pravda··on Ask HN: Why do most job sites hide salary?
>the job pays $60.00 per hour

That's probably the best strategy. It removes the problem the plumber has when quoting a price, which is "how much can I soak this guy for?"

pravda··on The Anti-Amazon Alliance
Who is paying a PR firm to pitch a story about the BASIC computer language?

(as mentioned on linked page)

pravda··on ‘I’m Just Living a Nightmare’: Oil Industry Braces for Devastation
Every dollar not transferred to the oil industry is a dollar that can be spent on other things.

To put it another way, the number of people who benefit when oil prices go down far exceed the number of people who lose when oil prices go down.

pravda··on San Francisco emerged from a lockdown too soon during the 1918 Spanish flu
>spend $40 on a fire extinguisher every few years

Gosh, I hope they last longer then that!

I have a (genuine) Halon fire extinguisher hanging on the wall. According to the internets, Halon was banned in 1994!

The pressure dial on it is still in the green.

pravda··on New Coke, 35 years on
New Coke was much better then old coke!

I find Coca Cola "Classic" undrinkable. Too tart, for my taste.

pravda··on The B-17 ‘miracle’: Defying Hitler with sabotage
Swiss fighter planes also shot down German planes that overflew their territory.

I'm not sure what this has to do with the linked story, though.

Regarding the 20mm shells, German fighters had a 20mm cannon that fired through the propeller hub. These were not big bullets, but were packed with explosives [1].

The linked story seems a little bit "too good to be true". A tall tale.

pravda··on Ticketmaster changes policy, no longer offering refunds on postponed shows
That's not the same. The price to get into, for example, a Drake concert is determined not by Drake, but by how much people are willing to pay to see Drake.

If the total cost, including all fees and taxes, is more then you want to pay, then don't buy tickets.

Don't blame Ticketmaster for the high price to see Drake in concert, blame Drake fans!

But if the Drake concert is cancelled, or re-scheduled, then do a chargeback.

pravda··on Ticketmaster changes policy, no longer offering refunds on postponed shows
You could not go to concerts. That is the alternative.
pravda··on The Parents Are Not All Right
The absolute narcissism of people like this amazes me.

Other people must subside her lifestyle, because?

pravda··on Lead-Free Solder Is Better for You
> There are quite a few very good lead free alloys that are basically as good as any leaded alloy.

You know what is 100% as good as leaded solder? Actual leaded solder!

You remember that giant class-action against the Heathkit company for all the people they poisoned with leaded solder? Don't remember it? That's because it never happened!

If your soldering consists of soldering pins onto Arduino nano boards, or whipping up a prototype or two with your JLCPCB boards, you'll be fine with leaded solder.

pravda··on Lead-Free Solder Is Better for You
Whenever someone has difficulty soldering, and I find out they are using unleaded solder, I always give the same advice:

USE LEADED SOLDER

USE LEADED SOLDER

USE LEADED SOLDER

Lead-free solder is a disaster. Stay away from it.

pravda··on Coronavirus: Belgian woman infected her cat
What? How could a cat pass anything on to a rat?

You think rats go looking for cats to snuggle up with? Prey animals generally try to avoid their predictors.

pravda··on Making software engineering interviews predictive of job performance
>The accepted wisdom is that IQ tests are inherently racist and favor white evaluees over black and brown ones.

Huh? Where did you hear that?

The reality is that Asians score the highest on IQ tests, whites score somewhat below, blacks score lowest.

The accepted wisdom is that Asians have the highest IQs, followed by whites, followed by blacks.

Well, that's not entirely true. Ashkenazi Jews have the highest IQs, but their IQ-advantage is in the verbal area, which is why when you see lists of the highest-paid lawyers a disproportionate number are Tribe members.

Keep in mind that these are averages. There are plenty of dumb Asians and there are plenty of smart blacks! You can't apply group statistics to individuals.

pravda··on New York Governor announces 100% workforce reduction for non-essential services
To add some clarification here, I think he is referring to infection rates in the Hassidic community (Crown Heights has a large Hasidic population) in Brooklyn and in upstate New York Hasdic enclaves.

I find this somewhat encouraging.

If the Hasidem aren't dropping dead...well, draw your own conclusions. Yes, I am well aware that they might start dropping dead in the next few weeks.

But I might be wrong.

pravda··on A half century ago, better transistors revolutionized computer power supplies
I think in that specific case it's more due to improved battery technology.
pravda··on Casper lowers IPO price range, implying valuation of just over $500M
>There's no need for a cheap imitation, because what they sell is already the cheap option.

I just looked up their price for a queen-size foam mattress. SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS? SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS!

WTF. It's just a hunk of foam.

pravda··on Gary Starkweather died on December 26, 2019
Inkjets came after laser printers. Gary saved us from the rat-tat-tat-tat of the dot matrix printer.

pravda··on Ask HN: I've been slacking off at Google for 6 years. How can I stop this?
>she'd find at least one guy who is an exec or VC making 7 figures per year,

Does she have them audited? Because my "Tinder Salary" is an order of magnitude greater my actual salary.

pravda··on MS OS/2 SDK Document Dump
Ah OS/2! You could use the computer even while formatting a floppy.

As I recall, IBM would send you OS/2 for free, on a bunch of the new-style 3.5" floppies. I think it was about two dozen floppies.

pravda··on Chief Justice John Roberts says Americans may 'take democracy for granted'
Take democracy for granted?

The United States isn't a democracy!

pravda··on Google to end 'Double Irish, Dutch' tax scheme: filing
If a public company can increase prices to increase its profits, it means it is not setting prices correctly!

Prices should be set at the profit-maximizing price. Taxes have nothing to do with it.

Employee compensation is decided by the market.

pravda··on Google to end 'Double Irish, Dutch' tax scheme: filing
Exactly! And since the "revenue and holdings" of a corporation are owned by the shareholders, it comes from shareholders.
pravda··on Google to end 'Double Irish, Dutch' tax scheme: filing
Um...no. So much no.

When you tax a corporation it comes from shareholders.

pravda··on The FAA Proposal for Drone Remote ID

AFAIK, you don't need a license or formal training, or anything, to fly an ultralight.

Well, except for the ultralight.

pravda··on Chuck Peddle Dies at 82; His $25 Chip Helped Start the PC Age
>Virtually all of the early, successful, mass-market personal computers were built around the 6502

Except for the TRS-80! And that's a big except. :-)

Now that I think about it, the only mass-market PCs using the 6502 that I can think of were the Apple and the Commodore.

And I suspect the TRS-80 outsold both of them together.
