profalseidol··on What Happened to Rt.com?
No matter what is your stance. It is always important to listen to both sides, and exercise your critical thinking.

RT's YouTube channel has been blocked in my country just today. I thought the west was all about freedom? (Not that I believe that, especially as they torture Julian Assange and commit horrible atrocities against Palestinians)

> Languages that focus on "easy to write" are a trap

Reminds me of that time when my company abused Scala Implicits, possible because one of it's libraries for mapping scala to relational database had examples of it.

Regarding re-usability. Does that imply well defined interfaces and private scopes? Does that eventually lead us to Pure functions? Afaik, pure func has maybe the highest ease/simplicity for reuse. Happy to be hear your thoughts.

Libya got destroyed when they wanted gold for oil. At least China has established yuan for oil for their trade with Russia.

> I am always surprised at how long we have kept this advantage.

With the amount spent with US Military (more than all the next 9 countries combined), not surprised. Military bases everywhere, wars everywhere etc.

profalseidol··on Adobe deactivates all Venezuelan accounts
We should've listen to RMS about Free Software huh?

"dropping taxes for the biggest companies and lowering spending on infrastructure and public works" = repulsive

"green tech investment and high tech public transport systems" = actually helps the people

Start by fixing misinformation about what is the PRC and the "democractic" US.

profalseidol··on Information operations directed at Hong Kong
Ain't government is comprised of corporate owners? President. Then there's lobbying/bribing. Create/participate in wars. Sell weapons to the human rights respecting Saudi. And when corporations die, they take the people's money.

That's beyond giving me a choice. Lols.

profalseidol··on Information operations directed at Hong Kong
You do know that Hong Kong was really part of China right? It was taken by the British Empire in 1842 by destroying China in the First Opium War. When the British finally gave it back to China in 1997, a lot of the non-chinese moved out of HK.

What I'm trying to emphasize is that "Hong Kongers" and Jackie Chan are Chinese.

profalseidol··on Information operations directed at Hong Kong
Yeah, time to get Julian Assange and Snowden back to America (gitmo)! The land of the free (for non-natives)!
profalseidol··on I started an online subscription business from Malaysia
Tell that to the millions who choose to be born in the slums. Then there is also the fact that we are not equally the same upon birth. Everyone has different traits. I suspect that when you really weigh in the factors, a lot of the result we get is caused by a lot simply being at the right time in the right place.

Coupling is not bad in itself. Depends on what you want to achieve. There's likely always a trade-off.
profalseidol··on Why do developers at Google consider Agile development to be nonsense? (2016)
There's this course in pluralsight that talks about two orgs that promote scrum. The other one seems to be giving out the wrong ideas. I think it's this one (copied from wikipedia):

In 2002, Schwaber with others founded the Scrum
Alliance[18] and set up the Certified Scrum accreditation
series. Schwaber left the Scrum Alliance in late 2009 and
founded Scrum.org which oversees the parallel Professional
    Scrum accreditation series.[19]
I think it was Scrum Alliance that's giving out ideas like Burndown chart is required in scrum.

DemocracyNow[1] is a good one. 100% free. Noam Chomsky is a regular guest here.

I wonder how they make money.

Checked wikipedia:

Democracy Now Productions, the independent nonprofit
organization which produces Democracy Now!, is funded
entirely through contributions from listeners, viewers,
and foundations such as the Ford Foundation,[failed
verification] Lannan Foundation, J.M. Kaplan Fund,[4]
[5][6][unreliable source?] and does not accept
  advertisers, corporate underwriting or government
  funding.[7]
The remark from Bill Clinton is a fun bit:

Clinton defended his administration's policies and charged
Goodman with being "hostile and combative".[51]

Maybe Brave and BAT. I believe they already have the system up and running but not fully.

Add to that, the Fortune 500 list - for the first time ever, it is not dominated anymore by US Companies. At least that is what I've heard from RT news.

profalseidol··on Ask HN: What people skills do you wish you learned earlier in your career?
One advice I've read/heard is to make sure to give everyone a chance to give his/her input and address any concerns. It should be done individually so everyone has space.

Should a decision be made that was not favorable to one individual, at least it was discussed and was given the chance to give his/her opinion.

profalseidol··on Ask HN: What people skills do you wish you learned earlier in your career?
Might be a good idea to find a place with lots of PhD folks.

I think I know what you mean since I prefer to talk to friends who are genuinely interested in programming and not just a job. Colleagues who are just here for the job I still talk to them but with other topics which I usually learn from as well - as long as you are willing to listen despite what you may think of them.

profalseidol··on Ask HN: What people skills do you wish you learned earlier in your career?
Good advice. This is what should be said in place of "effective communication".
profalseidol··on Faster, cheaper, and better: A story of breaking a monolith
Can you view Microservices in the same light as multiple companies? Just like when your monolith calls on a third party API that does the payment for you - ain't that also a microservices that happens to involves 2 different individual companies?

It's cool to see a congressman who has this level of software dev knowledge.
profalseidol··on Facebook, Libra, and the Long Game
I'd like to add. I think the 'open society' mentioned is simply not an opposite to 'closed society'. Imo, there is a big spectrum to how closed or open a society is.

How open a society is, are efforts mostly paid in blood by the plebians. Those who look down on others and want control are the ones who probably makes society more 'closed'.

Money is only a tool. A way to facilitate immoral exchange of earth's finite resources + human labour.

My leftist ideals would say, we shouldn't deny a fellow human access to food or a vacation just because he doesn't have anything in exchanges. Especially today that we have a problem of overbundance, and we are not even optimizing our production, but for profit.

The Anthropologist David Greaber in his book, we can observe this human compassion when in the park when some stranger kid is in danger, maybe drowning, we do not hesitate for a sec to help out, and we don't ask for anything in return.

profalseidol··on Facebook, Libra, and the Long Game
Lol, we a major consumer bank here that have "system error" and everyone's payday salary is mixed up. I imagine some miserable dev tasked to run a batch script and forgot to do some steps.

For sure these banks wouldn't use their own hardware, but hire a new team, new hardware etc.

profalseidol··on Facebook, Libra, and the Long Game
As others have explained, it's arguable that banks cannot do this. Though I am curious if there some way to outlaw cryptocurrency, possible go as far as impose sanctions to other countries.

Also, would like to note that Bitcoin can also function as store of value just like Gold.

Any news about Lightning? Is that running live now?

profalseidol··on Ask HN: What are the signs that you have a great manager?
And when something bad happens because of this rushed code, they'll tell you, "you have to do more testing", make sure quality is not compromised. "We can do automated tests, we can do them as long as it doesn't eat up developer time".

Makes me think that in a consultancy business, everything hinges on getting the customer to fund your development properly. Ask too much and you'll lose the contract to a competitor.

Any thoughts on this?

profalseidol··on Ask HN: What are the signs that you have a great manager?
Certainly when your manager knows that estimates mean estimates, not deadlines. But I guess that's the dilemma in false-agile fixed price big ball of mud consultancy business, you have to give a commitment.

Would appreciate any comments on this topic.

profalseidol··on A language under attack: China’s campaign to sever the Uighur tongue
Is this even on-topic for Hacker News?

Although looking at the guideline, it seems to be dependent on the reader:

[1]Hacker News Guidelines

What to Submit

On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.

Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon. Videos of pratfalls or disasters, or cute animal pictures. If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.
