ppg677··on HTTP/3 Is Fast
Great points.
ppg677··on HTTP/3 Is Fast
It is way less CPU efficient, with poor tail latency for LAN environments.
ppg677··on HTTP/3 Is Fast
QUIC needs a kernel implementation. At least in Linux, TCP/IP does a lot of its processing in soft interrupt handlers which is far cheaper and more responsive to pre-empt compared to UDP packet delivery and wakeup to an application thread.

You don't want your transport acknowledgement packets to get delayed/lost because of app thread scheduling.

ppg677··on Pixel prevented me from calling 911
I worked at Motorola's cellular division 20 years ago. I recall a "stop ship" incident when a 911 bug was discovered. That is, we halted the factory and shipments until the bug was fixed and a new software image was available.

The phone's callstack takes a lot of special actions when calling 911, including locking onto any tower even if it is not in the preferred roaming list. As with many exceptional conditions, these code paths are often not as well tested.

ppg677··on Bosch gives go-ahead for volume production of silicon carbide chips
Doesn't it get cold in Norway? I live in the Upper Midwest of the U.S. In our colder months, the range of a Tesla can drop in nearly half.
ppg677··on FAA approves hundreds more engines to use unleaded avgas
Wow, exactly my experience.
ppg677··on Did IBM Just Preview the Future of Caches?
Flexible use of L2 cache slices has been heavily explored in academia. Here is one example:

ppg677··on Abandoned Motorola Headquarters (2020)
Iridium was doomed from day 1. The system could only support a small number of subscribers. It was nearly impossible to recoup the capital expenditures given the capacity of the system.
ppg677··on Americans Are Keeping Their Cars Longer, as Vehicle Age Hits 12 Years
Cars now last longer than their useful life. Especially for those who don't drive 20k miles/year.

My 2013 car has 35,000 miles on it. Beautiful car (Hyundai Genesis sedan). 8 airbags.

But it lacks a rear-view camera and doesn't have the modern stuff like collision avoidance that pretty much comes standard nowadays.

ppg677··on Modern C++ Won't Save Us (2019)
Yet C++ is what Google, Facebook, Microsoft and others still use for their most mission critical software.
ppg677··on Latches in C++20
Apparently databases historically call shared-memory locks "latches" to distinguish them from locks used for transaction conflict detection.
ppg677··on How many registers does an x86-64 CPU have?
All that stuff is emulated in microcode.

And while counting architectural registers is something, in reality modern out-of-order processors do something called "register renaming" so that more registers can be used on-the-fly as it dynamically creates a data flow dependency graph. Yes, inside each processor.

ppg677··on Ask HN: Why are there no open source 2d printers?
I still use a 1995-manufactured HP LaserJet 5P. It rarely jams. Works great with a USB->Parallel adapter. The cartridge in there right now is probably a decade old.
ppg677··on Pathological Lying: Theoretical and Empirical Support for a Diagnostic Entity
Obvious to many:

After working for 13+ years at wildly successful silicon valley companies and seeing who climbs the latter, it is those who are good at lying. There is a spectrum ranging from blatant lying to manipulative, selective withholding of information.

ppg677··on Overriding C++ virtual functions at run time
FDO compilation will often de-virtualize and remove vtable indirection.
ppg677··on Ask HN: Recommend a maths book for a teenager?
I wish I read this before taking college-level Calculus

ppg677··on The first woman PhD in computer science was a nun (2013)
Better article explaining she is actually first PhD in the U.S. for Computer Science. Not just first woman. https://www.cs.wisc.edu/2019/03/18/2759/
ppg677··on The first woman PhD in computer science was a nun (2013)
Not just first "woman" PhD, but tied for first Computer Science PhD (in the U.S.).
ppg677··on Guitar Chord Voicings with Prolog
If you mix up your own website, you ought to consider rebranding.
ppg677··on Italy is extending its coronavirus quarantine measures to the entire country
It might not be. Lower population density and a lack of public transportation. I would worry about NYC though.
