Not totally on topic, but the thing that shocks me as ridiculously inefficient is huge freezer aisles in grocery stores in cold climates. They heat the store and then cool the freezers. Can't they just pump in outside air? Granted this wouldn't work year round in many places, but I feel like there is a better solution.
