prh8··on Are greedy companies to blame for grocery inflation? We looked at the data
In totality, we have choices. But that does not account for individual circumstances, and ignores the way that work life in the US has shaped people's lives. Not everyone has the luxury of being able to raise chickens, hunt for food, spend their time and money at farmer's markets, etc. Capitalism in America is very much designed to keep people from having time or money or ability to actually change their circumstances.
prh8··on Are greedy companies to blame for grocery inflation? We looked at the data
It is when examined closely, but we have a corrupted form of capitalism and any "ism" is inherently viewed as bad because of how it's taught in the American education system.
prh8··on Are greedy companies to blame for grocery inflation? We looked at the data
We do not have true free market in the US. When all grocery stores jack up prices, what choice do people have? Eat cereal for every meal (an actual CEO quote).
prh8··on Are greedy companies to blame for grocery inflation? We looked at the data
There's a difference between people working to survive fighting for every dollar versus the CEOs who make millions because they can pump the stock price by squeezing every penny out of consumers.
prh8··on A day in the life of a Walmart manager
If both options paid you 240k a year, would you rather be a software engineer or do the exact job the Walmart manager does? I'm guessing you'd rather do SWE
prh8··on I Lost Faith in Kagi
From this and other things, Vlad has seemed to have a heavy Elon Musk vibe, which is unfortunate.

My partner works in mental healthcare. There are absolutely more than 100 people who need anonymity. Far more than 100 people who have patients show up at their residence with bad intentions. I think men are also more predisposed to think that "most people" don't have anything to worry about with their personal safety.

All I want is a search engine that

1. ignores junk 2. allows me to up/down/pin rank certain sites 3. efficiently gets me to what I'm looking for

Kagi was that, and still mostly is, but all the AI stuff is pretty distracting, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to be willing to support a company with a good piece of tech but bad human leadership.

prh8··on Difftastic, a structural diff tool that understands syntax
Do you know if there’s a way to do per directory aliases with Mise? Every time I see a tool for directory environment, that’s the one feature in really hoping for
prh8··on Ask HN: Did you encounter any leap year bugs today?
Same thing for us
prh8··on Taylor Swift threatens legal action against student who tracks her jet
There's a whole demographic of people that stalk and threaten her, and now a political party and a news platform that are pushing a narrative of war with her to their irrational followers who have shown they are willing to act violently and criminally. And unsurprisingly, the comments here predictably sound similar to that group.

Personal safety is a perfectly reasonable concern to have.

prh8··on Post-mortem for last week's incident at Kagi
Totally missed this incident, just want to say thank you to the Kagi team for an awesome product. Love the search and also Orion.
prh8··on Crystal 1.11.0 Is Released
We use it to do nightly sitemap generation of over 30 million links. Takes about 30 minutes, replaced a Ruby (Rails) process that took hours.
prh8··on Cancer Is Striking More Young People, and Doctors Are Alarmed and Baffled
Even then it's difficult in major chains. Better to find local/boutique shops like Natural Grocer, Sprouts, if those are available.
prh8··on Cancer Is Striking More Young People, and Doctors Are Alarmed and Baffled
Baffled, lol. Micro plastics, hormones, preservatives, the capitalization of food production (food "product"). What is sold in major American grocery stores barely classifies as food.

Americans are being poisoned by the food we eat, how it's produced, packaged, distributed.

The only people baffled by it are those old enough that they were raised on actual food and don't understand what has happened the last few decades.

prh8··on A Writer's Ruby
TLDR: Rails is shipping a linter config by default in the future
prh8··on Is the American Dream Dead?
Yes, Reaganomics and late stage capitalism killed it
prh8··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
What's the difference between leadership skills and cult of following?
prh8··on Tech layoffs: Google, Amazon, Snap and Zillow announce new job cuts
The article literally says Snap dropped 20 product managers...
prh8··on Why doctors in America earn so much
Not quite the question-- the real question is why would they be effective at the jobs of others? Doctors have 10-15 years of training, there's a reason for that.
prh8··on Goldman Sachs reportedly said Apple Card savings account was a mistake
Amex is at 4.3 now
prh8··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023)
To add to this, because it has been removed but was previously included in postings: this is so they can move to fully in-office in the future.
prh8··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023)
This is not really remote
prh8··on Do not put plastic in the microwave
Those are just as bad, and often times have an internal package coating that also deteriorates
prh8··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
It's not tracked, that's (part of) the whole point
prh8··on Comparing Datadog and New Relic's support for OpenTelemetry data
My company has a medium 5 figure monthly spend on DD, and it seems massively overpriced. I was discussing New Relic with someone the other day (just what I'm familiar with). But very curious what other services are solid that we should look into? We use APM, logs, infrastructure monitoring, distributed tracing, pretty much everything.
prh8··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2023)
FYI every time I visit your site (seen your jobs in the past), the infinite scroll makes it really difficult to get to th company about page or anywhere to find more info.
prh8··on “We’ve Changed the Game”: Teamsters Win Historic UPS Contract
UPS has had record profits lately. Inflation is due to corporate profit record breaking not employee wages.
prh8··on Texas A&M suspended professor accused of criticizing Lt. Gov. Patrick in lecture
Correct
prh8··on Show HN: I made a customizable iOS browser for minimalists and myself
This looks really great! Would love to get Kagi as a search engine option
prh8··on Kagi raises $670k
Publicly traded means that your primary customers are Blackrock and Vanguard, the whole concept of individual investors is just investment firms fooling people into thinking they have some influence over a company.
prh8··on Oregon finally legalizes pumping your own gas
This is exactly what happens to every Oregonian. For most it's taking a car to college out of state.
