praveenster··on Japan attempts historic moon landing
No, I think they were successful. https://www.bbc.com/news/live/science-environment-68019846
praveenster··on Coronavirus: Five Brits in French ski chalet catch virus
I would go to the doctors office and get myself checked, if I were in your situation. Let’s hope and pray that you test negative and if not you can take immediate action.
praveenster··on Wikipedia Has Cancer (2017)
I usually check ratings for a charity by reviewing it on Charity Navigator (which is itself a 501 (c) (3) and in need of donations as well). The rating for the Wikimedia Foundation happens to be really good: https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summar...

I use Wikipedia for reference on various topics on a daily basis and I know my kids do it at school as well. Hence, I donate to the Wikimedia Foundation, the approximate cost of my yearly Netflix subscription as they provide huge amounts of valuable information without any ads and to everyone without paywalls. There aren’t very many free services on the web that run without ads.

praveenster··on Evaluation of CPU profiling tools: gperftools, Valgrind and gprof (2015)

praveenster··on Show HN: Ansible Crash Course
Not op but it is mentioned in the Show HN blurb above:

> Just note an email address is required to register for the course - this is a limitation of the platform I'm using to host the course. Sorry about that!

praveenster··on China is building a floating train that could be faster than air travel
I get your point and I somewhat agree with it, especially when I see a lot of cities worldwide having better public transportation than in places in my neighborhood (SoCal). But, the large benefit of working on these futuristic ideas is that it helps indirect innovation in other areas, similar to how the lunar missions helped build and shape a lot of other technologies.
praveenster··on The Amazing $1 Microcontroller (2017)
This sounds really interesting and is something I’ve been meaning to do for my house as well. Do you have a blog post with the details or a github page?
praveenster··on How B players hire C players (2018)
“One of the other interviewers was a famous figure in an academic branch of engineering. The interviewee argued with the famous figure. It seemed to me that the candidate was probably right but the interviewer was so offended we couldn't extend an offer.”

This, to me, looks like the famous figure had too much ego. I wonder if that makes them a B player instead of an A?

praveenster··on Ask HN: What open source project, in your opinion, has the highest code quality?
zeromq. Both the code and documentation are very good.
praveenster··on "Pwned Passwords" V2 With Half a Billion Passwords
Just out of curiosity, aren’t you worried that keepasstouch app on the iOS may be compromised?
praveenster··on If all cars were autonomous
This TED talk provides some interesting insights about self driving cars of the future:

praveenster··on White House wants to end Social Security numbers as a national ID
This might be an interesting avenue for the tech community to come up with a solution similar to digital certificates and apply it to SSN numbers with an RFC of sorts that gets whetted by security experts and submitted to the government as a proposal to fix the problem long term.
praveenster··on Ask HN: Do you meditate and which system do you follow?
I use this app called Insight Timer on iOS. I use Bose noise cancelling headphones when I meditate as it helps cut any surrounding noise. I started with the free tunes that Insight Timer provided and meditated for 5 minutes in the morning. I have slowly increased it to about 15 minutes and purchased some of the other tunes via in app purchase on the app. Daily meditation definitely helps stay calm the rest of the day. I also use the same app after I get back home from work and use a different tune and it helps unwind.
praveenster··on Tesla's Asymmetric War Against the Auto Industry
Yes, the Volt is really fantastic. I bought it December 2016 and haven't filled gas since then. I have about 5500 miles on it so far. I drive about 25 miles each way to/from work and couple of stretches are downhill on the way to work and hence the battery drain is minimal, usually 50% at the end of the day. The drive is very smooth and there is hardly any road noise. The buying (or rather leasing) experience with the GM dealer was also really smooth and impressive, unlike working with other high pressure dealer sales staff.
praveenster··on Tesla's Asymmetric War Against the Auto Industry
They seem to have handed over the keys to the first 30 owners during the event:

https://www.recode.net/2017/7/28/16053662/how-to-watch-live-...

Around the 3:42 time mark, they seem to hand it over to the first 30, aside from the 20 for the internal testing.

praveenster··on Ask HN: Which wireless router do you use at home?
I did the same thing on one of the mesh units as well as it was in one of the rooms diametrically opposite from the main unit and on the second floor. The mesh shows great signal strength now.
praveenster··on Ask HN: Which wireless router do you use at home?
Google WiFi (mesh of 3 units). Really love it so far. Very easy to configure and manage. No more clunky webpages to navigate, no more worrying about firmware upgrades. Switched recently from Linksys WRT610N after using it for about 8 years without any issues except for lack of firmware updates.
praveenster··on Sublime Text 3 Build 3132 released
I love sublime text and bought the ST3 license a couple years ago. For the last couple of months I've been holding off using VSCode as I felt the same way that it was an unfair comparison between the work of one or few developers vs a big team at Microsoft. But just last week I finally caved in and started using VSCode on a regular basis and I seem to like it a lot more than ST3 despite the issues about large files. I am just worried though if more people switch over and ST development stops because of funding and if Microsoft abandons VSCode development, then what are we left with? At least VSCode is on GitHub so the community might take over but I feel bad for indie developers who have to compete with large teams from big companies that have no direct revenue from the product.

praveenster··on Fidget Spinners: Why Being Interesting Can Do More for You Than Being Useful
I used the instructions and 3D model from here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1802260

and built a couple. My first 3D printer project experience. It was fun for me and the kids. Note that schools have started to ask kids not bring them to school as they don't really help with fidgeting and are mostly used as toys.

praveenster··on Is Fat Killing Us, or Is Sugar?
At time mark 57:20 in the DailyMotion video they say that it is neither of them individually but the combination of fat and sugar that is the problem.
praveenster··on Ask HN: Where do you host your personal blog these days?
Blogger. I am planning to migrate it to Pelican (getpelican.com) on DigitalOcean soon.
praveenster··on Mathematicians becoming data scientists
Yes, I am also interested in going the self study route with MOOCs but there is way too much information and resources that it is hard to figure out how/where to start. It would definitely be helpful if you could provide recommendations on books.

They seem to have taken a totally different approach of bringing agile and startup culture into government software engineering. This podcast about cloud.gov on SoftwareEngineeringDaily has very interesting insights about how they work: https://softwareengineeringdaily.com/2016/06/26/cloud-gov-wi...

Totally changed my opinion about software development and the government.

praveenster··on Playing with 80M Amazon Product Review Ratings Using Apache Spark
From the article the data is available at: http://jmcauley.ucsd.edu/data/amazon/

"I wrote a simple Python script to combine the per-category ratings-only data from the Amazon product reviews dataset curated by Julian McAuley, Rahul Pandey, and Jure Leskovec for their 2015 paper Inferring Networks of Substitutable and Complementary Products"

praveenster··on [dead]
OpenStack has begun to feel more of a vendor marketplace with each of them trying to see if you can adopt their flavor. It looks somewhat similar to the large number of the Linux distros that were popular about 10 years ago, except that these are much more opinionated and have serious vendor lock-in possibilities since it relates to enterprise. Kubernetes, on the other hand feels like a harmonious and homogeneous solution to a specific problem.
praveenster··on Google joins .NET Foundation as Samsung brings .NET support to Tizen
In addition to that it might be a good idea to make Swift a first-class citizen too. This would give developers a good chance to use similar concepts on both iOS and Android.
