pricechild··on The ‘Terminator’ of startups says he’s seeing two to four wind-downs a week
In the title, no.

The indication (more than normal) is given in the response to the first question, from which the article's title is taken:

> MP: We’re seeing two to four companies wind-down a week, which we’ve never seen before. I think more [investors] are taking the Sequoia Capital approach, meaning if something isn’t working, they’re moving on

edit: I think the parent was slightly edited but apologies if I simply misread.

pricechild··on Tears
They also say:

> Incidentally, Why Only Humans Weep by Ad Vingerhoets is the most useful book I've read about crying.

strongly implying it's not the only reading they've been doing!

pricechild··on Man jailed indefinitely for refusing to decrypt hard drives loses appeal
Truecrypt has hidden volumes.

There's also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubberhose_(file_system) and others: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deniable_encryption

Same general principle, you allegedly can't prove the hidden volumes exist unless you have the decryption key.

pricechild··on U.K. to Trigger Brexit March 29, Starting Two Years of Talks
Deciding what "brexit" means would be a start.
pricechild··on Lack of Oxford Comma Could Cost Maine Company Millions in Overtime Dispute
In this example, what does "for shipment" add to the meaning? I figure omitting that would make this far clearer.
pricechild··on Romania dictionary altered to thwart exam cheats
Apologies, thanks.
pricechild··on Romania dictionary altered to thwart exam cheats
> There were only nine searches for those two words in the hour before the exam started, but the number soon began to soar. In the final hour of the test there were 989 requests for their meaning

The article suggests you could likely count the number of innocent users affected on fingers & toes?

pricechild··on Isaac Asimov Laments the “Cult of Ignorance” in the United States (2016)
Yes, that's why I was confused.
pricechild··on Isaac Asimov Laments the “Cult of Ignorance” in the United States (2016)
I found this submission's title's date quite confusing. Yes it's an article from 2016 but discussing an essay from 1980!
pricechild··on Syncthing Usage Data
I think they're upset that the Network Administrator is blocking the system intentionally, not that it didn't make it through in the first place.

Don't upset your Network Administrators!

pricechild··on Syncthing Usage Data
That's interesting... so even the original 'master' client is treated equally? Other clients can decide to send/receive amongst themselves?

How do you deal with that?

pricechild··on Syncthing Usage Data
What's the drive or motivation behind people running syncthing discovery & relay servers?

Do they generally then run their own clients to only use their own servers?

With Tor I'm convinced over the "speech should be free, I'm making the world a better place" type argument.

With syncthing I'm incredibly impressed that this optional (but incredibly useful) infrastructure is being run by people for free since it doesn't quite make the world a better place in the same way? It just saves a bunch of other people setting up their own relay/discovery server on a cheap linode/aws instance?

Impressed!

What's the difference between this plain "hash" you're sending and a plain "password", other than intentions?
pricechild··on How the Maker of TurboTax Fought Free, Simple Tax Filing (2013)
I found https://uk.wikibudgets.org/w/united-kingdom-budget-2015 a few days ago.

I had assumed the defense budget was larger, it was a nice way of displaying the information.

pricechild··on Why Dentistry Is Separate from Medicine
Only a few years ago most "NHS Dentists" were full.

Just like that. No new patients. Tough.

It's only relatively recently that you'll find yourself driving past one with "Now accepting NHS patients" on big banners outside.

pricechild··on Solar-powered UK schools face an 800% tax increase
Surely nobody really gets away with that tactic? It won't fool the detector vans?
pricechild··on Unlock honest feedback by asking for “advice”
I don't think this has much at all to do with the words used.

Give it a few goes and eventually "advice" will become the bad word. People will realise that they're just getting the same response that dissuaded them originally from responding to requests for "feedback".

It's not the word you use, it's way you respond to what you receive.

My CEO currently asks for (and receives no) "questions".

pricechild··on Firefox 52 released
If it has been removed, a comment below you quoted the following which would likely explain it?

> Enhanced Sync to allow users to send and open tabs from one device to another.

pricechild··on The SELinux coloring book [pdf]
It's nice... but the suggestions are often terrible when they could be fixed properly with a bool or changing the context of a directory.

I sat the RHCE course/exam recently and the Red Hat trainer dealt with this in... amusing... ways.

Unfortunately, fixing things properly requires knowledge, if only of where to find the information. Thinking solely about file contexts, it's not easy to for example search them. e.g. "show me all contexts related to samba" so you can find the share rw label. (One of the RHEL 7.0 man pages suggests the nfs rw label which doesn't work, had to make a point of remembering that for the exam!) Everything's spread across selinux's man pages, service's man pages... ugh.

pricechild··on An Open Letter to the Uber Board and Investors
Every time I've gotten into an uber the first two questions have been "PriceChild? Where are you headed?"

I'm very sure they don't get the destination when choosing whether to accept the ride, and often don't seem to get it until you get in the car?

pricechild··on Post-Olympic Abandonment
I'm sorry but this is a question of sustainability, not legacy. They're not even close.
pricechild··on Show HN: Intergram – Free live chat widget linked to your Telegram messenger
Telegadget? meh... malaysian phone company or something.

I just don't like the 'i'.

pricechild··on Ask HN: What're the best-designed things you've ever used?
HAProxy & its documentation especially.

It's a fantastic piece of software.

pricechild··on My Interview at Uber
I tried "Gett" once or twice since they did a deal for new joiners.

They included a tip feature but it infuriated me with the way you had to decide on the tip amount before the journey was over. What if they don't drop me off where I want and stop the journey early? That default 20% tip you encouraged me to set is... not good.

pricechild··on A scalper who used bots to buy millions of tickets, now wants to stop them
Surely you were offered the 30% before the company was making £3m/yr in profit?

I think that's the parent's point.

pricechild··on Git-scm.com status report
Raspberrypi.org hosted the entire site using raspberry pi's for a while.

I've just checked and it looks like they nolonger do so though...

    $ curl -I https://www.raspberrypi.org 2>/dev/null  | grep X-Served-By
    X-Served-By: Blog VM 2
Fun while it lasted!
pricechild··on Data Loss at GitLab
Do you self-host any services currently & have they incurred any similar unexpected downtime in the past?

If you self-hosted code reviews/CI, would you expect having a similar downtime causing problem in the future?

I expect the answer to be "Yes" for most companies.

pricechild··on An Email Thread Between a Developer and Gigster
What happens if you don't obtain permission?

Do you get fired, or do they claim ownership?

pricechild··on How Airbnb Stopped Playing Nice
I didn't realise until the abrupt ending that this was an advert.

Ugh.
