pro_zac··on Peloton Is Spinning Faster Than Ever
As someone that used to ride outside 5 days a week, I've found riding indoors much easier to fit into my schedule. I can get in an hour on Zwift with only about 5 mins of getting geared up. Riding outside takes more time to prepare, and is tougher to schedule with dwindling daylight hours and less than ideal weather. I'm on a Tuesday & Thursday indoor, Saturday outdoor schedule now.

Peloton is far from the only option. I use Zwift for software and the BKool Smart Air with a Wahoo desk for equipment. Several companies are releasing full indoor bikes as well. Wahoo's Kickr Bike looks to be the front runner.

pro_zac··on Ask HN: How do you share/organize knowledge at work and life?
The takeaway here isn't to use OneNote, but to utilize a tool your team is comfortable with and will contribute to. Kudos for going against your own preferences to accommodate your team.
pro_zac··on Electric-Car Owners Hard Hit by California Power Shutdown
You could even put the fuel and generator in the back of your Tesla pickup and charge while you drive! Except I'm sure it won't drive while plugged in.
pro_zac··on Busting, Sony’s Ghostbusters AR Display (and a Little Sprite History)
I found the history of front-end vs back-end video processing especially interesting. We've become so used to doing everything on the front end and buffering it. New use cases in AR and VR are pushing engineers to change their approach.

The TT is the only reason I know of the Isle of Man. The current lap record is 16 minutes 42 seconds at an average speed of 135mph!

pro_zac··on Traffic apps turned L.A.’s neighborhoods into ”shortcuts”
Getting a speed bump added to your street is nearly impossible in LA. I lived on a street that badly needed one. It was a double length block paralleling Wilshire, so frequently used as a bypass with many speeding drivers. I looked up the process for requesting a speed bump. They only take so many requests per year, so I had to wait a few months for the request form to open up. I marked my calendar and when the date came it required that you get signatures from 50% of the residents on your street. Since my street was almost entirely apartment buildings and a double length block, this would have been hundreds of people. I gave up. I no longer live there.
pro_zac··on The Fry’s Era
Fry's always brings one story to mind for me. I used to work for a video game studio that was around the corner from a Fry's. So, we made frequent visits on our lunch breaks. I don't recall what the item was, but a coworker had purchased some electronic device of about $300. Probably an HD-DVD player or something based on the time. He ended up returning the item, but they would only give him store credit. So, he took a shopping cart to the electronic components aisle and proceeded to fill it with $300 worth of 5 and 10 cent resistors and other items. Went to checkout to spend his store credit. Then immediately went back to customer service to return his items. At that point, they decided they could make and exception and give him cash back!
pro_zac··on Why spiky shapes seem angry and round sounds are calming
Spiky shapes are like a dog showing its teeth or the fur standing up along its back. It's how animals and even plants get you to keep your distance.
pro_zac··on Let's build houses for people, not cars
On a related note, give this episode of Revisionist History a listen. It details the property tax loophole that has been taken advantage of by LA's country clubs for decades.

pro_zac··on Let's build houses for people, not cars
Council Tax is paid by the tenant. This does not discourage the wealthy from hording investment properties.
pro_zac··on List of selfie-related injuries and deaths
"A man was discovered with his phone and selfie stick at the bottom of a 100-foot cliff at Long Men waterfall in Zhejiang. Based on photographic evidence on his phone, local police speculated that he lost his footing while taking a selfie and fell to his death. It was not known when he died or how long his body had been there."

If they have photographic evidence from his phone shouldn't they know exactly how long he had been there?

pro_zac··on Ask HN: What keyboard do you use?
I also use the koolertron and I love it. I've had it for over a year. I had a Comfort Keyboard ErgoFlex for over 10 years before. My favorite part of split keyboards is reprogramming the left spacebar to backspace. Second best part is the keyboards move slightly day to day, so you aren't always in the same rigid position. As for the koolertron, it's main advantage is space saving. Many split keyboards take up a ton of desk space. This one does not. Plus it looks nice and the keys are really smooth.
pro_zac··on HDMI Capture and Analysis FPGA Project (2015)
This is doable with the right hardware. You'd need HDMI decoder and encoders and enough internal or external memory to buffer the resolution you are working with. (1080p = 1920 x 1080 x 3 = 5.9MB) You can probably avoid having to double buffer if it waits for vsync to switch modes.
pro_zac··on Zelda speedrunners are attacking the memory allocator
If you are at all interested in speed running, check out Summoning Salt's YouTube channel. It breaks down the world record progression of many classics games. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtUbO6rBht0daVIOGML3c8w

Another great channel is DotsAreCool. He explains how to manipulate the stack by placing turtle shells to skip to end credits. https://www.youtube.com/user/dotsarecool

Thank you! Actually explains what Spatial OS is, why it is used, and what changed in Unity’s ToS that affects it.
pro_zac··on Ask HN: Would a retro computing exhibition would be appealing to tourists?
I think it depends on the scale and ease of access. If it's located centrally near other tourist attractions, you will get more traffic. The only similar space I've been to is the National Museum of Computing [1] in Bletchley Park, England. It's not conveniently located, but it has such a large collection that it overcomes this. It is also part of the larger Bletchley Park attraction. 1 - http://www.tnmoc.org/
pro_zac··on Ask HN: What podcasts do you listen to regularly?
I'll have to check that out. Along the same lines are Lore and Criminal.
pro_zac··on Ask HN: What's a good history of technology book?
"The Idea Factory" while focused on Bell Labs, gives a pretty broad history of the birth of digital electronics and the start of everything from digital encoding of data to cellular networks and satellite communication.
pro_zac··on Ultimate Hacking Keyboard
After using the Comfort Keyboard system [1] for about 10 years, I made the switch to the Koolertron split keyboard [2]. I'm a huge fan of having the left spacebar programmed to backspace. It comes with extra key caps so you can make them all black.

pro_zac··on Air-conditioners do great good, but at a high environmental cost
That makes sense. So it is better to have freezers running in a store you are trying to heat up than one you are trying to cool. I had it completely backward.
pro_zac··on Air-conditioners do great good, but at a high environmental cost
Not totally on topic, but the thing that shocks me as ridiculously inefficient is huge freezer aisles in grocery stores in cold climates. They heat the store and then cool the freezers. Can't they just pump in outside air? Granted this wouldn't work year round in many places, but I feel like there is a better solution.
pro_zac··on Spotify hits 83M paying subscribers, more than double Apple Music’s 40M
I stumbled across a great Spotify feature the other day. If you right click on a playlist, there is an option called "Create similar playlist". I did this with a playlist I had created from a bunch of random tracks. It basically went through track by track and found similar songs. It was a bit hit or miss on some songs, but a neat feature. I think Spotify does a great job because they give you so many options for finding new music, but sometimes you have to dig into the UI to find them.
