pretz··on We turned $140k on Kickstarter into $40k debt and broke even
> On September 9th, 2015 we received $127,827.01 from Kickstarter. This sounds like a lot of money, until we say that this week, November 22nd 2016, we have finally gotten out of debt. That’s 440 days of work after creating the product and running the Kickstarter before we made $1.

As someone who's spent their professional career working for venture-backed tech companies that hadn't yet made a profit, that sounds damn good. Many many companies never get that far.

pretz··on CocoaPods downloads max out five GitHub server CPUs
CocoaPods is much more akin to RubyGems or PyPI or CPAN, all of which are established as useful tools outside of OS level package managers. There's a need for a iOS/Cocoa package manager (that understands Xcode!) and CocoaPods has so far been the most successful.
pretz··on Kill the Wireless Contract, Buy Your Own Phone
I've been using Virgin Mobile happily for coming on two years. $35/month for LTE on my iPhone 5s is pretty much impossible to beat. Plus, I can get tethering for $5/day if I need it while traveling.

Yes, it's Sprint, and their network isn't the best, but since I don't live in San Francisco I've rarely had problems.

pretz··on Successful Mobile Teams
Warning: there's a section of this post called "Drive engagement"
pretz··on Wire – Modern Communications Network
When showing off a brand new app with no existing userbase, please show or tell what your app does before waxing poetic about its beauty. If it hadn't been for the HN headline, I wouldn't have stayed on this page long enough to see what the app did.

CORRECTION: I missed the intro animation when I opened the link in a background tab, and somehow got left with a masthead image with just three icons on a blank phone, not even the download link it showed after I refreshed.

pretz··on Google Fiber Austin
While I'm excited to see Google Fiber push into Austin, I've been very happy with my 110 mbps down / 11 mbps up from local company Grande: http://mygrande.com/internet/compare. Austin is lucky to have actual competition among cable and ISP providers, unlike many other cities.
pretz··on 64-bit and iOS 8 Requirements for New Apps
iOS 8 apps can still be built to support iOS 7
pretz··on Debugging file corruption on iOS
> "The SSL layer instead handled a raw file descriptor and, consequently, lifetime handling was not automatically synchronized ... We worked with the networking team and fixed this issue within hours."

Why on earth is Facebook writing their own SSL layer for iOS?

pretz··on Word Lens (Quest Visual) is Joining Google
I think you misspelled acquihired.
pretz··on Ack is a grep-like tool, optimised for programmers
It's worth noting that if you're always searching in a git repo, git-grep is pretty comparable to ack and you already have it installed.
pretz··on Seth Roberts has died
Looks like the blog is down now, the linked to post says simply "Hello, this is Seth’s sister, Amy, with the sad news that Seth died on Saturday, April 26, 2014. He collapsed while hiking near his home in Berkeley, CA. He had asked that any memorial gifts be made to Amnesty International. Thank you to all for following and sharing Seth’s work."

I had the pleasure of knowing Seth personally and am deeply saddened to hear this news.

pretz··on That Will Be Easy (It's Never Easy)
I would love to hear more about what it took to wrestle Bundler to do what you guys needed and any insight into how Bundler's design could have been improved to make doing this easier.
pretz··on New Oculus Rift dev kit goes on sale for $350 today, likely ships in July
I'm being quoted $22 shipping within the US. Seems really excessive.
pretz··on Gog.com Soon On More Platforms
Sounds like GOG wants to make sure they can have a presence on Steam Boxes. Good call.
pretz··on Empathy
The site's name is an Apple/OSX cultural reference. It refers to NeXSTEP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nextstep In particular, the core classes of Objective-c (and thus Cocoa and Cocoa Touch for iOS) use NS as a prefix: https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/cocoa/...
pretz··on Raspberry Pi gets its own sound card
The Schiit Modi is double the cost of the Wolfson card and has no audio input capabilities. Seems like for uses outside of an HTPC the Wolfson card provides a lot more flexibility.
pretz··on Show HN: SupportKit embeds Zendesk into your iOS apps, with one line of code
One followup: I feel really scammed by entering my email address just to be redirected to github. If you don't want to give them your email address, just click here: https://github.com/radialpoint/SupportKit
pretz··on Show HN: SupportKit embeds Zendesk into your iOS apps, with one line of code
I think you just saved me a lot of unnecessary development time. Thanks!
pretz··on DissidentX – Censorship resistance tool by Bram Cohen
Q. Why did you use Python3 as a reference language?

A. Because not having distinct binary and unicode string types is barbaric.

Well played.

pretz··on 1Password 4 for Mac is here
Watch out, the browser plugin upgrade instructions at http://learn.agilebits.com/1Password4/Mac/en/KB/v3-extension... require you to launch 1Password 3 to sync your browser, something I can't do after upgrading to 4 via the App Store.

I guess I'll go dig it out of Time Machine ....

pretz··on iOS 7, thoroughly reviewed
Why is lack of support for the 3GS any different than iOS 6's lack of support for the 3G? The 3GS came out in _2009_. I'm surprised it supports iOS 6; the 3G can't even run iOS 5.
pretz··on Breeze is closing on August 1
37signals recommended functioning alternative services, not just data export.
pretz··on Show HN: Make your iPhone app look beautiful
If you can't get the capitalization of Xcode's name right, can I trust your code?

pretz··on Algorithms [pdf]
I had the pleasure of taking the class based around this book from Christos Papadimitriou while at UC Berkeley. It is indeed a concise and excellent book. If you see it in person you'll be surprised how short it is compared to most textbooks. I must confess, though, that some of the exercises can be absolutely maddening.

pretz··on Survey: Simple iOS Forms library
This looks well designed and useful, but whenever I see a new project like this my first question is "What makes this different?"

There are a number of existing form libraries for iOS* that have been around for a while at differing levels of complexity. Could you give a brief summary of why you wrote a new library instead of using one of the existing ones? Putting an explanation like that in the readme would be a great way to explain why you did all this work.

pretz··on 2012 MacBook Pro Powers on By Itself on Rough Roads
Hmm, really? Looks like consensus is a design flaw is a design flaw.
pretz··on Apparently Yelp has a no-fly list
You can consider this an officially sanctioned response.
pretz··on Apparently Yelp has a no-fly list
I work for Yelp, and it sounds like we screwed up. Apologies that we weren't able to get this woman into the MySQL event. We're obviously reviewing our security procedures to make sure they are more sane and sensitive for next time.
