praneshp··on NSA collected 500M U.S. call records in 2017, a sharp rise: official report
aka Google was _not_ founded by the CIA
praneshp··on NSA collected 500M U.S. call records in 2017, a sharp rise: official report
Isn't that a bit of a jump, and specifically called out in the quartz article as not true?

"Did the CIA directly fund the work of Brin and Page, and therefore create Google? No."

praneshp··on Swedish Academy Won’t Award Nobel Prize in Literature This Year
Here's a video that talks about one of the categories (best Foreign movie). FWIW, I don't dislike the Oscars much, I sometimes even watch the whole thing if I think the host will be funny in a way that pisses off Meryl Streep.

Sorry about non-English words being sprinkled in though.

praneshp··on Swedish Academy Won’t Award Nobel Prize in Literature This Year
I'm not interested in looking it up and linking here, but there are several quora answers about how Leo wasn't really "robbed". He was unfortunate that every year he had a great movie, something was better.
praneshp··on 'My £1,000 Macbook Air was stolen at airport security and no one cares'
Same here. TSA allows it at times, but not in SFO or SJC. And asian airports, including Changi, don't allow it. I like the bag though so not too angry.
praneshp··on 'My £1,000 Macbook Air was stolen at airport security and no one cares'
SFO is weird. Last time I travelled, an older officer asked me to keep my (not smart, but metal for sure) watch on, unless I wanted to lose it. Didn't inspire a lot of confidence in the security check or the system.
praneshp··on Twitter urges users to change passwords after computer 'glitch'
Do you know of an elegant way to do this when working with protobufs? Ideally, mark a field 'password', and the generated class' __str__ equivalent returns ""
praneshp··on Tesla Plunges After a Conference Call
Whenever I see a ridiculous reaction on HN (like on the Signal/AWS article a few days ago), I just wait and watch how the same folks bend over backwards to defend Musk.

You have the right to read the linked article, why don't you exercise it?
praneshp··on A Look at MyRocks Performance
I think PeterZaitsev gets a bit of leeway in a percona post.

praneshp··on Amazon Raises Annual Prime Price 20% to $119
Ah, I took several sellers to mean target, jet, etc. My mistake.
praneshp··on Amazon Raises Annual Prime Price 20% to $119
aka several logins, several places I have to maintain credit cards for (depending on which one I get most points on), several services that can get hacked and leave my details in a public database, etc...
praneshp··on Amazon Raises Annual Prime Price 20% to $119
There are a 100m prime subscribers globally. I've found that if I were unhappy, unsubscribing will continue to leave me irrelevant, but snarky comments can enrage fans of the service/neutral observers.
praneshp··on Hollywood Is Wrong: Netflix Is the Future of Film
Sure, I come from a point of view that the inaugural seasons House of Cards and orange is the new black were terrific. If you disagree with me on that, then Netflix is an even lower bar for you.

I also think Black Mirror, while still good, dropped a notch after moving to Netflix.

praneshp··on Hollywood Is Wrong: Netflix Is the Future of Film
Heh, moviepass is not killing anyone. I'm a natural customer (1 movie a week at least), and signed up in september or so. They turned around and dropped 3 out of the 4 theaters I watch movies in (one of which was an AMC)
praneshp··on Hollywood Is Wrong: Netflix Is the Future of Film
Holds for some of the first shows too. House of cards was a disaster even before the Kevin spacey thing, Orange is the new black has been going downhill (I blame that on Jenji Kohan), etc.

They are making up in volume with new shows though.

When I'm finally able to buy a house (in the bay area or elsewhere) this is my todo number 1.
praneshp··on China, India grapple with the consequences too many men
> hence not all can afford the luxury of female child.

Heh, another fix for that is to work towards making a female child not a luxury

praneshp··on China, India grapple with the consequences too many men
(I'm not sure if I'm giving you the right context, or if you already know about it, etc etc, so blanket apology if required)

I understood and didn't take offence at the nitpick mainly due to the fact that foetus vs baby is an important argument in the pro-choice vs pro-life debate in the US; the "women should be allowed to control their bodies" side is usually presented with "should they be allowed to kill a baby to control their body", etc.

praneshp··on China, India grapple with the consequences too many men
Super-high. Pretty sure there is a handful worse than us, if it matters..
praneshp··on China, India grapple with the consequences too many men
Sorry if I wasn't clear, but I was referring to female infanticide, not foeticide.
praneshp··on China, India grapple with the consequences too many men
It's like quoting a wikipedia article, but there was an episode about this in a LastWeekTonight type show[0]. Two takeaways:

1. One of the southern states (that I'm from) ranks super-high in killing baby girls, despite what one would think intuitively.

2. Doctors offer Levi's style buy 1, get 2nd 50% off style packages for sex-determination test + abortions (both of which are banned). To ensure that parents-to-be get both, they lie that the foetus is a girl.

What toomuchtodo said. I have some awesome colleagues that joined in a less technical role, then transitioned over to dev work.

praneshp··on In India, high-pressure exams are creating a student suicide crisis
I commented up in the thread too, but talking about it to my doctor helped me. I have a recurring dream of waking up two days before chemistry exam and not having prepared anything. I don't know why it's always chemistry, I'd pick another subject that I really struggled at like physics if there was a choice.
praneshp··on In India, high-pressure exams are creating a student suicide crisis
Hahaha, 2007 here too! I also felt really uneasy in December 2006 about where I was, so I wrote entrance examinations to a bunch of third rate colleges as well (VIT, Amrita, Manipal, etc)
praneshp··on Google changes its messaging strategy again: Goodbye to Allo, double down on RCS

a. That salary is not low. If you chose to run a family of 4 on one salary of 160k, it's your choice. It's still quite good.

b. If you discount 30% of the comp because you feel like it, I wonder how many of the 20 other metro areas are going to match up.
