program··on LLVM 3.1 released
Collections subscripting operator [] and boxed C strings are life-savers. Instantiating obj-c object is always a pain cause the syntax is very verbose, expecially for NSString:

  NSString *s = [NSString stringWithCString:"hello" encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding];
  NSString *s = @("hello");
it's 11 characters vs 67. Now what I really, really miss is the implementation of the NSString concatenation operator. stringWithFormat isn't always the answer nor appendString. Please forgive me if you find that my idea is silly:

  // String concatenation
  NSString *s = @+(@"hello ", @"world");
Or maybe some concise dictionary operators.

  NSDictionary *d1 = @{ @"first":@"Hello", @("second"):@"World" };
  NSDictionary *d2 = @{ @"third":@"Greetings" };

  NSDictionary *cd = @|(d1, d2); // Dictionary merge
  NSDictionary *id = @&(d1, d2); // Dictionary intersect
  NSDictionary *dd = @^(d1, d2); // Dictionary difference
program··on VLC has been downloaded over a billion times
I know that it's a fallacious statistic but here is the VLC all time OS market share (rounded):

Windows: 89.38%

OS X: 10.27%

Other: 0.35%

program··on Easel.ly - A nice HTML 5 infographics editor
Put on:

1) support for characters outside ASCII (at least latin1, accented letters do appear as a space)

2) better copy/paste. Right now it has problems (FF12)

3) Custom page size

and it will be an excellent tool. Keep up the good work.

program··on WWDC 2012 (June 11 - 15)
I see a bunch of CPUs. I predict some upgrades on the iMac line.

Also Rounded Rects are everywhere, http://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?story=Round_Rects_Are_E...

program··on Retina.js: Retina graphics for your website
This is the same approach used by Apple. If you go on apple.com and you run:

  AC.Retina._devicePixelRatio = 2
  new AC.Retina
you will see several requests such as:

  HEAD http://www.apple.com/home/images/ipad_title_2x.png
program··on C Finally Gets A New Standard
1990 C90

2000 C99

2011 C11

so, if this is the trend expect a new C standard in 2022.

program··on Internet Explorer market share surges, as IE 9 wins hearts and minds
IE6 (and XP) still dominate in China and there are approximately 420 million Internet users. Over 90% of software is pirated, most Chinese users never connect to Windows Update or even upgrading their web browser. Also a lot of Chinese websites have been built to work with IE6 only (e.g. banks).

program··on Stop distributing .doc files
In Italy the .doc/.docx format (and all othe Office formats) is widely used. At my IT company the file format used in the CV is the starting point for the selection of a candidate. .doc/.docx is the worst choice. We prefer a .pdf file and as an addition we look at the "producer" metadata (just in case).
program··on Chrome beats IE market share for one day
WebKit is open source and is developed by Apple and other companies such as KDE, Google, Nokia, Samsung and others.
program··on Apple's domains
the perl script is broken in all other sites as well. E.g. http://imac.com/init
program··on Why is the DOS path character "\"?
This article remind me of my first days of C coding and the problems generated with escaped "c:\haracters in strings".

After years I still think that the use of forward slash is the worst decision ever. At least Apple chose ":" on Mac OS classic.

program··on How Not To Sell Software in 2012
Addendum:

1) Don't ask me why/when/where/how I will use my brand-new software

2) Don't force me to "try" other software just because I bought one

3) Don't force me to give you informations that are not strictly correlated with the purchase

program··on Windows 8 won’t kill the desktop, but don’t worry — we’re still screwed
> Calling the above “ugly” isn’t fair. It’s not ugly. It’s what happens when Ugly and Stupid get drunk and make a baby inside the Fukushima safety zone

It seems to me that the article is full of hate. The author really miss the Start Menu.

program··on Objective-C literals for NSDictionary, NSArray, and NSNumber
Objective-C is a proper superset of C89, C99 and K&R C. You can specify it at compile time --std.
program··on What is the mystery “entertainment device” Google is testing?
I bet that it's the Android@home home automation introduced one year ago. Or a console which will bring Android Apps to your TV.
program··on XaoS.js - a real-time fractal zoomer
I've seen tons of different Mandelbrot implementations in Javascript and Processing.js (it's a pretty popular example of the ImageData object) and I can say that this particular one is indeed fast considering that is using 128 iterations on a relatively big canvas.
program··on 3 Ways I Would Improve Hacker News
Here is a bunch of cosmetic changes:

1) Include the second level domain on link preview next to title (e.g. plus.google.com)

2) Include some sort of graphics that link a comment response to original comment. It's very difficult to follow a conversation with a lot of comments. The Slashdot vertical lines are an elegant example.

3) Use CSS media queries. I find HN very difficult to navigate using embedded devices. The font, the vote arrow and the margins aree too small.

program··on Bootstrap 2.0, From Twitter
I'm very happy to see this new version. I have followed the 2.0-wip branch since the very beginning. At my company we use Bootstrap for a lot of different project as a barebone WordPress template with few additions in order to handle the semantic classes (and id) generated by WordPress.
program··on Id Software Open Source releases on GitHub
It will be interesting to see how id (or Carmack himself) will react to eventual pull requests. As far as I know the code has been frozen once released as Free Software on id FTP server.
program··on Wat

   $ php -r '::'
   Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM
Wat
program··on Show HN: We made an addictive way to browse pictures on reddit
Put on bigger controls for embedded devices that have no keyboard.
program··on AES on the iPhone is Broken by Default

  "a serious documentation flaw"
The all-zeroes IV is documented in the official CCCrypt(3cc) man page at:

http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/System...

this does not exonerate Apple having made a wrong choice of design.

program··on Most Important Open Source Projects of 2011
"So to judge importance, I looked at projects that are influential, gaining in popularity, and/or technical standouts in new areas"

So put WebKit on the list. If the growth continues, total usage of WebKit based browsers will surpass 50% by the end of 2012.

program··on ECMAScript 6 looks promising
I don't think that there is the need for a new character. The problem here is that JS has automatic semicolon insertion. This:

  var a = "abc
   def";
generate a "unterminated string literal" syntax error cause a semicolon is inserted after abc. Why not using C/C++/ObjC syntax?

  var a = "a very "
   "very long string";
program··on ECMAScript 6 looks promising
Using the ` (backquote) character for multiline strings isn't a wise choice (probably inherited from Go) cause it's difficult to reach that character on non-english keyboard layout. In the italian layout it's alt+\ or alt+9 on the Mac but you can't reach it using Windows; you need to press alt+96.
program··on http://(Type any keyword here).jpg.to
This is a little bookmarklet for you. Select some text in a page then run it. It will open a new window {selected text}.jpg.to.

   javascript:(function(){var A='';if(window.getSelection) A=window.getSelection().toString();else if(document.getSelection) A=document.getSelection().toString();else if(document.selection) A=document.selection.createRange().text;A=A.replace(/\s+/,'-');if(A===''||!/^[a-z0-9_\-]+$/i.test(A))A='try-again';window.open('http://'+encodeURIComponent(A.toLowerCase())+'.jpg.to');}());
not tested at all.
program··on COMEFROM
In the original COBOL specification there is the infamous "ALTER X TO PROCEED TO Y" statement which modify a GOTO X in a GOTO Y.
program··on How to forcibly eject a CD/DVD from a MacBook Air USB SuperDrive
"Of course, you stop worrying about that and wonder how the cable has managed to fray on this barely used drive:"

This is because Apple cables miss the so called "strain relief".

http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/hvuhg/apple_why/c1yuah...

it is a design choice.

program··on The IOCCC is back
It's been a very long time and I'm very glad to see a new IOCCC. I clearly remember the day I read about (and successfully booted) the 2004 "best of the show" entry.

program··on The Real Reason Italy Sucks at the Startup Game
I am italian, I have a full-time job in an IT private company, I own an house and I know why you can't create a startup in Italy: money, burocracy and taxes.

In Italy banks or companies will never invest money in your startup if you can't cover at least all the money you need in 4/5 years. If you dare to found a new company and you fail then your life is destroyed. You are tagged as "cattivo pagatore" (bad payer) and you will never obtain money in form of loans.

Italy is a very bad place if you want to make something innovative.
