pramodliv1··on Ask HN: What was your favorite website from the 1990s?
FunTrivia - https://www.funtrivia.com/ I spent a lot of time on it in the 2000s and later found that it was started in 1995 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FunTrivia
pramodliv1··on Hasura raises $9.9M to simplify GraphQL
I spent 3 days setting up Hasura a few weeks ago and I wish I'd known about Nhost.

Do you know why Hasura don't provide a managed service themselves?

Also, I wonder if Hasura will eventually move to a MongoDB-like license.

pramodliv1··on Machine Learning for Systems and Systems for Machine Learning [pdf]
It was a quote in Joel Spolsky's blog.

> A very senior Microsoft developer who moved to Google told me that Google works and thinks at a higher level of abstraction than Microsoft. “Google uses Bayesian filtering the way Microsoft uses the if statement,” he said

> And I am paranoid

You should write tests when building a project in a dynamically typed language to alleviate some paranoia anyway. As long as you have decent test coverage and use a decent linter/formatter such as StandardJS[0] or prettier[1], you'll be fine.

Google Photos uses ML to tag photos and this feature released amidst much fanfare at Google I/O a couple of years ago. They don't need location data to geotag photos anymore.

If we want to store the object's URL in a relational database, should the browser send another HTTP request to our service? Wouldn't we lose the object if there's a network error during the interval between the two requests?

pramodliv1··on Medium and the Scourge of Persistent Sharing Bars
Basecamp published an article explaining their migration to Medium https://m.signalvnoise.com/medium-has-been-great-for-us-35d9...

> People often ask me why we switched to Medium. There were a variety of reasons, but one was reaching a new audience, and another was aiming for wider distribution. But maybe the top one was curiosity — let’s see if we can learn something new.

pramodliv1··on Learning Machine Learning: A beginner's journey
Sure! The course has a slow start. The first few lectures focus on the mechanics of matrix operations instead of starting with linear transformations, and compositions of linear transformation - the core ideas behind Linear Algebra. But after lecture 10, the course picks up pace.
pramodliv1··on Learning Machine Learning: A beginner's journey
> And at the start of the course, he teaches the very small subset of linear algebra required to understand his course materials.

I tried doing the ML course without any prior knowledge of Linear Algebra and dropped out after the first three weeks. In hindsight, I realized it wouldn't have been possible to appreciate how PCA works without understanding eigenvectors, how collaborative filtering is an elegant application of matrix factorization and so on.

But after I completed Strang's Linear Algebra course, the entire ML class was a breeze.

pramodliv1··on HARC
Infosys is funding the project for PR reasons. They're pretty active in the CSR space too. In early 2010, there was a show in India on CNBC TV18 that showcased CSR activities by these companies.

As a naive college student, I believed I could contribute to these causes too. After I joined TCS (since I did not study well and couldn't get other jobs), I realized that they had a built up an amazing PR team to attract employees and customers. On the other hand, I bet most Infosys programmers wouldn't have heard of Alan Kay. So Infosys needs to make up for the tech "deficit" by supporting research.

AS far as YCR are concerned, I guess they appreciate Infosys' funding and won't let Infosys' unethical policies affect their research.

pramodliv1··on Why Erlang Matters
>> I wonder if it could be possible to have an OO language with an automatic Erlang process per object, automatic immutable data (just don't let reassign values to variables, like Erlang), and a way to define supervisor trees.

Is it possible to implement it using the metaprogramming features in Elixir?

pramodliv1··on Y Combinator cofounder Jessica Livingston to take year-long sabbatical
Yes, you are absolutely right!
pramodliv1··on Y Combinator cofounder Jessica Livingston to take year-long sabbatical
I've taken 1.5 years worth of sabbaticals since I graduated 6 years ago. Can't recommend enough especially if you want to learn, build side projects and take better care of your health!
pramodliv1··on Suture – Supervisor Trees for Go
Loved the article! I'm not familiar with Erlang, but I was able to follow along and finally understood why OTP is usually distributed with Erlang.

If an Erlang process crashes when processing a message, and it is restarted, is the message replayed automatically by the runtime, or provide some kind of mechanism to recover the message as well?

pramodliv1··on How a TV Sitcom Triggered the Downfall of Western Civilization
Making the transition from pop culture to nerd culture was one of the best things that happened to me. Instead of "protect the nerds", "become a nerd" is probably better advice.

Same in India as well.

pramodliv1··on Ask HN: What's Khan Academy's next step?
Developing their own curriculum from scratch that is not tied to common-core, NCERT(India) or other government-created ones which focus mostly on memorization and getting children through the assembly line.

I'd love to see more interactive exercises focusing on problem solving, creating projects, collaborating with other students instead of answering a bunch of quizzes after listening to 30 minutes of video.
