate more on the family. Pick something that excites you. If this isn't clicking then get a therapist. You need a mental tuneup. If that thought offends, then remember a lot of successful people do this. Sports have coaches that provide the same function.

The funny part is that you will be better at the job because problems will be in the back of your mind when you do other things and you will be healthier.

protomyth··on Ask HN: Microsoft SmartScreen is destroying our business
I should have some way to resolve the issue outside of the automation. Barring that, I should be able to sue them libel.
protomyth··on Meta ordered to pay $175M for infringing on two patents held by Voxer Inc
Actions taken against a party factor into any lawsuit.
protomyth··on Meta ordered to pay $175M for infringing on two patents held by Voxer Inc
You missed the "Facebook revoked Voxer’s access to key components of the Facebook platform". That isn't a good look when you exclude the competition even if you own the platform. Ask Microsoft how well that works in court.
protomyth··on Development of the MOS Technology 6502: A Historical Perspective
They basically lost every PC except Tandy. I got to think someone was noticing the way things were moving.
protomyth··on Development of the MOS Technology 6502: A Historical Perspective
I'm still amazed that Motorola didn't react to the extreme difference in pricing between the 6502 and 6800 quicker. I do wonder what they were being told about the early personal computer boards?
protomyth··on S.F. sued over homeless camp sweeps: city charged with criminalizing unsheltered
As to the drug-addicted or mentally unwell folks, we are going to have to figure out some other method than asylums, in neighborhood group homes, or the streets. All of these had major scandals and disfavor from the communities affected.

Its going to have to be an involuntary solution (yes, incarceration), and its probably going to involve moving people to a ranch-like area away from the city with a much different housing setup than some cells or apartments, maybe something with individual shelters with outside spaces. I expect its going to be a commitment of years or forever for some of these people. Working on people's mental health and addiction is not some 30 day process. Just the dentist bill alone will be scary, but its not going to get better in a tent in SF.

Society cannot last with this level of filth and crime in major cities.

The homeless because of cost folks, well, move to somewhere else or we are going to need a wave of mini-apartments approved at some point, but SF doesn't like such things.

protomyth··on Gas Leak in the Baltic Sea
I somehow think the USA would have done it with a bit less big explosion solution.
protomyth··on Hertz is still having rental car customers wrongfully arrested, lawsuit claims
Much like enterprise software, Hertz's customers when it comes to the enterprise is not he person getting in the car. It takes a bit or some luck/unluck for someone who matters to get hosed and end the contract.
protomyth··on America Has Lost Its Oil Buffer
You might want to go look at the pumps today since the price is now going back up.

Look at prices when he took the oath and compare. Putin didn't do it all. Shutting down US production was a huge mistake.

protomyth··on The road to Zettalinux
Yeah, IBM is one company that shows how to push the models down the road. They do take their legacy seriously.
protomyth··on The road to Zettalinux
The AS/400 and iSeries also use 128-bit pointers. 128-bit would be useful for multiple pointers already in common use such as ZFS and IP6 addresses. I expect it will the last hop for a long time.
protomyth··on Florida to Supreme Court: Let us regulate social networks as common carriers
Every law is politically motivated. "Freedom of Speech" is a politically motivated.
protomyth··on Florida to Supreme Court: Let us regulate social networks as common carriers
Before 2018 they were, and now they are listed as Title I information services. There is a bit of a court fight over the ability of state regulators to impose rules. I would imagine that they could be moved back if they cause trouble for politicians.
protomyth··on Florida to Supreme Court: Let us regulate social networks as common carriers
Private companies are regulated all the time. Look up the rules for any utility or communications company. They banned politicians, so that's going to get laws passed.
protomyth··on Florida to Supreme Court: Let us regulate social networks as common carriers
Welcome to the natural consequence of social networks becoming important to just do daily business. The phone companies, and other utilities, operate under strict rules. I do wonder how many and type of companies will become internet utilities?
protomyth··on The Framework Laptop Chromebook Edition
Well, the thing is, because of COVID and some other factors, we figured it was better just to give it to the student and tell them if they break it, then its their problem. Admittedly, a bit mercenary, but we are a community college and students should lean to be careful. Now, we'll help of course in odd circumstances and we did purchase extended warranties.

Strangely, its easier to get money for purchases than have a repair budget, but that US government funding for you.

protomyth··on The Framework Laptop Chromebook Edition
We bought refurb HP and Lenovo laptops for less than $400. >$900 for student laptops is a big no-go. I guess if you were a bigger University, but I cannot see it for the average school.
protomyth··on You don’t want to be on Cloudflare’s naughty list
That's basically what happens in most cases.
protomyth··on You don’t want to be on Cloudflare’s naughty list
Using a group's service so you don't suffer from the actions of that group? I've heard that pitch before. Francis Ford Coppola made some movies about one of those groups.
protomyth··on Ask HN: Does Hacker News still do in person meet ups?
Probably more likely than North Dakota. :)
protomyth··on Ask HN: Does Hacker News still do in person meet ups?
I'm actually surprised there doesn't seem to be a Minneapolis/ St. Paul MN contingent. The Twin Cities had a lot of interest groups in the 90's.
