procinct··on Inflation is wiping out wage increases for many workers
Interesting, in NZ you have an interest rate you pay to the bank for your mortgage that has to be renewed every few years. This interest rate is definitely impacted by inflation. Does the US/where you are from not have a similar system?
procinct··on Firefox is the 45th result when searching for “Firefox” on Windows Store
It also says the opposite if you google vi :)
procinct··on 'The way my boss monitored me at home was creepy'
Most likely they are just always connected while doing their work and so don’t bother to disconnect when slacking off either.
procinct··on Ask HN: How would you, a software engineer, spec out a new MacBook Pro?
I had a 2015 XPS 13 and it’s mobo died. It was disappointing but lead to one of the best support experiences of my life with a technician coming to my apartment to fix it for me.

Then the mobo died again 2 years later now out of warranty :(

My 2015 MacBook Pro is still going strong though :)

procinct··on Android 12
I had high end Android devices up to Android 7 and still experienced lagging and stuttering. It was clear there were optimisation issues with the software that couldn’t be solved by throwing hardware at.
procinct··on Ask HN: Has web development become insane or am I stuck in my ways?
Generally I believe it's done for encapsulation between teams. That way, each team can own their code without any fear of another team being able to break anything provided they all work to their contracts.

If you can perform a join to get the data yourself, nothing is stopping anyone from circumventing your API that is intended for fetching the data or by making breaking changes to the single database that your code relies on.

But yes, trivial joins is effectively the trade off for this encapsulation and can mean other services have to collect their own versions of data from services which means you now have eventual consistency.

procinct··on There are no results for tank man
Interesting, I’m getting results. Pretty much the exact results I would expect as well. Have they fixed it or is this a regional thing?
procinct··on Can Apple change ads?
Maybe if you’re referring to regular phishing sure, but spear phishing is specifically designed so it won’t go to your junk email and will look like something made for them personally, there won’t be any spelling mistakes, it will have been sent from a likely email source, it will most likely contain some personal information. The right phish at the right time could catch just about anyone out.

There’s a great talk at Black Hat about how Stripe trains staff against these sorts of phishing campaigns and these are highly technical people and they still click the links. https://youtu.be/Z20XNp-luNA

procinct··on How Lucky Is Too Lucky in Minecraft?
The game has an actual ending. The point of the speed run is to get to that which can be done in well less than an hour by the people good at it.
procinct··on System76 Launch Keyboard
Probably doesn’t quite solve your problem exactly but these days you can get hotswappable keyboards that allow you to take the full switch off without needing to get your soldering iron out. You won’t be able to literally wash it but it should make cleaning a fair bit easier I imagine.
procinct··on Covid-19 Was 'A Preventable Disaster,' WHO-Ordered Report Says
If you are wondering why people thought the virus was important despite the “low” death rate you only need to look at India right now. Or Italy before it. When it floods a medical system to the point of collapse things become very dangerous.
procinct··on The handshake emoji is more complicated than you might think

procinct··on Ask HN: Pros and Cons of Switching from Linux to M1 MacBook
Why advise against iTerm?
procinct··on The “Granny Knot”
Doesn’t it still produce the same knot as the standard shoe tie knot? I thought it was just a faster method?
procinct··on Android's new Bluetooth stack rewrite (Gabeldorsh) is written with Rust
What’s interesting is the iPhone Bluetooth experience with Apple products is excellent. I remember my partner used to have an Android wear watch for her Android phone and it was constantly disconnecting and having to be disconnected/reconnected to fix issues. When I got my Apple Watch, I couldn’t believe how smooth the experience was. To the point where if you didn’t know it ran off Bluetooth you would think it is some new protocol. Similar experience with AirPods as well.
procinct··on The reason the local mall is failing (2018)
I’m not from the USA but the statement makes perfect sense to me. I’m not quite sure what you imply with your point, that everyone where you are from lives “downtown” or that people where you’re from can always just walk to an equivalent.
procinct··on Ask HN: What's one thing you would change at work to increase your productivity?
Interesting, what would you prefer to use? Email?
procinct··on Docker, Django, Traefik, and IntercoolerJS: My go-to stack for building a SaaS
Venv is great for keeping dependencies separate but if your local machine doesn’t have the same version of Python as your server then you’ll need pyenv.
procinct··on Creating my awesome Windows 10 dev setup
What do you find is so much better in WSL2 vs Mac? I find when I’m using WSL2 I feel more like I’m using 2 computers since they have the different file systems (you can’t just git clone into your windows file system from WSL for example) Whereas with Mac, it’s all one system and it’s all still Unix. The rest of Mac vs Windows seems like it could be up for debate (last few Mac updates have made it feel a lot less polished) but from a purely terminal experience I’ve found Mac to be so much better since it’s all just one system. I’m switching to Windows soon so I’m really curious, what’s your workflow for dev with WSL? For example, where do you keep your repos? What editor do you use? That sort of thing.
procinct··on Facebook to staff: Avoid company-branded clothing for own safety
While trying to read the article, a graphic video of a lady having earwax extracted started autoplaying. I don't think I've ever been so put off from an article so quickly.
procinct··on The M1 MacBook Air is the best computer I've ever owned
Generally this is surprising because the user bought the "Air" model instead of his usual "pro" model which is much more expensive. The impressive part here is that the air outperforms last years pro (according to the author) which is 3x the price.
procinct··on Covid vaccine: First ‘milestone’ vaccine offers 90% protection
I’m not saying anything with certainty. However, a lot of work has been expended in trying to contain this cluster and currently this is how it looks with the data we currently have.
procinct··on Covid vaccine: First ‘milestone’ vaccine offers 90% protection
Fortunately it sounds very contained. All cases (fewer than 15) were confined to a single location and there haven’t been any more detected since September. So most likely the mutation is now extinct.

It’s really just anything hackers would find interesting. Generally it spans tech and startups but also occasionally branches out to other sciences, art, politics and other subjects.

procinct··on Apple crushes one-man repair shop in Norway’s Supreme Court
I don't think so these days. I remember a little while ago, an update was pushed that bricked any phones with a third party screen (which I think included the finger print reader). The update was patched I believe but replacing the screen on a modern iPhone isn't as simple as replacing the glass anymore IIRC.
