prettyStandard··on Majority of sites and apps use dark patterns in the marketing of subscriptions
I was/am skeptical also, but a quick Google search found this.

> Testimonials and user feedback usually display positive reviews and lack any negative experiences, or details on services or products. Furthermore, the online environment makes it difficult to differentiate between genuine and fake testimonials.

prettyStandard··on How to get root access to your Sleep Number bed
You have it backwards. They're assuming non-open source is backdoor'ed. Not that open source isn't backdoor'ed.
prettyStandard··on Tiny bright objects discovered at dawn of universe baffle scientists
Galaxy Brain thought:

I feel like the big bang is a white hole.

Come back I have more!

All world lines end in black holes. All world lines start at white holes.

Many Worlds theory is pretty popular. I buy into it. Every thing that can happen does happen, but also... There's this one that goes every black hole spawns a new universe, with slightly different laws of physics, based on the parent universe. So the multiverse starts favouring universes that can make new ones.

Does this mean the Spiderman universe is out there somewhere? Even hypothetically IDK. There's probably some constraint on consistent laws of physics.

prettyStandard··on ChromeOS will soon be developed on large portions of the Android stack
The problem I generally run into those with is they have trouble getting root or simulating root. Particularly on Samsung. That limit's running things in containers on the phone as well. But last time I looked at it it did look like there were some promising projects. I forget what.

prettyStandard··on Hacking millions of modems and investigating who hacked my modem
That was my first thought. That they didn't even find the original attack vector. But comments above this suggest something even worse they are in Cox's network actively wiping out their own logs.
prettyStandard··on Ticketmaster breach affects more than half a billion users
Look at all the comments from the web devs saying they don't go out of their way to disallow this. Their situation is about the same as here.

prettyStandard··on Dehydration associated with poorer performance on attention tasks among adults
I mentioned this because of the ongoing anti-Samsung thread. I've always avoided Samsung but caved on the folding phones. I haven't really tried out any other phones lately, but I really like their buttons to disable the microphone and camera for this. Not sure if it's Samsung or stock Android at this point. Also I just got an update their adaptive battery protection is something I have been wanting.

prettyStandard··on Seven Dyson Sphere Candidates
Okay but if you kept all that mass inside of Earth's orbit then you would not change the center of gravity, and Earth's orbit wouldn't change.
prettyStandard··on -2000 Lines of Code (2007)
Maybe you are being sarcastic...

Or you've completely missed the point of the article/story. The point is lines of code are almost meaningless. In this story the person saved 2k lines of code by rewriting a rendering engine, and use somehow think that's less than deleting a 45 k line jest snapshot.

prettyStandard··on Does fermion doubling make the universe not a computer?
All SpaceTime curves start at the Big bang, and they all end at black holes.

Also time and space get flipped inside a black hole. All of your futures point further into the black hole.

prettyStandard··on Does fermion doubling make the universe not a computer?
I get being tired of talking about simulation theory...

Personally I think we are in a AI nursery. God is real. Heaven is real. Either we live a good life, and get advanced to the next round of the simulation or we get thrown in the trash.

OTOH, now that I understand the whole 'Grabby Aliens' thing; that's another solid solution to the Fermi Paradox.

Hard to say.

I agree it's nuts and wasteful. It seems like Microsoft & Apple could come up with an arrangement to reduce their waste.
prettyStandard··on Azure Central US has been down for us since 7pm CST last night
I see nothing on their dashboard, but a Microsoft rep got on our bridge call and accepted responsibility for our outage saying they were having trouble in their Central US data center. This has massively affected our platform.

prettyStandard··on Everyone's getting ghosted, the new normal in tech recruiting
Agreed. A bit besides the point, but I'm dating a recruiter that has worked in a few industries, but not tech. She says, as a rule, she doesn't provide feedback. People just don't listen or accept it, they just use it as an opportunity to argue. So what's the point?
prettyStandard··on Amazon Prime Video starts showing ads in January unless you pay $2.99/month xtra
Not to rush to Walmarts aid... Their Walmart+ subscription also comes with Paramount Plus.

I'm planning:

- on cancelling Netflix

- Canceling Amazon Prime, slower shipping frequently gives you digital dollars you can use to buy TV shows and music

- Keep using Walmart Plus

I need my groceries, and I don't want to do the shopping. They will pickup about just about anything in the store. I haven't tested the upper limit for size or weight though.

Paramount Plus isn't that great but I don't really want to spend my life watching TV. I just sometimes need a distraction.

prettyStandard··on No morphological differences between living and non-living systems are yet known
I believe in the beginning of A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawkings, he mentions a similar problem where it's equally difficult to imagine a universe that always exists as a universe that was created by "something" that always existed.

I'm sure I'm butchering something about this interpretation in the decades since I've read it.

My point is this seems to be a similar problem where it's equally difficult to imagine that consciousness is something that arises from sufficiently complex systems, as it is to imagine its inherent to all systems.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying I'm not certain you're right. I can see it either way.

prettyStandard··on Adam? ... is there a reason your laptop is in the fridge? (2006)
Maybe metal contracts at lower temperatures and thus the drive head is able to move with less friction.

I will be trying this if I ever experience it. I don't have computer hardware fail that often.
