prh8··on 'Scary moment' as orcas disrupt ocean boat race
> only solution here is probably to explore something as a nonlethal deterrent

Or we could stop boating in their space

prh8··on The WFH future is destroying bosses' brains (2021)
There are enterprise solutions for device management and access that solve this problem. Additionally, someone wanting to do such things would have already been building up that sensitive data and it wouldn't matter what happens when you fire them.
prh8··on Instant Brands, maker of Instant Pot and Pyrex cookware, files for bankruptcy
For all the discussion about Pyrex manufacturing below, here's a quick helper-

The original (and good quality glass) is sold as PYREX.

The worse glass is sold as pyrex.

Those 2 are licensed out separately.

prh8··on If We’re Not Careful, the AI Revolution Could Become the ‘Great Homogenization’
This is nothing more than an ad for this person's other works and Bitcoin Magazine
prh8··on Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter
He's going to continue running Twitter into the ground while now being able to make her the scapegoat for it. Typical glass cliff
prh8··on A look at Crystal, a programming language for humans
The biggest thing is the massive speed improvement compared to working with bloated ActiveRecord models, associations, plus some memory bloat. The Crystal implementation is massively fast dealing with database data.
prh8··on A look at Crystal, a programming language for humans
It's not specifically Ruby, but also using ActiveRecord, loading bloated models, associations, and some business logic. There is also a large amount of memory bloat with the sitemap library when working with large datasets. The Crystal sitemap library has a way to avoid that same bloat.

With Crystal, all of those things are massively faster.

prh8··on A look at Crystal, a programming language for humans
Real world example for Crystal: our overnight sitemap generation (built using Ruby, as part of our Rails app) took 6 hours to generate 20 million links. At some point due to infra changes, it stopped running to completion. Since then, we ported it over to Crystal, with the main code virtually unchanged (library to help generate sitemaps has matching API). Just had to set up basic database mapping for a few tables. That version is now in production, and it now processes 30 million links in about 30 minutes.
prh8··on Colorado kills law that made it harder for cities to offer Internet service
For all that effort, why not just get a permit?
prh8··on Lyft to cut 1,072 employees, or 26% of its workforce
I was in DC for business 2 weekends ago and had 3 Lyfts cancel on me. Never had that happen before on either platform. Checked my rider rating just in case and it's 4.97. Really frustrating to deal with, especially when timing matters.
prh8··on DuckDuckGo’s building AI-generated answers into its search engine
I haven’t used the feature yet, but Kagi has recently added AI into its functionality as well.
prh8··on The Pornography Paradox
Modern women want emotionally intelligent and kind men and are then stereotyped, blamed, and gaslit when they don't accept immature and manipulative men instead.
prh8··on NPR won’t tweet from NPR until Twitter removes false “state-affiliated” label
Just like everything else from the right wing, every accusation is an admission
prh8··on Meta stops offering remote work in new job postings
It's just as possible to do no work while sitting in an office all day, we've all seen that
prh8··on Rand Paul blocks the fast-tracking of TikTok ban
In the thread earlier, a lot of people were curious about banning Tiktok, whether it was the reasons or implementation. As for the reason, here's a quick demonstration: search Instagram for France, and then search Tiktok. This stark difference holds true for a massive number of things, this is just a current example. Tiktok has become a far better news source than any other social media, especially since the recent changes with Twitter.
prh8··on Utah is first US state to limit teen social media access
So kids are just going to replace all of that with more porn? Utah is already the biggest consumer of it
prh8··on Cigna saves millions by having its doctors reject claims without reading them
This is literally how it works in the US, this is not the exception
prh8··on America’s bad bet on expanding legal sports gambling
As virtually most issues in America, unchecked capitalism is ruinous
prh8··on The tech downturn seen through Hacker News comments
I'm curious to see a chart of the "who wants to be hired" threads
prh8··on Serving 250k developers with one support engineer
I think it's interesting that their whole shtick is "all to serve the developer" but they just kept overloading their own engineers, moving from new solution to new solution, before they just decided to hire more people.
prh8··on Seattle becomes first U.S. city to ban caste discrimination
A melting pot means that everything (everyone) assimilates to the majority. That's not really what America was intended to be, but it is what a large part of the population wants it to be.
prh8··on Twitter restricted in Turkey in aftermath of earthquake
"it's not too hard to do something you have no knowledge about, while being in shock and survival mode from extreme trauma both physical and mental"

use critical thinking for like 2 seconds

prh8··on Show HN: We built an open-source LaunchDarkly alternative for B2Bs
They are saying they started home-rolled and switched to LD
prh8··on Until further notice, think twice before using Google to download software
Not sure if you've read about Kagi on here, but one of its features is that you can weight/pin/hide certain sites in results. It works well for programming (although default search is well tuned for programming). There is also a feature called lenses which is a more fine tuned way of doing it. I think there's one for programming, one for shopping. I haven't personally used lenses though.
prh8··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
I'm using Devise. It's rock solid and goes along with a general sense of "use trusted solutions" for me. I will be adding Omniauth and the Devise plugin for it, but that will be the extent of what I need in the future.
prh8··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
I'm currently approaching MVP / ready to pitch stage on something and these are my choices-

Rails 7.1 w/ Tailwind (esbuild, not import maps) Postgres DaisyUI for Tailwind UI components View Components for Ruby Nothing particularly "hot" but there are some newer tools

Post MVP, the only thing I'm looking to change is potentially replace a very heavy data analytic background job with a Crystal version of it. Will be super easy to port, and since I'm using Sidekiq, I'll drop in Sidekiq.cr and thus won't need to make any other system changes.

I'm thrilled about it, it's taken a month to go from zero to everything working and I'm just tidying up the marketing site

prh8··on Arizona inducing the labor of pregnant prisoners against their will
It's not really a ridiculous strawman, it's more indicative of how ridiculous these personhood laws are. Here in Arizona (I am here), you cannot get health insurance for fetuses, nor claim as a dependent. I would expect traffic tickets for using the HOV lanes (similar to the Texas woman doing so a few months ago).

This is all political theater and it does nothing for actual life. Not to mention that 9 of the 10 worst states for maternal and fetal morbidity are red states enacting policies like this.

prh8··on DuckDuckGo now blocks Google sign-in pop-ups on all sites
Have you tried Kagi? I think you might find it appealing. Especially if you are a developer or someone who is regularly searching technical/code related things. It's really good for that, and allows you to weight/block sites as you please to further improve results.
prh8··on Ask HN: Why are some YC startups not posting salary ranges when law requires it?
CA has passed their law and it takes effect on January 1
prh8··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
Was this another CEO "taking all responsibility" without any actual responsiblity/penalties? Not counting resigning.
