progfix··on EU mandates replaceable batteries by 2027 (2023)
What do you mean exactly with censorship?
progfix··on Differential Growth Addon for Blender
Jason Webbs blog post (which is linked in the github ReadMe) explains the math really well.
progfix··on LibrePythonista allows running IPython code in a LibreOffice spreadsheet
The design looks very much AI generated.
progfix··on Orca: WebAssembly Apps Without the Web
Can you run JVM or CLR apps in the browser?

progfix··on Giant 'sand battery' holds a week's heat for a whole town
Civil engineering in general is more advanced in Europe. The oil crisis in the 1970 and the subsequent use of thermal insulation made "Bauphysik" (building physics) an integral part of the planing process. In the US you just rely on more heating/cooling power instead.

Just as an example: >=16cm thermal insulation + heat pump or solar thermal energy + double or triple pane windows have been standard for new single family homes since at least 2005 in Austria.

progfix··on The underground world of hobby tunneling
Building regulations exist for thousand of years and for good reasons ...

lol

progfix··on 2023 Word of the Year is "enshittification"
"en" =/= "ent"
progfix··on Pipeworld: Spreadsheet Dataflow Computing (2021)
Those text boxes act like spreadsheet cells - which means you can reference them and use their data in other boxes.
progfix··on My personal C coding style as of late 2023
Usually if it is too costly, then you pass it via a pointer.
progfix··on Microsoft to stop forcing Windows 11 users into Edge in EU countries
Microsoft thinks this is okay because Google did the same thing with Chrome on the Google start page.

I remember a coworker asking me what Chrome is, because "his computer" keeps telling him to install it.

progfix··on Show HN: Hacker News for AI News
I would like a hacker news without AI news :)
progfix··on So Long, Twitter and Reddit
You can also follow hashtags which for me is much more interesting than following people.
progfix··on Why does email development have to suck? – Explaining all the <tr>'s and <td>'s
Why don't you send PDFs?
progfix··on Discovery: Metals can heal themselves
You are wrong. I work in the construction industry and the term is commonly used and understood. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-healing_material
progfix··on Show HN: PDF Differ
The black and white mode doesn't look very useful. Check out how Autodesk is visualising changes. They use three colours: blue=only in first pdf, red=only in second pdf, black=in both pdfs.

progfix··on /u/spez is right about feudalism and that's why Reddit is doomed
Paid mods will work for the big subreddits, but what about all the smaller ones. Will paid mods have the knowledge or passion to run a subreddit for a niche topic? To promote them or keep them interesting?
progfix··on The problem with federated web apps
After a quick internet search I found some straight forward tutorials about moving instances.

So you don't loose followers/follows but can't move posts (but they are kept alive as long as the old instance is active). That is IMO not that bad at all.

Maybe it is just a matter of time we get full account moving, I don't see why that would be technically impossible to do.

progfix··on Twitter Is DDOSing Itself
Did you forget that newspapers exist?
progfix··on The EU’s fight for user-replaceable smartphone batteries
Why do you say that? There are many devices that are waterproof and have replaceable parts (cameras, watches, ...).
progfix··on The EU’s fight for user-replaceable smartphone batteries
> Why change the device design to make battery user-replaceable when I can bring it to the repair shop?

You'd rather go to a repair shop and pay a service fee for something that you can probably do in a couple of minutes at home?

progfix··on The EU’s fight for user-replaceable smartphone batteries
I did a 10 second internet search and found earbuds that have a replaceable battery and are not bigger than usual ones.

progfix··on Companies to publish salary ranges in job adverts under new EU rules
In Austria companies are already mandated to post salaries for job descriptions. Some companies are very vague about it (here is the mininum, based on your experience you can negotiate,...), some are very clear about it. For me it helped filtering out companies and saved me a lot of time.
progfix··on Show HN: Metallic UI component library (Metalmorphism)
Why is the button text white and barely readable?
progfix··on Japanese manhole mass production process [video]
I guess manufactories are just proud of what they are doing and want to show the world how it is done. That's what I got from going to factory tours myself when I have the opportunity.
progfix··on Citizen scientists report global rapid reductions in the visibility of stars
I noticed that streets with LED lamps are far less visible from far away than ones with old "orange" street lamps. I can't imagine them being worse in terms of light pollution.
progfix··on If you like startups you should love anti-trust
If your engine is better then they will buy it and shut you down. Or they will put 100x as much money into marketing as you have. Or they will hit you with law suits.

What I am trying to say is in practice big corporations have many ways to get rid of their competion. For them there is no need to be better.

progfix··on Microsoft tests 'upsells' of its products in Windows 11 sign-out menu
When you have no time you are more likely to accidently press that button.
progfix··on Microsoft tests 'upsells' of its products in Windows 11 sign-out menu
Who gives a shit about press when you have a quasi monopoly and people are dependent on your products.
