Hi.

pragmatic··on Run a C# file directly using dotnet run app.cs
Seems like a great PowerShell replacement.

PowerShell is the ultimate Chatgpt language. For better or worse. Usually worse as most shops end up with "write only" PowerShell scripts running all the glue/infrastructure stuff.

pragmatic··on HTAP is Dead
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/relational-databases/i...

HTAP in sql server for reference.

pragmatic··on A lost decade chasing distributed architectures for data analytics?
And sql server alone is like 5 billion/yr.
pragmatic··on Clearly Incorrect
Uncle Bob Martin and Clean Code is our version of this. Absolute trash code in a book so many junior devs hold to be gospel.
pragmatic··on XAI's Grok suddenly can't stop bringing up "white genocide" in South Africa
https://www.anthropic.com/news/golden-gate-claude

Elon trying to amp white genocide.

pragmatic··on Grok answers unrelated queries with long paragraphs about "white genocide"
https://www.anthropic.com/news/golden-gate-claude

Seems someone’s been playing with the “white genocide” feature in grok.

Totally innocent I’m sure.

pragmatic··on I decided to pay off a school’s lunch debt
“ families who qualify but don’t complete the paperwork for various reasons, ranging from language barriers to pride to bureaucratic overwhelm.”

Fear of legal action against them.

Giving all kids a hot meal is a no brainer eat win for society. We gave it to them, then took it back.

pragmatic··on The End of Programming
Needs a 2023 tag in title.
pragmatic··on Ask HN: My CEO wants to go hard on AI. What do I do?
"I've seen teams go for AI, do it well, and succeed"

Can you give any hints as far as industry or product?

pragmatic··on Better Error Handling
Please, please don’t graft on error handling schemes like this.

It go, use go style, in js use try/catch/finally.

Some junior engineer is going to stumble upon this and create a mess /bad week for the next poor soul who has to work with this.

pragmatic··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
That's a distinction without a difference.

Oil price shocks in the 70s caused stagflation, a very real threat now.

The solution then was massive pain (Volker) that seemed to slay the beast.

pragmatic··on Why Go?
I think if you looked at the typescript code base you’d understand.

It’s a mess!!!

As most functional projects are. There’s just data structures and code and good luck finding anything or trying to figure out why something is where it is.

Seriously go look at the code. It’s not like c#.

pragmatic··on AI is becoming 'yes-men on servers'
The Twitter link is slow, then errors out.

Is this a one off or just how Tweeter works now?

pragmatic··on Ask HN: Are you a 40-year old software engineer without a job for > 1 year?
I feel bad for this age cohort.

Those a little bit older who started during or right after the dot bomb fiasco knew (or should have known) that software might pay well or "is fun/interesting" but have a plan to get out by 40.

I discussed this with same age or older colleagues and tried to impress upon younger colleagues the importance of saving and investing and lifestyle inflation etc.

If you started in 2005 or later you could be forgiven for think you'd found the golden ticket and 6 future salaries, bonuses and stock were never going to end just bc you could npm a bunch of js together.

pragmatic··on The A.I. Monarchy
"extension of the franchise to women"

Yeah he's been out there in plain sight for a decade plus.

pragmatic··on 400 reasons to not use Microsoft Azure
Do you think it would be any different/better if you had to migrate to GCP (for example)?

Do you think it was the migration itself or the services on Azure?

Having worked with all three, there's certainly things that suck about all of them but I've found aws "most reliable" but also seems to have a large amount of disparate services needed to do things that were simpler on Azure.

GCP was pretty meh, but depends on what services you used.

Azure is a good choice for .net and sql server (azure sql or whatever it is now) but in but sure a service built for aws is going to "just work" on Azure (or vice versa).

pragmatic··on What is vibe coding? How creators are building software with no coding knowledge
Tbf, so do most diy'ers.
pragmatic··on Treasury agrees to block DOGE's access to personal taxpayer data at IRS
Because that's what an intelligence agency from a rival nation state would do?
pragmatic··on DOGE employees don't understand the basics of SQL
"his companies have created seemingly impossible/fantastic technologies/tools that have changed the world forever."

What would those be?

pragmatic··on Sid Meier's Civilization VII
Been playing since Civ I on windows 3.1.

I've played every version but it wasn't until I set a goal of beating diety that I really started loving it. Civ 5 was the first (hated on release) then Civ 6 (hated on release).

Civ 6 on iPad is nothing short of amazing. It supports mods and retina resolution (stylus is better on high res)

Civ 7 seems to be less hated. Usually the patches and DLC seborrheic everything out. Plus the mods for UI irritations.

I think this one is very promising.

pragmatic··on What happens to SaaS in a world with computer-using agents?
Using SaaS products even with an API is fraught with peril with actual engineers and QA (sometimes) on both sides.

Who's going to bet millions of dollars these agents after going to get it right. Based on what evidence?

pragmatic··on UnitedHealth Is Sick of Everyone Complaining About Its Claim Denials
It's already required. It's a question on your tax form.
pragmatic··on Tesla Is Alienating the People It Needs Most: Study
MAGA thinks EVs after going to blows up in their garage and kill them. That's why Elon did the hail Mary. He guessed EV was going to tank, he did the public heal turn, Tesla will bomb but then he'll get some crazy govt deal for every company.

Here wants to be Boeing/Lockhead/GD, a nationally protected company with fat fat government contracts. Trump might throw him a bone. That's his reward for supporting 2025. The new deep state will happily create a new Howard Hughes.

It's a grift. The grift of the century.

pragmatic··on Tesla Is Alienating the People It Needs Most: Study
Why say Democrats? I know plenty of Republicans that feel that way.

Putting people in neat boxes is a major reason that Trump is president.

People are more alike than different. All it takes is the majority of people to wake up and say "no thanks, this is too crazy"

pragmatic··on DOGE member previously fired by cybersecurity firm for leaking company secrets
Even public trust (low level) requires som time to complete.

This person obviously was fasttracked and bypassed the most basic of background checks.

pragmatic··on Tesla sales plummet in the UK, France, and Germany
Muskrat is losing it. Full on manic persecution complex.

Again not Tony Stark but Justin Hammer.

pragmatic··on Musk aides lock government workers out of computer systems at US agency
That's not how this works. We are a country of laws.

The president is not a constitutional monarch.

pragmatic··on Mark Zuckerberg: This Man Is a Coward

pragmatic··on DOGE Takeover of USDS Allows Them to Surveil the US Government from the Inside
The VA has PHI of veterans. You need to have a clearance to work with that data.
pragmatic··on 100% Unemployment: on keeping busy when the robots take over (2013)
Bit surprised no one has mentioned human evolution/machine hybridization.

Cyberpunk style.
