> Meanwhile the fund managers are the most conservative people imaginable and are far more interested in stable returns than making the world a better place, so the entities that have the resources for moonshots don't have the stones to actually attempt them.

You have actually given another premise to my argument. The world's resources (represented in paper money) is not being used to benefit the world, if fact, it's being used to lobby gov't to remove subsidies on renewable energy.

Feudal lords own the land just like today's capitalists (especially the whales) own capital.

Yes, the thought leaders in the eth community are indeed influential just like Linus Torvalds is to the Kernel project. But that doesn't mean you can't fork Linux should you disagree with him.

What you are saying is not a technical problem. But a problem in Human Society. Or even just an inherent due to it's novelty. This issue is present to almost anything that is not yet widely adapted.

With that said, giant evil mega corporations have grouped up to work on an 'enterprisy' version of Ethereum with a standard spec for interop. We're on a good track to get more 'thought leaders'.

Remember that the smart contract is committed to the blockchain and can never be changed.

Just like when you push your code to a git repo. It's guaranteed immutable, tamper proof. Data side is handled by appending to the blockchain as well. But this doesn't mean it's bug-free.

You have essentially a tamper proof Database with Stored Procedures that doesn't need DBAs. I imagine it as a giant growing BitTorrent file that is maintained (and rewarded) by many computers worldwide. Any tampering to this file, it's immediately detected via hashing (just like in BitTorrent).

The only way to break this is by branching out like you do in git. But in Blockchain, you will have to convince those computers to maintain your fork. And on this note, a Blockchain is technically not controlled by 1 entity, it is the choice of every individual blockchain maintainers (aka miners).

profalseidol··on Chinese developers fear the tech war will cost them access to GitHub
Wait what? How would you lose access to Github? Ain't there a tone of ways to get something from the Internet?
profalseidol··on Ask HN: What overlooked class of tools should a self-taught programmer look into
> There are downsides to FP as well.

I've seen Java 8 functional stuff get unreadable.

But other than that, is there any other concrete downside?

For using Pure Functions, I don't see any downside to this. Aside from it being impossible to use for outside the program side-effects like IO to device.

profalseidol··on China, Leverage, and Values
Yeah, they should follow the steps of NSA.
profalseidol··on Amazon Shareholders Rejected Employees' Call to Respond to Climate Change
Majority Shareholders are practically our Modern Feudal Lords. The only difference is that there is a government which was paid in blood as result from past revolutions and uprisings. A government that is also being taken over by Modern Aristocrats.
profalseidol··on Ask HN: What overlooked class of tools should a self-taught programmer look into
I've been using static methods in java that follows the pure function way, it proved very easy to maintain even to those who inherited my code later on.
profalseidol··on Reform capitalism or face revolution
Telling is a whole lot different than doing something about it. And definitely not investing (and even giving advice about it) into Capitalism doesn't help.

But I guess, it's not replace but "reform". He probably wants to secure his spoils.

profalseidol··on A Conspiracy to Kill IE6
Pretty sure there was enough developers whom hated JavaScript. What happened is that made more if it.

A reality that we would still be supporting IE6 today because so many businesses still use it seems realistic to me. Maybe we would have developed a facade for it..

This brave actions of the OldTuber saved us a ton of effort.

Hopefully somebody from Oracle sneak in Clojure in the JVM!

If only farming payed like in tech, I would happily do switch careers. Unfortunately this not how we human beings decided to run our society. Hopefully our French yellow vest comrades can give us revolutionary improvements again like they did in past.

profalseidol··on Ask HN: How to deal with a senior colleague who acts like he's boss?
Personally, for readability purpose, this sounds a like a good idea. It is indeed (at least for me) harder to read a condition that has negation:

if(!some-predicate)

Maybe it's because you have to do the negation mentally.

But more ideally, it should be done with polymorphism or similar rather than using if..else.

> Amazon has literally won everywhere else in the world.

Amerikan exceptionalism! In my country, Amazon doesn't even exist. And we use several different ones. The song "We're all living in Amerika" doesn't apply anymore you know?

Yet the company first mentioned does it for free, lol:

I've checked Datastreamer.io for 5 seconds, I don't see any link to their repo. If not "open source" then what does "open" mean?

You have answered it. Free patent, GPL or not, you'd have this problem. And it's even worse on "normal" cases.

profalseidol··on Why I Switched from Python to Clojure (2016)
I'd rather work with Clojure than the monstrosity we make with our 30 years of experience.

Sure you can get things done and ignore the maintenance horror later.

Anyways, in the 30 years we at least steadily transfer features from Lisp.

profalseidol··on Google removed my ads-free app for “deceptive ads”
Goodluck!
profalseidol··on Why I Switched from Python to Clojure (2016)
One could say the same for almost all language. One can abuse java reflection and do all kinds of unreadable magic and code generation.

If I can get one thing, I'd probably say practice in immutability. This simplifies a lot of things, even in java. In Clojure, immutability is first-class.

profalseidol··on Why I Switched from Python to Clojure (2016)
Almost anything (if not all) requires one to put in years of practice before one is adept. "a" non-trivial "personal" project probably won't cut it.

Comparing that to your 30 years practice of XML is not at all useful.

profalseidol··on Why People Don't Get Wealthy
I hope my comment is not too late:

Have a look at Mondragon Cooperatives. It's a real life large scale implementation of Woker-owned Cooperatives. Not perfect but it does show a lot of the good possibilities.

Back in 2008 when the regular Capitalism crash happens where we plebs payed capitalists:

Mondragon: Spain's giant co-operative where times are hard but few go bust:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/mar/07/mondragon-spai...

TL;DR of this article - Workers of Mondragon's Washing Machine factory got redundant due to recession lowering demand for their products. Instead of lay-offs, they compensated by lowering wages of managers (note that they have a rule where there is a max ratio of salary from lowest salary). Then offered these workers to retrain for free with commute allowance. Or offered early retirement with complete benefits and cash out their ownership.

In general, the Theory of Value makes sense to me:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_value_(economics)

Capitalism doesn't just take a huge cut in what we deserve. But has also stripped us of our humanity.
