pricechild··on Britain Moves to Criminalize Reading Extremist Material on the Internet
> it would never be actively used against the public.

> or to have some charges to throw at people who they have arrested but can't charge.

I don't understand who else it would be used against?

pricechild··on Ubuntu Wiki Homepage Vandalised
It's only immutable because you're not logged in.

I've logged in and reverted the edit. Wiki's - Simple :-)

pricechild··on No excuses – we let you down
I'd steered clear of this company to date, and was about to snort at the "apology" but this:

> If you were forced to use an alternative payment method and therefore incurred fees, we will fully reimburse you for this amount.

does make me waver, they're obviously trying to do the right thing.

I'm still confused about whether they provide the same guarantees other organizations do under the FSCS. I wouldn't feel comfortable without this. Responses by their team to questions about this suggest they protect your deposits under some other regulation... but since it's different I don't understand it yet and trust it less.

Use the EU cookie directive as an example of why that world view isn't quite correct.

Even before it, most browsers had optional methods of blocking cookies...

pricechild··on Man convicted after preventing counter-terrorism police search
My naive understanding of my country's laws is that it doesn't.

I could have a file filled with /dev/random and the law would still apply.

pricechild··on Understanding Uber: It's Not About the App
The article details this, ctrl+f for "Understanding the economics"

i.e. they are subsidising rides themselves, temporarily.

pricechild··on Magic Sudoku – Solve Sudoku with the power of AR
The UK's national lottery android (and maybe Apple?) app already does the second one.

It's just done with a QR code.

Unfortunately... there was a bug and it told people they hadn't won: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/national-lott...

pricechild··on Vulnerabilities in mobile networks opens Bitcoin wallets to hackers
It is possible to enroll hardware tokens, but I believe SMS is a prerequisite.

It's also allegedly possible to deactivate in a bunch of other ways, e.g. by adding a new credit card.

pricechild··on Salvaging your way to a working Tesla Model S for $6500
> Was all of the effort worth it? We certainly think it was! The car was deemed road worthy and even has functioning Super Charging capabilities which according to [Rich] are disabled by Tesla if such a Frankenstein build is detected.

Isn't that inevitable?

And then what recourse will/should be available?

pricechild··on DuckDuckGo vs Google
I'm continually impressed at how well this feature works.

Several times I've come across an oddly formatted page and worried it'd lose styling required for the correct interpretation but not yet!

pricechild··on The only safe email is text-only email
> You can always get it unlisted.

How do you do that? The vast majority of blocklists I've interacted with have been unwilling to deal with questions, instead responding only that if you fix "something" (not always specified) automated measures will remove it from the list eventually.

In my experience it has also been extremely difficult to deal with people using blocklists. It's easy to find a bunch of people using .tor.dan.me.uk rather than .torexit.dan.me.uk "just to be safe". Frankly, I'm not sure why the former list exists in the first place other than to be an arse? What threats do entry/relay nodes pose to you?

pricechild··on Equifax Faces Multibillion-Dollar Lawsuit Over Hack

pricechild··on Amazon to Build Second HQ in North America
Click through into the RFP and there's a section touching on this:

  Incentives
  –
Identify incentive programs available for the Project at the state/province and local
levels. Ou tline the type of incentive (i.e. land, site preparation, tax credits/exemptions, relocation
grants, workforce grants, utility incentives/grants, permitting, and fee reductions) and the amount.
The initial cost and ongoing cost of doing business are critic
  al decision drivers.
pricechild··on Tech entrepreneurs’ politics: Liberal, with one big exception
It'd be interesting to see their definition of "national defense"...
pricechild··on Zero-confirmation inter-account transfers of .uk domains with eNom
Nominet don't do any verification when these transfers are made.

Most registrars I've checked don't do any verification themselves either.

Here's an example of the race conditions many registrars fall to: http://blog.pricechild.co.uk/2016/06/uk-domain-transfers-are...

Nominet allow you to enable 2fa on your account but this means sweet fa. It doesn't stop transfers by other actors.

pricechild··on HSBC is killing my business, piece by piece
There's been a lot of advice shouted about that everyone should only make the minimum payments as it'll be cheaper when the debt is eventually written off - if you earn less than £X.

That only works if the rules stay the same.

I say it's a fair gamble that they won't and that many will wish they paid them off earlier.

pricechild··on Build Uber-for-X within a day using HyperTrack
I find it amusing you'd think of them first rather than... The Co-operative? https://www.co-operative.coop/about-us
pricechild··on NHS cyber-defender Marcus Hutchins to appear in US court
> The arrest was initially confirmed by a screenshot that a friend of Hutchins captured of the facility website. When the friend visited the detention center on Thursday morning, he was told Hutchins was no longer there. The website mention of Hutchins was also gone. PJ Thomas, an administrator at the US Marshals office that the website referenced, said the agency has no record of Hutchins. The friend, citing privacy concerns, asked not to be identified by name in this article.

Do you have any sources that reversing article 50 "should be impossible"?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-39291512 seems to give a good spread of opinions, including:

pricechild··on Dell XPS 15 9560 Review
I've given up on bumblebee.

I have upgraded an Ubuntu laptop over a few years and every upgrade it broke, requiring some new incantation to fix it the next time. I don't think it's considered the future?

I believe the future is called "Prime Synchronisation", announced a few years ago. Good luck getting it to work though: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/957814/prime-and-pr... I gave up after a while.

We're probably nearing the time when I'll give all the methods another go, but currently I'm back into the "change setting and log out + in" camp.

As an aside, bumblebee also seems to break my i3 environment... I get hangs & magic sysreq won't recover. I've had to go back to the default DE.

pricechild··on Netflix is $20B in debt. Can it keep borrowing its way to success?
I think we're starting to see existing providers offering that.

YouView in the UK was the first I saw.

Now Fire TVs from Amazon display titles from apps (e.g. Netflix and a bunch of others I don't use) as clearly as first-party items. There'll be a square for House of Cards right next to American Gods.

pricechild··on Who moved my cheese, 1Password?
I used to do something very similar to you before moving to Syncthing instead of Dropbox.

It's awesome and I can highly recommend it.

Unfortunately I'm not sure the iOS story is as great as Android?

pricechild··on It's been 191 days since Google Drive worked for me
Why don't they give up? I can't imagine that's going to help their case getting refunded?

I'd be amazed if paying customers weren't given 'slightly' better service, and that'd just make things more difficult dropping back to the lower tier?

pricechild··on Wildcard Certificates Coming January 2018
I've really enjoyed using https://github.com/hlandau/acme and we use it in prod.

I'm not sure how up to date https://github.com/hlandau/acme#comparison-list-of-client-im... is.
