prohor··on Angular 2 Final Released
I'm not comparing against Angular (which in v1 is known not to be super fast) just between browsers. I was mainly looking at https://vaadin.github.io/gwt-polymer-elements/demo/#gwt/Java... . It uses a lot of widgets on one page. Take a look how on loads in Chrome, Firefox, Edge (refresh to minimize network effects). I didn't go really deep in it, but first look was that lots of time was used in registering custom elements. Sure, here it is wrapped in GWT (which would be my case), but it doesn't seem to add much, rather the fact it loads all widgets from Polymer.
prohor··on Angular 2 Final Released
Polymer and Angular 2.0 seems to have a lot concepts in common and I don't fully understand why they are going to compete, given they come from the same source. But for me it seems that Polymer nowhere picked up as Angular.

When it comes to performance it is great in Chrome. In other browsers not so. I hope v2 will be much better once they can get rid of the compatibility layer for other ever-green browsers.

prohor··on Ask HN: Is web programming a series of hacks on hacks?
The first two paint points are perfectly solved by GWT[1]. But for some reason it isn't picked up by web community, even though you can still make really cool web apps with it.

prohor··on Ask HN: How have you left Google's services?
Take a look on https://www.privacytools.io/ , which lists alternatives in various categories. It doesn't include photos from your list though.
prohor··on How contactless cards are still vulnerable to relay attack
Just add an e-ink display (like this: https://plastc.com/) that shows the transaction value and a button to approve on card. Only then the card would sign the transaction. Seems simple.
prohor··on Vizceral Open Source
Dynatrace does I think what you describe. It is on various levels - between services, hosts, processes (on different hosts too) and AWS zones.

prohor··on Contextual Identities on the Web
Exactly, I also want to have private browsing but with persistent history. I'm using Self-Destructing Cookies [1] for that; you can also white-list some domains there for eg. keep me logged in. But would love to have the container as you describe for that.

prohor··on Rsnapshot: filesystem snapshot utility based on rsync
You might like BoxBackup, but unfortunately not very active project now: https://www.boxbackup.org/
prohor··on Rsnapshot: filesystem snapshot utility based on rsync
I like also rdiff-backup which makes a mirror of a directory + reverse diffs, in case you need to move in time. http://www.nongnu.org/rdiff-backup/

Duplicity is also another tools that uses rsync algorithm to find and stores differences, but makes unfortunately incremental backups. On upside - it can store backup on anything that you can push files (FTP, S3, IMAP, ...) and it is the only rsync-related solution with encryption I could find http://duplicity.nongnu.org/

There is also a very nice full solution - BoxBackup, which unfortunately looks not very active now. It is continuous backup, with block level de-duplication, client-side encryption. Unfortunately uses its own format, where I strongly prefer to have things more standard, so you can manually fix them if something goes wrong. https://www.boxbackup.org/

prohor··on Rsnapshot: filesystem snapshot utility based on rsync
The de-duplication in this case is achieved by hardlinks of unchanged files between snapshots. This means, deduplication is only on file level, so even an append makes a new copy.

I've been looking for an rsync-based tool with encryption, but really couldn't find any. There is that uses rsync way of finding differences & keeps change log, but this is in fact normal full-snapshot & incremental backups: http://duplicity.nongnu.org/

prohor··on MitM Attack against KeePass 2’s Update Check
How about those who donate? Aren't they kind of customers? And what would you say if Linux updates could be easily changed with MitM?
prohor··on Amazon Reports Surge in Profit
Google indeed seems the strongest competitor now for AWS, but there are far more providers who compete - see a comparison: https://www.cloudorado.com/ . We just need to choose them to avoid monopoly or at least oligopoly.
prohor··on Russian photographer matches random people with social network photos
So, you can no longer assume being anonymous when walking down the street. If your random photo is matched with your profile, you can be basically fully identified anywhere. With all those cameras everywhere, you could be fully tracked.
prohor··on Privacy – Forget Your Credit Card
Does it work if I live outside US?
prohor··on Show HN: Station307 – Stream files between cURL, Wget and/or browser
Very nice. I've bookmarked it.

By the way - there was another similar service recently, but stores files: https://transfer.sh/ , https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11322007

prohor··on RegExp Lookbehind Assertions
I use regex quite often and I'm happy we have it now more powerful in Chrome. Though, what is so painful in regex is all those flavors of it. I with it was standardized across all languages / implementations.
prohor··on RegExp Lookbehind Assertions
I usually use look ahead negation to make tests that string doesn't match regex.
prohor··on Google and Red Hat announce cloud-based scalable file servers
How this availability will be implemented then? I can install it now, so it is already available for me. Will they provide a service like Amazon Elastic File System? Or there will be some pre-configured images?
prohor··on Google and Red Hat announce cloud-based scalable file servers
I'm not sure what is announced here. Gluster FS is for few years already (version 3.6 now), while the article doesn't mention that there is started any managed service based on it. It is more like reminder that you can set up distributed file system on your cloud servers using Gluster. Not even any step-by-step tutorial how to do that.
prohor··on Show HN: AllOrigins – Pull content from any page as JSON via API
Convenient. Can the sample endpoint (http://allorigins.pw/get?url=) be used by pages or do I need to deploy it myself?

How about CORS version instead of JSONP?

prohor··on Introducing Apex – Serverless Architecture with AWS Lambda
Exactly! PaaS was exactly the thing which supposed to allow developer focus on application code, instead of infrastructure. And actually App Engine is exactly working for me this way.
prohor··on I ended up paying $150 for a single 60GB download from Amazon Glacier
For cheap storage there is also Oracle Archive Storage with 0.1c/GB ($0.001/GB). They have horrible cloud management system though.

prohor··on Lazy Authentication Still the Norm
You are lucky enough to be in a country where PayPal offers 2FA at all. For unknown reason 2FA is available in very few countries, while majority cannot use it. I talked with their call center, but I was under strong impression that the lady didn't even understand why I need such thing.
prohor··on Ask HN: How should browser API be dropped?
Well, I'm not sure if we talk about the same thing here. It is not my API, but API defined by W3C and implemented by Chrome browser. It was just dropped without any notice.
prohor··on Ask HN: How should browser API be dropped?
Just to add sugar to it - check the list of usage statistics and scroll down, to see how many APIs is endangered by distinction:

prohor··on Airbus proposes new drop-in airplane “cabin modules” to speed up boarding
Yesterday's discussion on that subject: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10627873
prohor··on Airbus Patents Detachable Cabins to Cut Plane Boarding Times
Take a look on study below, with simulations of various types of boarding. Surprisingly random boarding is faster than back-to-front. Faster is outside seats first then middle. And the fastest in fact is outside first and back-to-front, but that would be difficult to force people.

prohor··on Scala.js has a new website
For those from Java world wanting to write client-side, there is obviously also GWT[1] and another interesting option is TeaVM[2]. Interesting part of TeaVM is that it translates bytecode, so I guess it could do Scala as well. But I've never used it, so cannot recommend really.

prohor··on Sigma.js: a JavaScript library for graph drawing
This also also very nice list of Graph libraries done by the NGraph author. The best part of it is, that you can test each of the libraries with various types of graphs and sizes (both configurable):
